FAQ

SOURCE: OAG

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

What’s up with Cape at Marion?
Just awarded a 4 year contract in late 2019, and the runway expansion was finished just two weeks ago?

You've had a few weird things pop up in here the past few weeks (like that HZ flight in Eastern Russia) but for whatever reason the code seems to be picking up this MDR code, which is for Maasai Mara, Kenya.

Just for fun, to save anyone else from having to look them up the airlines are B5: East African Safari Air Express, F2: Safarilink, and P2: AirKenya Express.

Anyway, thanks for doing this every week!

The 9K stuff seems off as they haven't started Manistee yet and are selling it along with the other EAS routes.
Also, seems a lot of routes that were operated last year in Sep show as [0] in a few spots. WN list has many of these inaccuracies....

I believe these are all Tecnam P2012 Traveller flights and my guess is they fell out of the system based on an issue with the aircraft type code. It's a new/unusual aircraft, of course. If the designator Cape submitted changed or was dropped from the receiver side that mismatch could be trouble. These are all EAS routes and they can't just drop them.

The Tecnam P2012 has been getting rave reviews in the cities they are using it in. Roomier and quieter than previous planes.

Anybody have any idea what reliability has been so far?

I'm glad to see DAL adding back JFK-NAS in NOV. Thought that wouldn't return until spring atleast.

LOL. Thanks. I'm assuming the World Area Code for those flights is wrong OR, more likely, filed as blank which prevents it from being filtered.

Yes, probably that. I wonder when that will get fixed? That means the Tecnam code is still invalid even after all these weeks. You'd think that would have been fixed by now. I don't even record the equipment type on my side, so it is happening before it gets to me.

Good catch. So many problems lately since they changed the file format. It looks like the SEP prior year data is always 0. I will see if I can fix it.

EDIT: See if this fixes it. Seems like the prior year was shifted by a month.

No, as mentioned above, if it's a Tecnam P2012, it doesn't show in this listing. And RUT is starting to switch to the Tecnam.

these routes are still showing in Sabre. So it could have maybe been a glitch on their end.

CX didn't give up on Boston entirely, and KE is coming back.

Baby steps.

Thanks, as always, for these weekly posts. A highlight of the week, still learning to have my brain benchmark these as a sign of Tuesday rather than Sunday!

I suspect part of the issue on RZH is that it is currently the IATA code for Preobrazheniye in the Russian Far East, but it was previously the code for Quartz Hill Airport in Lancaster, CA prior to its closure. Wouldn't be surprised if something was missed with a code reassignment between two fairly obscure airports.

I had no idea UA wasn’t already serving DEN-SUX. That seems right in their wheelhouse.

Thanks as always Enilria. As far as the WN schedule, obviously quite a few flights are suspended for September. Of those, a number of them show a return in October. Does this mean WN intends at this point for them to return in October as opposed to decisions to be made later and/or return to regular schedule for the flights that only show September cuts?

I suspect this not a frequency reduction, but more likely a slipped start date of a week or something.

On our current trend as we get closer they shave the most. So September has the least and then October has more until you get to the full schedule in FEB or whenever. I don't trust anything until it's 2 weeks out now. There is also big motivation to overpublish the schedule and cancel down the bookings on to what remains as a bait and switch strategy to boost RASM. So, I don't think October is real. September is maybe not fully real. It was kind of the opposite in May looking at June and July where airlines were layering in flying as we got closer. Now it is the opposite. The CARES Act sunset on 9/30 is also a REALLY BIG DEAL. What happens on 10/1 is a huge question mark.

Yeah its an interesting time and all of the traditional demand / capacity planning rules have been tossed out the window.

With where we are at now in this thing, almost any future bookings that haven't been cancelled were booked prior to the onset of the pandemic (March 2020).
The advanced booking window we are now in is almost all within 3 weeks of departure, which is even less than the they typical 5-6 week period that was pre-pandemic.

The airlines can get away with all of the close-in adjustments because they have such an enormous amount of slack with aircraft and crews.
However, right now most close-in schedule adjustments are reductions off of the previously published schedules.

Enilria - like you said, there is a lot of question marks about what happens after 10/1. Are we going to see a lot of temporary route suspensions? I'd venture to guess than any airline that is serving a non-EAS airport with 1-2x daily right now is at a big risk of getting suspended in October.

It's going to depend on what bookings look like, as you know, but the breakeven LF by route is going to shoot up after October 1st (still lower than pre-COVID levels) without an extension of the CARES act.

So hypothetically if demand were to stay flat from today though Oct, routes/frequencies that are logical to operate now will likely become uneconomical by Oct 1st. Assuming no giant swing in bookings one way another, I think we'll likely just see continued shrinkage from secondary & tertiary hubs (AA-NYC/LAX, UA-LAX, DL-BOS, e.t.c) and the large connecting complexes remaining at September levels.

Thanks for the refresher. Last system I used was Navitaire. I think they used the easier-to-understand numbered days of the week (i.e., X67).

I'm confused what you mean by "not yet allowed to receive international flights." DEN has international flights on Aeromexico, Volaris and Southwest. Volaris came back in July, and they're up to 3 destinations from DEN.

When did UA ever launch IAD-SAL to begin with? I never heard anything about that. Did Avianca drop that route recently?

Everything I've heard WN is going to rerelease the October thru January 4 with a more scaled down schedule vs the previous almost full schedule.
They also will release January-April 11 schedules.

Thanks. With the October deadline looming, unless a CARES act extension is passed in the next 24 hours, they may have to re-re-release it again once legislation is finalized!

I’m trying to figure out why some flights show only September cuts and some show October adjustments as well if it was not an intentional October filing on the airline’s part?

I believe he’s referring to flights from the Schengen countries, UK, Ireland, China and Brazil. Flights from those countries can only land at the 15 CDC designated “approved” airports. DEN and MSP, for example, are not included on that list and can’t accept flights from KEF.

You can expect enilria to stay busy posting change lists for a while. Carriers don't want to accept that demand is still off 70% (2020 demand the week 8/2-8/8 was 27.3% of 2019 TSA screening numbers) and schedule Sept accordingly. IMHO they'll schedule maybe 50-60% for 4Q and pare things (almost) weekly.

Maybe the industry will get a CARES Act Payroll Support Program extension (and the city must-serve mandate that came along in the first round). If not, the route cuts to be loaded after must-serve requirements expire will be unprecedented.

I believe these are all Tecnam P2012 Traveller flights and my guess is they fell out of the system based on an issue with the aircraft type code. It's a new/unusual aircraft, of course. If the designator Cape submitted changed or was dropped from the receiver side that mismatch could be trouble. These are all EAS routes and they can't just drop them.

knope, you're our resident EAS guru, so I have a question for you:

Does UA*'s addition of ALS mean SkyWest is taking over the Essential Air Service contract there from Boutique Air?

I flew DEN-ALS-DEN in October, to log ALS and go hiking at Great Sand Dunes National Monument. I chatted with an airport employee in Alamosa, and he said he was hoping Sky West would get the EAS contract, because it would help Alamosa's economy if the city was served by jets.

OT, I really loved my visit to Great Sand Dunes. I was there when the aspens in the Sangre de Cristo mountains were at their peak, so I hiked through them in the morning, then hiked to the top of the sand dunes in the afternoon. Anyone who is in excellent physical health should try to non rev to Alamosa this fall to experience Great Sand Dunes' beauty.

Yes, UA's addition of ALS does mean SkyWest got the EAS contract. Effective Oct. 1 ALS will get jet service for the first time ever. Boutique got the boot.

Route suspensions hell yes. The question is whether whole stations close. That could go either way I think. DOT was kinda allowing anything goes on station closures near the end, but maybe it only seemed that way because if you were the "primary" airline at the airport you were being denied. We could see a wave of closures. OTOH, if that were to happen I would think we would be seeing news of it now, but on a third hand perhaps the airlines think that would weaken their political chances with CARES2 if they were so bold as to threaten a bunch of station closures.

Certainly UA's move to add a bunch of pt2pt Florida markets like B6 did smells of cash desperation and those planes come from somewhere.

Final point. While California continues to pull away from the rest of the country on new cases, Florida is now declining significantly. Texas too, but to a lesser extent. I think that will lead to increased Winter traffic to the warm Southern markets. IMHO, we are going to see another wave of COVID cases hit the cold States in 45-60 days starting in places like MN and then moving down into PA/OH. I say those States because they are urban (people are close together and more easily transmit) and were not hit very hard last time around and they have less immunity, but it could certainly come back to MA/CT/MI/NY/etc as well. If the latter happens we will have another big air travel meltdown and I think it gets quite bad. My hope and belief is that it will not be big in the repeat States, but could be bad in those "virgin" States.

Part of me says that CARES just keeps airlines from making the long term decisions they need to make. When this looked temporary CARES made sense. I think that is becoming the problem with CARES2.

Thanks as always for these weekly posts and all the effort and time put in to produce them. The UA P2P routes to Florida seem like darts on a wall, in the hope something sticks. They're intended to be short seasonal services, but I just don't see UA making any money on them, notably in those markets where they will have a lot of competition from the ULCCs, B6, and DL and AA. It feels like a desperate capacity dump more than anything else and a way to keep planes (and employees) in the air.

That's a great point, Enilria, and I'm inclined to agree. And 2020 being an election year seems to muddy things considerably for CARES2.

AA could cancel service to up to 30 destinations as CARES funding / service funding ends next month.
Changes could start showing up in the schedule next week.

I'm actually excited to see the reshuffling of the deck. It's like civil aviation being born again. I find it interesting that all the routes that were added in the pay to play scheme have all been pretty much dropped which to me says that after the incentive money was gone so too shall follow the service..

I am sure there are several stations that UA, DL, and even AS & B6 would look at terminating pretty quickly where demand isn't there is this environment.

This might be the dumbest hot take I've seen in a long time.

I'll say it here first. DL is likely to suspend a lot of small markets from your beloved DTW.

This isn't civil aviation being reborn.....its the apocalypse.
