I don't think anyone cares about being the "biggest", "largest" whatever currently.

Keep in mind BOS is a core hub of the B6 network. BOS is not a core hub for DL.

Right now the more flights you have, the more opportunity to lose money.

Again a lot of this stuff like all the BOS and SEA flying that everyone is going crazy about being "cut" "butchered" "slashed" isn't operating in July.
Remember when everyone got way overzealous about the grand reopening and we'd be jet-setting everywhere the fall, borders would open, children would be back in school, road warriors would get back out there, people would be in offices, lollipops would grow on trees, and the sun would shine....etc. Well yeah here we are.

DL added 1000 more daily flights in July over June. They had planned a month ago to add back another 1000 flight/day in August over July. Then recently scaled that back to only 500 flight/day in August over July. And, no surprised much of that capacity roll-back is coming from the coastal hub/gateway/focus cities that disproportionately rely upon a combination of corporate business travel and/or international feed.

They are just rolling back the resumption of a lot of the non-core hub flying until an undefined point in time, at least until there are demand signals that should stuff picking up further.

I think it's just further indication about how over saturated those markets were to begin with and how bad the return on investment was. Delta can no longer afford flying routes that were under performing for the sake of gain future market share. It has to now operate in the market that made lots of money for them in good time which are probably now turning an acceptable profit. I don't have proof but I would say a lot of the Boston routes were dogs because they were in their infancy. Also Logan Airport was pretty proactive in attracting new service into the market.
the truth does matter, guys. too bad it's often quite subjective. the truth is beyond the mere facts and figures. it's beyond good and bad, right and wrong...

Huge close in cuts for WN in August. So strange to see considering WN used to never make changes pre-MAX grounding.

There are issues with the months, these cuts should say September & October

A majority of those WN cuts are actually for August so it appears that some of the months are correct. There are still some month issues with WN as PHX-LGB doesn't start till Sept 13th (at 3x daily) though.

I don't mean to be critical, but checking the B6 and DL changes, these are mostly September figures. And AA's numbers are also somewhat out-of-whack.

For example,
AA LGA-MIA showing at 9x for August - is actually 4x.
Also, a lot of the AA LGA and JFK drops for August don't seem to be showing up; for example, this past weekend, AA dropped LGA-BNA, STL, etc.

AA didn't load until Sunday @ midnight so if OAG still pulls on Saturdays but doesn't update the database until Mon now it would always show up a week delayed.

Thanks to the people who pointed out the issues with this week. There was a format change in the file that I didn't notice. It caused the months to be off. Here is another attempt. Tell me if this one seems off vs airline websites.

I've been lurking on this site since the paywall days, and look forward to this post every week. Thanks for putting it together, enilria. Must be a ton of work to keep up with nowadays.
Interesting times in the industry.

Yep, Delta puts out a press release each month what they are reinstating. August isn't out yet, and twice they have changed what was put in OAG.

Did BQN and PSE close down for the next few months? Looks like all the airlines are cutting flights there.

I think some of the Aug cuts are actually for Sep. At least the B6 and DL cuts.

BQN and others are closed until January

By Notice of Action Taken dated April 25, 2020, the Department granted United’s request, noting that it would not
be reasonable or practicable for the carrier to serve Aguadilla considering that the Governor of Puerto Rico requested
that the FAA permit flight restrictions to divert all scheduled and unscheduled commercial carrier passenger flights
to Puerto Rico to San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) for screening, and the FAA did not object.

B6 cut half of its September schedule from pre-COVID schdule. DL cut half of its September schedule from already cutting more than half of its September schedule a week ago. Pretty big difference between scheduling in 80 to 90 flights vs 35. Even AA is larger than DL at this point.

It's no surprise AA is bigger than DL at BOS now -- it is known that AA has chosen to swing for the fences with respect to its Covid recovery strategy. They were running a larger operation at CLT in April than DL was at ATL -- does that mean ATL is relatively less important to DL than CLT is to AA? No, it just means that DL is approaching rebuilding the airline far more conservatively.

We also know that (1) B6 is pursuing a more aggressive recovery strategy than DL and (2) BOS is one of their two largest hubs. IINM it's their largest domestic hub. They probably need to retain some of their flying from BOS to remain compliant with CARES Act requirements. Even so, cutting roughly half their schedule from BOS maybe a week out is a massacre no matter how you slice it.

AA's cut is much larger now that we can see what was really August.

They didn't cut schedule that much a week out. Most of the cuts are for September. Check the updated list.

Last week service between SEA and nine destinations was ended and seventeen more reduced.
This week service to three more destinations is ended and to two more reduced.
At the rate flights and destinations are getting dropped it is silly to continue calling SEA and BOS hubs for DL.

This is what you wrote LAST week on the OAG thread

I don't have a horse in the race with the whole Delta/Seattle thing, but you seem to be jumping to WILD conclusions based on very close-in cuts for a SINGLE MONTH. Do you have a grudge against Seattle or Delta? This just seems such an odd interpretation you're making.

Sure seems like it, especially with the BOS changes too. Like I said last week those changes are for September not August, and some of those weren't even flying in August anyway. It is still an increase over August.

AA's cut is much larger now that we can see what was really August.

The MIA cuts are eye popping, though understandable.

TSA lines at MIA this morning for AA were not existence. I guess the TSA Pre Check lane will soon be gone again.

I can't help but notice that a lot of AA LAX cuts coincide with AS LAX adds. I know AS is joining oneworld, but I this looks like coordination of schedules - which I thought was illegal without anti-trust immunity?

Delta was building up BOS not that long before the pandemic, natural the project is going to be shelved until they get to revenue neutral. Last Fall, they finally got Terminal A to themselves for the first time since it was built, and made a big press splash about it.

SEA has been around for a long time, that's not going anywhere.

Has AA announced permanent withdrawal from those LAX-West Coast markets? The cuts above go only as far as February for some, March for others and then May. The May ones I could see potentially being permanent, but are the others likely to come back with the Spring? Or when they find the lift to replace Compass?

I can't argue with the logic of shifting the LAX markets to AS, if they are codeshares and with the oneworld benefits, while AA shifts that flying to PHX. I know, for example, that AA was filling the MFR-PHX flight while the LAX flight didn't fill. So double dailies EUG/MFR/RDM-PHX should do well. AS used to fly MFR-LAX once a day, and it was generally full on the Q400. It was timed better for connections over LAX than the AA schedule IMO (AM south, late PM north); it was dropped back when QX was slashing flying.
Worked for WestAir, Apollo Airways, Desert Pacific, Western, AirCal and American Airlines (Retired). Flight Memory: 181 airports, 92 airlines, 78 a/c types, 403 routes, 58 countries (by air), 6 continents. 1,119,414 passenger miles.

By my count it looks like ~89 daily departures cut from a plan of ~170. That's pretty Mass-ive. (Apologies for the pun.)

It was no secret that AA was going to refocus operations at LAX. The markets AA was likely to drop are the regional cities which it added recently at LAX (markets where it had marginal presence) solely for connections (which are not crucial now with lesser focus on Asia). These are all coincidentally markets where AS is historically strong, and AS was quick to capitalize on that - and their guesswork seems to have been spot on.

There is also a couple of routes they didn't cut and didn't show up on the list. I'm not disputing it's a large cut. They are running about half of their pre-COVID planning capacity. But you are equating a carrier cutting 75% of their pre-COVID schedule vs two that's running about half of their pre-COVID schedule. It's not exactly a secret that DL has been bringing back capacity at BOS slower than it's other coastal hubs.

It was apparent when the AA/AS thing was announced there would be a paradigm shift in operations @ LAX. AS: Traditionally strong N/S on the West Coast, AA the opposite.

It is also not a secret the JetBlue is losing an outsize amount of money - month after month - during this crisis. Keeping a larger capacity than your competitors may have seemed like a smart gamble to someone in March; by now, you would think they would have learned better.

I don't now what your point is, since every airline is losing a lot of money. Especially in northeast, where the demand has been harder hit than elsewhere.

B6 operated 15% of their planned Q2 capacity.
http://otp.investis.com/clients/us/jetb ... wsid=69823

DL operated 15% of their Q2 capacity.
https://s2.q4cdn.com/181345880/files/do ... esults.pdf

So they operated same amount of capacity system wide in Q2. They are both at around 40 to 50% in August. B6 simply values Boston more than its other focus cities. It's bringing back capacity at BOS faster than any focus city outside of NYC. DL simply is bringing back capacity at BOS slower than all the other hubs.

This appears to mark the end of DL at HDN.

Well, I'd put more as DL is not going to fly into HDN for the upcoming 2020-2021 ski season. I would imagine they will be back when mass-tourism resumes. Destination ski market traffic tends to provide a nice revenue premium.

Not surprised, I suspect a lot of the seasonal ski markets will have reductions as demand will be way down in the current environment.

Perhaps I’m reading too much into it, but it is interesting that they have yet to cut EGE or MTJ, but HDN has already been axed. I fully expect both of the others to be cut too, but there may be something there... though I do expect to see all resume by winter 21-22

The seasonal ski destinations are likely to be a function of what revenue guarantees the resort communities are able to underwrite for the upcoming season. Destination ski traffic is what pays the bills in these communities. I suspect there will still be flights into EGE, ASE, JAC this winter as they also have a sizable wealthy faction of secondary residence. Not going to be anywhere near the amount of flights as winters past.

Coordination requires discussing beforehand. You are allowed to respond to public information. But I think AA/AS is likely to be scrutinized by DOT on all of this

No surprise here. American Eagle flights at LAX all operated from the "Eagle's Nest" - a truly awful experience. LAX O&D travelers faced a confusing check-in process (which terminal to use?) and then a convoluted bus gate boarding process to the remote terminal facility with spartan amenities. I never remember being warned that dining and shopping opportunities would be extremely limited after the long bus ride; only that I was extremely disappointed by the lack of food and seating once at the nest. Certainly no peace and quiet over there either - especially with the frequently long lines of passengers waiting to board buses back to the main terminals. I shudder to think about how nerve-wracking it must have been to connect between mainline flights (spread across the massive Tom Bradley International Terminal, as well as Terminal 4, Terminal 5, and I believe at one point even Terminal 6) and Eagle flights, or if the airline even made an attempt to offer longer connection opportunities given the lengthy bus rides necessary.

To be sure, I would *much* rather connect via PHX than LAX. PHX has excellent food options and never seems to have any congestion issues. Surely other passengers in the know feel the same way as I do? Hopefully if enough American Eagle flights are cut then the Eagle's Nest can be closed for good. AA would be much better off running all of its flights from TBIT, Terminal 4 and Terminal 5. Of course, connections to AS in Terminal 6 would be easier to complete than the long bus rides to/from the nest.

Feeder services such as these have been vanishing all across the country. IIRC, AA dropped quite a few of its shortest haul services at PHL recently. Just as folks on the East Coast would much rather connect via CLT than PHL, those out West would much rather use DFW or PHX (both readily available from FAT on AA) than LAX. AA certainly hasn't been shy about stating the fact that its hubs in LA and NYC are its weakest. I suspect a number of short haul feeder routes in these markets catering to minimal O&D are on the chopping block along with the obvious longer haul stuff that may be struggling.

None of these cuts are surprising. I was honestly shocked to see AA add LAX-SDF in the first place, and am surprised it lasted this long. DFW and ORD should be able to offer AA's SDF travelers access to LAX easily enough - as well as almost all of the connecting opportunities LAX did. I suppose AA could always try a nonstop PHX-SDF service too. I can't help but wonder if MFR and RDM could be served nonstop from DFW in the future as well (once the economy rebounds, of course). I have to think the improved access to PHX is much appreciated in those markets though. I may sound like a broken record here, but connecting through LAX sucks. The airport just isn't designed with connections in mind.

Like LAX, NYC seems to be a pretty problematic hub market for AA. I wouldn't be surprised if a number of smaller spokes are at risk - the likes of CAE, CAK, CHO, GSO, ROA and perhaps even places like CVG and DTW could very well be in trouble given the lack of business travel and increasing restrictions on interstate leisure travel. Perhaps B6 could make better use of AA's surplus LGA slots?

It looks like AA added this route on April 2nd, 2019 - the same day LAX-SDF started. I wonder if other routes added then, like ORD-ABE and PHL-CHA (started May 3rd, 2019 but added in the same batch) could also be cut.

As an LA-based snowboarder, this is very exciting. Quite a bit of new service to popular ski markets lately - B6 shifting LGB-BZN/RNO/SLC to LAX, AS adding its own LAX-BZN nonstop service, WN seemingly pushing ahead with service to HDN, etc. I can't help but wonder if those AS E-Jets could make their way to EGE someday soon!

If Steamboat Springs is anything like Vail, there are *tons* of skiers, snowboarders and other visitors (not even there for the slopes - just enjoying drinks, food, hanging out with family and friends, and of course shopping) from Europe and Latin America. I suspect some of the longer haul routes into EGE (IAH and MIA spring to mind) could be suspended this year simply because international leisure travel in and out of the U.S. is now so heavily restricted. Perhaps DL's ATL-EGE and maybe even ATL-HDN could be cut for similar reasons?

Has AA announced permanent withdrawal from those LAX-West Coast markets? The cuts above go only as far as February for some, March for others and then May.

I think the decision just isn't made yet. I would expect there is a 50%+ significant possibility they don't come back in 2021 with the virus being the main factor. It is also becoming industry dogma that AA is retreating on LAX in favor of SEA FWIW.

My guess is that this is largely driven by DL's decision to retire their small 737-700 fleet. That aircraft was the right capacity/performance mix for ATL-TGU. I'm not sure if the 319 could take off from TGU and make it to ATL with a full payload. The 752 could, but that's too much capacity for the market.

I'd assume UA is keeping them around, as it's a much larger fleet for them, and they were even planning on taking more secondhand frames from WN recently (not sure if they still plan to take all of them). They fly more routes that require the capacity/performance mix the 73G offers: IAH-TGU, IAH-UIO, EWR-SNA, EWR-EGE, EWR-BOG, etc. come to mind.

A new world...the whole industry is collapsing. Lots of slots gates and routes for anyone that has the stomach to try.

The DOT isnt going after any airline losing billions of dollars in a quarter for trying to partner with an airline losing hundreds of millions in a quarter.

AS is starting those LAX-FAT and OR flights...but is AA codesharing those flights? Doesn't codesharing make it illegal under the agreement of the VX purchase. I think the motivation is about OneWorld...not necessarily AA...but some could read between the lines.

We'll see what happens.

I completely disagree. The DOT and DOJ were involved in vetting these deals or will be. Just because this is a time of crazy change doesn't mean laws stop being enforced.

AS is starting those LAX-FAT and OR flights...but is AA codesharing those flights? Doesn't codesharing make it illegal under the agreement of the VX purchase. I think the motivation is about OneWorld...not necessarily AA...but some could read between the lines.

The AS-VX merger specifically restricted AA and AS code sharing in LAX. I don't think those small markets were included, BUT AFAIK the issue was related to technically satisfying the terms of the DOJ/DOT ruling. For example, they definitely can't code share on LAX-JFK, but what happens with FAT-LAX-JFK? If the AA code is on AS FAT-LAX they probably can't technically stop that from being created and I think their agreement with DOJ/DOT precludes that. I think it is close enough to the line that they haven't wanted to broach it. Could that change? Maybe, but it hasn't yet as I understand it.

The GDP numbers didn't tell us anything we didn't already know did it? 1/3rd of people lost their jobs, 1/3rd of GDP went away. I don't think those numbers do anything other than put a another number to what we already knew. Air travel is presently down about 65%. The airlines would love if it were only down 33%.

United seems to be waiting even later than prior months to publish the ‘real’ September schedule.

-Oxygen Mask rule over 240 gone
-Landing expiration over 90 days gone
-Headset usage during training gone
-Havent seen an FAA examiner on a JS in months

Lots of rules and laws in avaition have gone by the wayside since this started

Heck, you can go to your local restaurant and get a cocktail to go and walk down the street with it in many states.

Whole new world with lots of flexibility.

The regulators will see three airlines losing a combined number in the billions, employing well over 100000 people trying to reshuffle the deck to stay afloat.

When other options include bailouts, bankruptcy and/or liquidation, a codeshare approval doesnt seem so bad

Well noted. The industry and entire economy are in peril. There will be every effort made to accommodate and make compromises to ensure all the players have a chance at survival. The only thing I disagree with is the 100K number. It’s MUCH larger when you include the ancillary businesses. The totality of it all is a gigantic piece of the economy.

And the regulators might allow certain anti-competitive actions to help carriers stay afloat -- if the carriers ask for relief and if those measures are only for a limited time to address a period of crisis. A long-term arrangement at LAX which divides up routes between AA and AS (or in NYC between AA and B6) is obviously anti-competitive and unlikely to withstand scrutiny.

Here is the breakdown of WN nonstop service out of DAL starting on August 11th:
5x ABQ, 4x AMA, 6x ATL, 7x AUS, 2x BHM, 5x BNA, 5x BWI, 1x CHS, 1x CLT, 1x CMH, 3x DCA, 7x DEN, 3x ECP, 4x ELP, 2x FLL, 13x HOU, 2x IND, 6x LAS, 5x LAX, 3x LBB, 2x LGA, 2x LIT, 3x MAF, 5x MCI, 4x MCO, 7x MDW, 2x MEM, 1x MKE, 1x MSP, 4x MSY, 2x OAK, 1x OMA, 6x PHX, 1x PIT, 3x PNS, 4x SAN, 7x SAT, 3x SJC, 1x SLC, 1x SMF, 5x STL, 3x TPA, 4x TUL

157 daily departures out of DAL on 8/11/2020
DAL-BUR/DTW/ONT/PHL/RDU/SDF nonstop service still suspended until at least 10/8/2020

There are also some more nonstop routes that could be added by both WN and DL out of DAL once demand for domestic air travel returns with there being more room at DAL with the cuts that WN has made at DAL as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, including (a) DAL-BUF/CVG/BDL/ORF on WN, (b) the return of DAL-BOS/CLE/HRL/JAX/PDX/RNO/SEA nonstop service on WN, and (c) DAL-DTW/MSP/LGA/SLC on DL.

DAL to CLT is cutting from 1x a day to only .5 a week

The reason why CLT-DAL is only showing .5 a week is that WN had suspended CLT-DAL nonstop service until August 11th, but WN's flight schedules currently show daily nonstop service between DAL and CLT between 8/11/2020 and 9/26/2020.
