Looks like a 737-800.

Overshot the runway for sure, that front end looks a right mess. Hopefully only injuries and no fatalities but that doesn’t look nice.
Quoted as heavy rainfall at the time

Sound similar to their overrun back in 2010

That's the only a/c type that they operate.

And IX has had a history of bad flying. A couple of years ago another of their aircraft overshot the runway at Kochi. In another incident last year , the pilot scraped the boundary wall In Madurai during takeoff, knocking off some of the belly panels. He realized it after two hours of flying and diverted to Mumbai.

Unfortunately, there's at least one fatality. A pilot has reportedly died:

Does AI Express have a different pilot training system than Air India mainline?

With its relatively small fleet, IX has had several safety related incidents like this, including the deadly IX812 crash back in 2010. But, we rarely hear of such incidents on Air India mainline flights.

Sure looks like it. It is something the DGCA must look into.
Even SpiceJet, the other major 737-800 operator in India, does not seem to be having such incidents.

For real, that is a lot of incidents for such a small carrier. Is IX where the incompetent but politically well-connected pilots end up?

Just saw the issue trending on Twitter right now, but the Twitter trend stated just "Air India", not Air India Express.Apparently, the aircraft had 191 people on board, of which 174 are adults, 10 infants, and 7 crew (2 pilots, 5 F/As). Someone even posted a list of the passenger manifest on Twitter, but I'm not posting it here for privacy reasons and to avoid legal problems.

Flightradar24 just tweeted the METAR at the time of the crash: VOCL 071400Z 26012KT 2000 -RA SCT003 SCT012 FEW025CB OVC080 24/23 Q1008 TEMPO 1500 -RA BR

I'm sure a quite flight path analysis will follow shortly. My condolences to the relatives of the victims.

RIP those who lost lives.

AIX hires only on contract, AFAIK they don't have permanent employees, nothing out of ordinary.

It was a repatriation flight, passengers under normal circumstances require COVID-19 tests and quarantine. This is going to make it more complex.

I think AIX has its own AOC, following the lead of other groups, AIC is in the clear as far as accident data reporting goes.

Looking at the flight radar this was the second approach, with visibility reduced due rain.

Someone posted a tweet stating that the runway in CCJ is on a raised platform basically, almost like what to me looks like a dam or a dam-like construction. How does that affect an approach?

It's called a table-top runway. IXE is similar, where the last IX crash happened (May 2010).

The pilot was a 15 year AIX veteran, ex Indian Air force pilot...so pilot inexperience can't be the case

Korean air cargo crash had a former colonel in the Korean air force with 13,000+ hours.

He still managed to smack a perfectly functional 747 into the ground.

Looks like that final approach was to Runway 10 - that's basically a 12 not tailwind based on the METAR above. That's not gonna help on a wet runway.

191? What the heck. That’s got to be max capacity! Add a belly full of heavy cargo and you create some interesting flying conditions. .

Ryanair fits their 738s with 189 seats. I’m guessing the 191 on board includes crew/pilots.

There have been reports noting a double-digit number of lap infants, which would add to the total number of people without taking up seats.

According to Air India Express' official Facebook page, there were 184 passengers (including 10 infants) and 6 crew members (2 pilots, 4 cabin crew).

Doesn't have to mean it's at Max Landing Weight. And the 738 flies best at MLW, and stops fine too.

That doesn't add up. If there were 191 total on board according to other places, where's that 191st person? Was that an extra passenger not correctly counted, or a 5th cabin crew member? Or were there indeed just 190 souls on the aircraft?

AIX operate the 737-800s at 186 seats which is 3 seats less than the normal maximum limit for the aircraft. The breakdown is 174 pax+ 10 infants + 7 crew. Pretty full flight but no different than a lot of 737-800s at full or close to full capacity.

RIP to all those who have died. Terrible tragedy in these terrible times. Hope everyone else can make a full recovery and IX too can learn from the incident. :(

Another landing incident with a Boeing 737NG in wet weather? Seems like a lot of these incidents in recent years.

From what I can tell, the Indian Government said 191 at first; this was reported widely. The airline then said 190 later.

You are correct. They seem to happen with more frequency. I think India, like Pakistan, needs to pay close attention whom it emits pilot licenses to.

I'm also going to ask if it is time to rethink tabletop runways? This seems too eerily similar to flight 812 at Mangalore.

As someone who has flown out of CCJ many times, I can tell you that even as you are rolling down the runway, you can easily see the steep cliff not far from the edge of the runway. There isn't a whole lot of wiggle room for an airplane that skids off to the side, whether it's due to pilot error or wind etc.

It's not just AIX that they need to look into. Indian Airport Authority really needs to take major action to make tabletops safer.

The plane was carrying full load of passengers and cargo. May be AIX could have considered limiting the passengers and cargo during monsoon season. It has been raining heavily in the West Coast of India for the past few days.

I flew one for 8 years. I’m intimately familiar with the flying characteristics of the aeroplane. I’ve never flown one with that kind of passenger (191?) config.

Max seating is 189 for the B737-800 - this specific one had Y186

2020 just isn't a good year at all.
RIP to those who didn't make it and speedy recovery to all the others.

It seems like most of these types of accidents fall hard on the pilots, but so sorry to hear they both passed away.
In the few pictures I've seen the cockpit seemed to look fairly OK, but I could be wrong. Maybe something similar to the Turkish 737 that crashed in Amsterdam, where the pilots were killed by falling panels inside the cockpit (if memory serves me correct),

Does not appear to have been a second attempt based on the altitude and airspeed from here https://flightaware.com/live/flight/AXB1344

But not sure, just trying to judge based on a graph

Looks like originally they were lined up into the wind and then ended up deciding to land with a tailwind - seems to be an odd choice.

Hello all,
First off, RIP to the pilots and those killed. Hoping the dead numbers are low considering the aircraft went down a cliff and those injured. It’s all too soon and it’s dark there but I would suspect the people lost were towards the front. I don’t see the cockpit, the front fuselage is serrated aft of where the front doors would be. Also at that particular angle of footage there is light under the front fuselage where the front baggage compartment would be even with the floor. For the people onboard, it was sheer terror. Not knowing or speculating if they landed long or fast, it will come out later, I would question why they would have max passengers and probably cargo/baggage on this flight coming into a tricky airfield during known heavy/monsoon rains. Also I can’t help but mention that this 737-800 looks like same three piece breakup of this type in recent history the Pegasus flight being the most recent...

Same here and still operate it. Most I've had so far is 203. (189Y config)

Wow, you’re better than I. As I recall our max was 160’ish. It’s been a few years. I did find them different at max weight, even more when combined with landing in weather. With 203 passengers the weight has to be approaching max. Is India similar to ME? I’ve had friends tell me horror stories about items either checked or brought on board. Bags of sand, rocks, tires, etc. Definitely creates some calculation gymnastics.
