FAQ

SOURCE: OAG

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Many thanks, Enilria, for doing this once again. Being in AUS, I share your intrigue with AM's MEX-AUS cuts...pretty telling.

This is really good. Thank you. I’ve been looking forward to this. Would recommend double checking and looking for August too. AA made tons of changes (several of my flights were chopped in august over the weekend) as did UA. Good work!

AA AMS-DFW OCT 0.2>0.7[0]

One of the very few AA increases listed for this autumn.

Interesting how this relatively new (2018) seasonal AA route has performed in COVID times:

- 1. Operated as a B77W freight-only service in spring,
- 2. One of first AA TATL routes to turn to daily B788 pax in summer.
- 3. Now extended with an increased frequency into the autumn.

Could we be seeing early signs that AA may go year-round DFW-AMS.

AA launched DFW-AMS in May 2017 on the 763. In 2018/19, the route was on the 772. 2020 was the first season it was on the 788 and it’s now scheduled on the 789 for 2021.

I’m guessing they’re temporarily shifting the PHL-AMS flight to DFW just for October as noted in the OAG changes since PHL still isn’t a designated gateway for European arrivals.

The second time in a couple months this has shown up. Obviously a misfile? Thanks enilria for putting this together. It's getting uglier by the week.

Those are some pretty good whacks to LAX by AA. Does anybody think the Sept schedule updates are now 'complete' by AA/DL/UA/WN/AS at LAX? It would be interesting to see daily departure counts. Seats and/or ASMs would be even better - if somebody wants to be an over-achiever. :P

I was at DCA/AA yesterday, a Monday. The place was so empty it was eerie. My flight from MIA was about 25% full. I was at the AC for about 2 hours on a connection. Other than a little bird flying around I was the only one other than a couple that came in a few minutes before I left.

Really, it was something out of the Twilight Zone.

As with DL at LGA, AA is going to have to take some losses here when slot waiver goes away. I don't see why slot waiver will stay in place until when business demand comes back to like 70% of pre-COVID.

I think we will see more cuts up until end of this month. They even cut August this past weekend. I think LAX will be a lot smaller next year compared to 2019 for AA.

This feels somewhat bullish given DL's trends..? Am I missing something? I don't see anything that AM filed this week that would point to those locations shifting traffic to DL's metal.

This flight has an interesting history to it.

Aeromexico first attempted this flight in January 2007 using a 737 4x/week, marking Austin's first international service. Then in May 2007, they announced that the flight was increasing from 4x/week to daily, but would be downgauging to an E145 operated by Aeromexico Connect. However, that same month, they threatened to pull out of Austin by July 1 entirely because the federal government blocked Aeromexico moving the flight to the evening because they didn't want to add customs agents to Austin to cover an evening shift [At the time they only had customs agents for daytime flights---Austin was a significantly smaller back then]. The dispute wasn't resolved and Aeromexico pulled out.

[In the meantime, VivaAerobus tried Austin-Mexico again flying to Cancun and Puerto Vallarta using the South Terminal [they were the ones that opened that building] from Austin in May 2008, but by May 2009 had pulled out citing Swine Flu [????] of all things.]

Then, in November 2016, Aeromexico [Aeromexico Connect] re-started the service using an E170 4x/week. This was quickly expanded to a daily flight in March 2017 and by September 2017 upgauged to an E190 with first class introduced to the route.

Since then, they kept capacity and frequency flat on the route, which I guess meant that they thought the Austin-Mexico City market was either tapped out or not worth chasing after remaining customers who may have been lower-yielding or they didn't get enough feed from Delta's focus city to expand [because why would Delta route connecting passengers through here when it's O&D focused]. They tried re-starting the flight last month 3x/week, but I guess they didn't think the flight was worth keeping around long-term because of COVID and so for the second time Aeromexico has pulled out of Austin.

This time, it's not the complete death of Austin-Mexico service [albeit it's to Cancun and Cabo and I'm not sure if these have resumed operating] but unfortunate nonetheless.

EDIT: Also forgot to mention the current Aeromexico bankruptcy---that probably has something to do with this if Austin was loss-making to save cash.

Interesting to see AA out of LAX-YVR.

IIRC, they originally launched the route as Eagle (CR7s?), and then eventually upgraded it to all E75s and threw in an A319 on the evening run. I can't remember specifically but I feel that AA was 3-5 times daily at one point on the route.

That said, the route is notoriously low-yielding. AS, who ran the route for years (and at one point I think flew the route a whopping 6 times daily) threw in the towel a couple of years back. DL also did the route at some point with E75s IIRC.

I think this leaves AC/UA/WS on the market. I wonder if AS would be willing to give it another go.

AA seems to have pulled a complete 180 from just a month or two ago when they were flying far more capacity than DL or UA. LAX has been absolutely gutted for American.
It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems with just potatoes.

Capital Vacation month, on top of everything else. DC is usually a ghost town, but for tourists in August. Not much business getting done, but lots of corporate yacht parties on the Chesapeake.

Truly not unexpected. Money losing hubs cannot be sustained during economic downturns. Although not yet announced, I would fully expect the likes of ATL, CMH, IND, RDU, MSY to not come back either. Outer stations with strong AA loyalty such as OKC/TUL/BNA have a much better chance to remain. The big question mark in my mind is SLC, DEN, IAH. DEN is highly competitive and low fares so I could see this going away. SLC and IAH being competitor hubs means DL/UA have better scale to make those routes work.

Average airfares out of LAX dropped 11% from 2012 to 2019 (17th largest decline over this time period). So fares in general out of LAX were under pressure over the past several years due to all the competition thereby making it even more difficult for AA to compete.

AA chose to swing with the fences because they're playing with the house's money. If the recovery in travel were to be faster than DL and UA were anticipating, AA stood to gain significant market share while avoiding Chapter 11. In the event of an L-shaped recovery, AA is probably going into bankruptcy whether they chose to be aggressive or conservative.

There's been a fair amount of discussion - here and in the 'press' - about AA how zigged while DL/UA zagged. I think we need to see AA flight counts vs. 2019 for Aug and Sept before we have confidence they've actually changed strategy. (Whether AA announces something of the form 'We'll be at xx% of 2019 capacity,' or it comes from a 3rd party is yet to be seen.) Enilria's ongoing work gives us an overview each week (Thanks! It's always good to have data.) but we don't get the aggregate of a carrier that was operating ~6,000 flights a day in peak 2019.

No increase in frequency (both markets are currently at 3x daily between DL and AM in August with DL doing one and AM operating two). DL is apparently taking over the AM flights in both those markets starting Sept based on the current published schedules. The AM flights have been zeroed out in the various GDS but not cut yet so that’s probably why you don’t see the cuts show up here.

DFW & CLT are going to be pretty busy for AA in September, probably 75% what it usually is

Looks like AA took a machete to the schedule at GRR.

I share your intrigue at the LAX-YVR flight, too. Given how much content Hollywood films in Vancouver it's probably a pretty profitable destination under normal circumstances...but these are not normal circumstances.

We have a Thanksgiving trip booked on DL to MEX...n/s on AM code-share SEA-MEX which I'm starting to doubt will return by mid-November. I'm dreading the email from DL with a horrible routing via ATL or JFK! ;) Connecting in LAX wouldn't be as bad but we were hoping for the n/s redeye out of SEA as it saves us a day.

Considering BDL is losing both DFW and MIA after labor day, I wouldn't hold your breath for LAX for October, however, it wasnt on the permanently canceled list from last week like SDF was so there is promise for the future. If I was a betting person thought I don't think it will be back before next April.

Correct, DFW-AMS/DUB extended only until PHL starts service hopefully Oct 24.

AA's cuts extend far beyond just LAX/WAS/NYC. Did you not look at the list? With flying stuck at 25-30% of 2019 levels, AA's looking to lose a lot of money if it doesn't pare back its strategy of flying a lot of capacity. They originally intended for flying to start picking up, that hasn't happened.

Remember the cuts are year to year not month to month. The September 2020 schedule is not all that significantly different from the August 2020 schedule.

Didn’t AC first serve AUS briefly at the end of the tech boom in 2000? Also, didn’t AUS have seasonal weekend CUN long before 2007?

I doubt they’ll look very hard until our mandatory 14 day quarantine ends with you guys, which won’t be anytime soon.

AA are really gutting YVR at least until the end of the year and appear to have no service until October.

I wouldn’t be surprised if AS jumps back in on LAX-YVR once the OW integration is complete and the pandemic is under control (meaning everyday citizens can cross the border).

Aside from the mandatory, enforced-by-random-police-checks 14-day quarantine, that is. Loads of fun for folks who live in tiny YYZ/YVR apartments without so much as a balcony.

A good portion of AA's cuts also have to do with Labor Day weekend and the fact that their schedule transition for September is the 9th so some of the cuts are really just cuts for Labor Day weekend and bringing the August schedule forward to the 8th. That is most of the MIA and PHX cuts - I didn't check the ORD cuts.

Like others, I'm thinking this is another route that will move from column "AA" to column "AS".

Yes AS did try it on at least one occasion, and dropped it, but now with AA gone, they may see a few $$ on the route to help with their LAX expansion. Unless I'm missing someone, I don't think OW will be represented on the route once AA leaves, right?.

Needless to say, I'm very happy to see AS adding SAN-SBA as the carrier also builds its operation in their SoCal focus city!

This is going back a number of years in my memory now but I seem to recall when AS cut LAX-YVR that there was some discussion about how it was very much a loss leader at LAX for them. I can't imagine that is going to change much, even with AA out of the market. While I would love to see AS in the market because I think they are the best carrier to service the market, I think there needs to be some well demonstrated recovery and improvement in fare levels before they will jump in.

I have always had the impression that YVR-US traffic, even during good times, has never had great yields and is extremely seasonal.

Interesting, so LOT is planning a September start for SFO. Did not see that coming, figured it'd be next year.

I had booked UA IAH-YYC in September hoping that everything would be settled by then. Flight got pulled so I opted to just cancel outright. :(

Leisure dead due to school and business just dead.

No debate on the latter, but don't be so quick to call leisure dead because of school starting; with many school districts returning to online learning, one thing they heard loud and clear was that the kids needed a flexible online schedule so working parents could help the kids after work hours and on weekends. The end result is that most of the online curriculum out there allows kids to learn from anywhere, at anytime, as long as there's a reliable internet connection.

More than a few of my friends who are parents have perked up at this and started planning fall/winter trips knowing they can take the kids' Chromebooks wherever they go on vacation and get the work done on the trip. I know my wife and I are definitely eyeing some winter travel with our kiddos even though school will be in full swing; the Chromebook will just go with us.
