FAQ

SOURCE: OAG

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

NOTE:
Still looking at other sources to see if I can move it back to Sunday and also deal with cost. It remains on ~Tuesday until that is resolved.

Thanks for the update enilria.

Did BQN and PSE close down for the next few months? Looks like all the airlines are cutting flights there.

I think some of the Aug cuts are actually for Sep. At least the B6 and DL cuts.

Definitely verify that. I have had problems with PR before not showing up properly...having said that I know there was a plan to force all air service through SJU because of the pandemic.

I think for UA the ICN-SFO and PVG-SFO numbers are a miss file. UA will continue to service PVG via ICN 2x weekly, in fact just yesterday UA posted on Flying Together that demand for China flights is surprising strong and future bookings are just as strong.

Thank you for your continued hard work keeping this thread going.

Given that AA are increasing two PHX routes, while sacrificing two LAX routes, must mean PHX is getting de-hubbed. :hyper:

Last week service between SEA and nine destinations was ended and seventeen more reduced.
This week service to three more destinations is ended and to two more reduced.
At the rate flights and destinations are getting dropped it is silly to continue calling SEA and BOS hubs for DL.

These seem to be routine cuts for September. The schedule they run out of SEA and BOS right now is quite different actually. They actually brought back SEA capacity faster than other coastal hubs. If anything, their NYC cuts are a lot more severe.

Doesn't appear the filing for Cape Air (9K's) EAS routes were not reversed?

They are cutting flights/capacity that they initially had though would be restored. These are August-only changes.
If you haven't noticed, they are only pulling down the schedule 4-6 weeks in advance and making a lot of close-in changes due to the unprecedented situation we are currently in now.

CDG and OGG are influenced directly by travel restrictions and quarantine requirements.

Huge close in cuts for WN in August. So strange to see considering WN used to never make changes pre-MAX grounding.

Is anyone really surprised to see so many close-in cuts? I mean we are platueauing in the mid-20% range of last year demand, companies are extended work remotely and travel bans from what they thought would be September to at least the end of year, many are not sending their children back to school in-person this fall, and there is no real trajectory of further demand recovery in the near-term.

Close in cuts are going to be how it is for a while. Bookings are occurring much more close in than historically under normal conditions

There are issues with the months, these cuts should say September & October

DL BOS-LHR AUG 0.7>0.4[1.0]

This is wrong as there are NO DL BOS-LHR flights in August.
In September there is a 4x weekly flight starting 9/9.

(done by simple ITA check).

DL also reports China bookings are strong. So strong that they will re-start booking 100% suites in Delta One, economy will still be privy to the 60% policy, of course those fares are reaching $5k+

Feel like AA's DFW domestic schedule has got to be close to where it was pre COVID, they're adding a lot of flights there. How many flights is DFW looking at in August/September?

It looks like air travel for the rest of the year is headed off a cliff. When the CARES Act runs out, I fear the bloodletting is going to be ugly.

That is what DL has been doing ever since the crisis began. If we are to go by that, is DL planning to fly pretty much their full international schedule next summer. They closed their CVG base but are still selling all routes into the future.

There has been no insight as to what changes DL is planning to bring to their whole network at all. It is obvious that some of these routes that are being cut now are the ones that are going to be disappearing permanently - unless they still want to keep their loss-making SEA/BOS routes at the expense of dropping profitable core hub routes. A 30% smaller DL is not going to be able to fly its entire network.

There are a lot of Chinese nationals looking to visit family but haven't been able to do so. The direct capacity is really small right now, which is why these fares are a lot higher than usual. Keep in mind that people making this trip also needs to pay for their 2 week quarantine hotel stays once they get to China. So people that are going really need to go.

I don't mean to be critical, but checking the B6 and DL changes, these are mostly September figures. And AA's numbers are also somewhat out-of-whack.

For example,
AA LGA-MIA showing at 9x for August - is actually 4x.
Also, a lot of the AA LGA and JFK drops for August don't seem to be showing up; for example, this past weekend, AA dropped LGA-BNA, STL, etc.

For DL, the international numbers are September figures; BOS-LHR for example at 0.4 is actually the post-Labor day frequency (4x weekly starting Sept 9); it is actually 0 for August.

For B6, it appears that these are also September figures. For example, JFK-LAX shows 6x but it's actually 4x in August; JFK-MCO is 4x in Sept, but 2x in August.

Exactly, but I would've guessed that what was originally adjusted for August schedule in mid-June, which was well below their normal August pre-COVID schedule, was what they thought they may fly if demand continued to recover better than where we are now. That does give some insight that those may be the next-up to added back in when demand does step-up again.

I'm talking about the originally adjusted August schedule. Its logical to thing for example that DL is going to add back SEA-OGG (when Hawaii quarentine restrictions relax) and SEA-CDG (when EU travel bans subside). Both are pretty core routes in their network regardless.

I'm not sure why people are focusing on only DL with respect to BOS. The cuts in this schedule for BOS are an absolute massacre for B6 -- by my count, roughly 85 daily departures of roughly 160 planned from BOS were slashed for August. Now, it's a good business decision with Massachusetts instituting a mandatory 14-day quarantine for travelers from most states effective 1 August but it's still a massive cut.

The Tecnam equipment type is probably not recognized as valid by OAG. Eventually they will fix it.

I have a theory that DL's original sep cuts for NYC/BOS was less than what they intended in order to send a message to AA/B6 for their newly formed partnership. It only took another week for them to make these additional NYC/BOS cuts.

On a date last summer FSDan showed AA with 915 AA departures (dom + intl) at DFW. I'll let somebody with a data subscription do a count for Aug20.

Well, I'd put more as DL is not going to fly into HDN for the upcoming 2020-2021 ski season. I would imagine they will be back when mass-tourism resumes. Destination ski market traffic tends to provide a nice revenue premium.

Not surprised, I suspect a lot of the seasonal ski markets will have reductions as demand will be way down in the current environment.

At least with respect to BOS, the mandatory quarantine for states outside of ME/NH/VT/MA/RI/CT/NY/NJ/HI was only announced at the end of last week. And the timing of the DL cuts is basically identical to B6's cuts at BOS and NYC. I'm more inclined to think that the Covid war room at both carriers saw that relatively new quarantines in NY/NJ/CT/MA (ten states were added for NY a week ago, for example) would impact travel. Moreover, key testing metrics for states with large air travel demand to NYC/BOS (like FL, CA, TX) are not trending toward near-term relaxation of quarantine measures. Based on the most recent data, Illinois will be added to the quarantine list for NY (over 10 positive tests per 100,000 population) this week and NYC-CHI is another key market.

I think it's much more logical to view these reductions as reactions to changes in government policy than delaying to "send a message."

Cerabellar ataxia

Before people postulate DL is doing a:

UA in CLE, US in PIT, or AA in BNA

one has to remember NW always had an international presence in SEA prior to the DL merger.

http://www.departedflights.com/NW042885.html

DL will most likely leverage that presence with direct flights to its hubs until the international TransPac destinations start to reopen with the US re-election in November and a sense of rationality returns.

Economic calamities, international events, business recoveries, and mergers tend to reshape air travel hubs and focus cities.

I think historically one should examine the Northwest Airlines historical route maps.
Aesthetically the A 340 got it right!

It's because during the Max grounding WN was Still making hand over fist record profits regardless of the max problem.

Great way to say that DL will go back to flying to its hubs from SEA, which is not a strategic move but rather a retrenchment from its historically extensive network from SEA. It remains to be seen if, after COVID, the SEA hub will remain viable or if it becomes just another spoke. My guess is that it will be somewhere in between, with a few flights to international destinations and then feed from key cities like SJC/LAX/SFO/PDX plus the hubs. Transcons from SEA may also remain. Otherwise, with AS building a strong relationship with AA, my guess is that a few destinations will get the axe permanently unless the economy roars back to its previous strength.

Last week service between SEA and nine destinations was ended and seventeen more reduced.
This week service to three more destinations is ended and to two more reduced.
At the rate flights and destinations are getting dropped it is silly to continue calling SEA and BOS hubs for DL.

It looks like DL's Bos flying is getting butchered. The outlook on loads must really be horrible.
I am not a contract expert, but doesn't DL (or AA/UA) still have to pay the regionals for cuts this close in, that have already been bid??

Incorrect. SEA-PVR, SEA-CDG, SEA-HND, SEA-PVG (via ICN) returned, SEA-LHR is still planned.

Again a lot of this stuff like all the BOS and SEA flying that everyone is going crazy about being "cut" "butchered" "slashed" isn't operating in July.
Remember when everyone got way overzealous about the grand reopening and we'd be jet-setting everywhere the fall, borders would open, children would be back in school, road warriors would get back out there, people would be in offices, lollipops would grow on trees, and the sun would shine....etc. Well yeah here we are.

DL added 1000 more daily flights in July over June. They had planned a month ago to add back another 1000 flight/day in August over July. Then recently scaled that back to only 500 flight/day in August over July. And, no surprised much of that capacity roll-back is coming from the coastal hub/gateway/focus cities that disproportionately rely upon a combination of corporate business travel and/or international feed.

They are just rolling back the resumption of a lot of the non-core hub flying until an undefined point in time, at least until there are demand signals that should stuff picking up further.

Here is the breakdown of WN nonstop service out of DAL starting on August 11th:
5x ABQ, 4x AMA, 6x ATL, 7x AUS, 2x BHM, 5x BNA, 5x BWI, 1x CHS, 1x CLT, 1x CMH, 3x DCA, 7x DEN, 3x ECP, 4x ELP, 2x FLL, 13x HOU, 2x IND, 6x LAS, 5x LAX, 3x LBB, 2x LGA, 2x LIT, 3x MAF, 5x MCI, 4x MCO, 7x MDW, 2x MEM, 1x MKE, 1x MSP, 4x MSY, 2x OAK, 1x OMA, 6x PHX, 1x PIT, 3x PNS, 4x SAN, 7x SAT, 3x SJC, 1x SLC, 1x SMF, 5x STL, 3x TPA, 4x TUL

157 daily departures out of DAL on 8/11/2020
DAL-BUR/DTW/ONT/PHL/RDU/SDF nonstop service still suspended until at least 10/8/2020

There are also some more nonstop routes that could be added by both WN and DL out of DAL once demand for domestic air travel returns with there being more room at DAL with the cuts that WN has made at DAL as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, including (a) DAL-BUF/CVG/BDL/ORF on WN, (b) the return of DAL-BOS/CLE/HRL/JAX/PDX/RNO/SEA nonstop service on WN, and (c) DAL-DTW/MSP/LGA/SLC on DL.

A majority of those WN cuts are actually for August so it appears that some of the months are correct. There are still some month issues with WN as PHX-LGB doesn't start till Sept 13th (at 3x daily) though.

Also, a lot of the AA LGA and JFK drops for August don't seem to be showing up; for example, this past weekend, AA dropped LGA-BNA, STL, etc.

AA didn't load until Sunday @ midnight so if OAG still pulls on Saturdays but doesn't update the database until Mon now it would always show up a week delayed.

A little birdie tells me LHR won’t be long for this earth, with the arrival of another OneWorld nonstop.

CDG can be looked after by fellow SkyTeamers, unless aircraft routing and fleet backup necessitates an extra. I see PDX gaining some international routes for some reason to capitalize upon the Asian presence in the Northwest US and make the former NWA business flyers still choose Skyteam.

Nope Cranklyflier wrote about it, as you can see September & October were adjusted, not August:

This situation is so fluid that what an airlines schedules today and what it eventually flys a month from now may not be anything close.

As someone who flew a lot for business on DL out of BOS I'm sad to see the cuts but I'm not surprised. I had to fly down to Florida last month due to a death in the family (non-Covid related) and BOS terminal A was a ghost town. Maybe 10-15 people for about 3 flights that morning. I had the SkyClub all to myself for about an hour and I think there were maybe 8 flights total on the departure board for the day, mostly just NYC, ATL, and DTW. On a side not though while not near scientific I do seem to notice a constant stream of AA and B6 flights throughout the day from the back yard. Have they not made the same deep BOS cuts as DL?

It ain't just DL. B6 is cutting BOS by over half versus what they had for sale last week, too. And BOS is getting cut because Massachusetts will enforce a mandatory 14-day quarantine for all travelers from outside a small number of states (ME/NH/VT/MA/RI/CT/NY/NJ/HI) in four days. There will be some limited back-to-school demand for the colleges and universities which aren't going entirely remote, but tourism and business travel (outside a bit from states in the bubble) are basically going to be zero. Pretty much all fall events are cancelled.

Last Thursday, I got the following flight count out of BOS
B6 - 77, DL - 28, AA - 41

So yes, DL has cut far more than the other 2. JetBlue really talked about combined B6/AA network today when it comes to their new partnership. That combined network has a pretty dominant market share right now.

B6 cut half of its September schedule from pre-COVID schdule. DL cut half of its September schedule from already cutting more than half of its September schedule a week ago. Pretty big difference between scheduling in 80 to 90 flights vs 35. Even AA is larger than DL at this point.
