Does Boeing paint its planes before delivery

Fri Jul 24, 2020 1:21 pm

When you see all the great photos of Boeing jets leaving Boeing field for delivery, already painted in the airline's livery, I always assumed Boeing must paint them on-site. But maybe not. Are they shipped out somewhere to be painted then returned to Seattle before the delivery flight?

Boeing frequently sends their planes elsewhere for paint when their on site paint hangars are full.

When not painted at the factory they are primarily sent to painting at PDX. A few aircraft have been painted at VCV.

But they are painted before delivery, right? No airline will accept a plane which isn't fully painted and send it to a paint shop themselves.
Many happy landings, greetings from The Netherlands!

Unless they just took the plane over from someone else of course (e.g. a ntu frame)

Even then Boeing will repaint the plane for them.

Cost of a new airplane includes livery. If your livery is especially complicated and you are a small customer you might be charged a little extra.

They are painted at more places than mentioned. KGEG, KARA so no KPDX and VCV are not the two only places.

Yes they do, here is a 747-8 heading into the paint shop:

The planes have to cross a bridge over the highway between the Everett plant and the airport/paint shops over at Payne Field:
