WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

HOW DO I READ IT?

XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

Air Canada/BA/DL's cuts almost confirmed that US is not going to open up in September. And 70% chance it won't open in October neither. So when will AA/UA further cut the transatlantic capacity?

Thanks! up? No, Fall is a a disaster. I think we all knew that. That's part of why the CARES Act ended 9/30, I think people realized Fall is sink or swim.

Thanks enilria for the update.

It's really interesting AA continues to be out of BOS-LAX. This is a market they used to dominate.

AS has now cut JFK-LAX all the until mid November. Not sure how they make a comeback here when every other airlines have been running multiple daily during this time.

DL made quite a few cuts until Christmas it looks. I'm assuming those are more likely to get the permanent cut than other ones. All the recent MIA adds have basically been cut down.

Heck, they are adding BOS-Florida, too. That's even more crazy than LGA-Florida. CO used to run a couple of LGA-FLL back in the day with slots they needed to keep using (I'd presume left over from the days of when they operated LGA-DEN) and UA ran LGA-MIA to feed the hub they acquired from PA. I don't think CO or UA ever operated BOS-Florida non-stop.

That is not correct! In this case it means that flights are suspended through September 16, then (are scheduled to) resume daily on September 17.

Exactly. People are so stuck in their old ways of thinking about retaliatory routes and the “my airline vs yours” mentality. This is a new reality. No airline has money to waste on silly retaliation now. Furthermore, who is fighting for market share in an environment where demand is down 70% YoY. On top of that, UA is only flying these routes for a few months. UA is flying these routes because they are trying to tap into the little demand that exists. Unlike DL that has a hub in ATL that can be used to funnel Florida traffic and AA who has both MIA which can absorb a lot of the O&D into So. Fla and CLT which can funnel Florida traffic, UA essentially has to do it through nonstop flights as they don’t really have a natural hub for all that traffic to FL. As to why LGA vs EWR, it’s probably because the EWR has essentially been (temporarily) dismantled due to the lack of business travel and they probably feel that LGA gives them more O&D traffic.

LGA expands the market, to the degree that some people just don't want to use EWR (or would need to be bribed with significantly lower fares from EWR than UA wants to offer). The downside to that UA will take longer to rebuild EWR volumes, and higher volumes can mean higher gauge/lower CASM, and more non-stop destinations - which can be leveraged to increase gauge and destination count yet further. I'm not arguing they're wrong (they have the fare data!) but it's hard to find obviously successful paths in any of this. That's why some carriers are playing things differently from others.

I would assume airlines are looking at routes they can fill planes even if it's with low yield leisure travel. I doubt that in today's environment any airline will purposely lose more money to "get back at a competitor." LGA/FL in the winter time is a good bet for filling a plane with capacity that will bring in needed cash flow but probably still lose money.

It can also mean they are flying daily for half the month. It doesn't distinguish when the flights are.

So flying daily for half the month is the same thing as flying 3-4 days a week in the report. I couldn't check all of these, but OAK-OGG is just not operating from Sep 1-16 and is operating Sep 17-30 in the schedule. Of course, that could be deleted later.

I would guess that is the case for all of these.

Interesting to see UA beefing up service to SAL, GUA and SJO from IAD, LAX, IAH and EWR. I don’t think IAD has ever been daily and they only operated LAX from SAL for a brief period a few years ago.

If you think about it, UA is in perfect position to capture Central American traffic.
-It has a hub that is geographically situated to feed those markets in IAH
-It has hubs in 4 of the 5 largest Central American markets in the US with only MIA missing.

LAXSAL was flown daily, with some holiday/peak adds for at least 10 years in the 2000s.
IADSAL flew during 2013 with a mix of daily and sub daily

Well, LGA-Florida demand in winter (as with BOS-Florida) isn't all that great outside some spikes at Thanksgiving, Christmas/New Year's, and the MLK holiday. From Labor Day to Presidents' Day, there are typically bargain basement fares available outside those peaks. Patterns might be different this winter with distance learning and work-from-home continuing for many white collar workers -- so I could see people renting a house for a week or month in Florida to escape the cold.

Given the number of people thrown out of work, and continues at 1 million plus every week, and the reduction in unemployment compensation (with even the $300 Federal kicker not expect to last much past the of September) that could put a damper on travel-to anywhere. We shall see.

I walked by an MIA AA flight boarding to JFK this morning. The gate area was totally packed. And given the few connections out of JFK they were mostly all O&D. Quarantines didn't seem to be effecting that particular flight.

Heck, they are adding BOS-Florida, too. That's even more crazy than LGA-Florida. CO used to run a couple of LGA-FLL back in the day with slots they needed to keep using (I'd presume left over from the days of when they operated LGA-DEN) and UA ran LGA-MIA to feed the hub they acquired from PA. I don't think CO or UA ever operated BOS-Florida non-stop.


I'm not sure why so many folks here are surprised at BOS and LGA additions -- I venture to guess that maybe it's because most folks either didn't know or forgot that UA maintains a crew base out there in BOS (LGA is a co-terminal base with EWR). Thus, it's relatively easy to deploy readily available aircraft (loads of narrowbodies) with local crews to high demand markets when necessary.

The aircraft (and it's concombinant costs) and crews are still being paid for even whilst sitting around -- might as well deploy them and earn a little extra in the meantime. :)

You are indeed monitored in NY. I just got off of a 14-day quarantine a week and a half ago after returning from LAS.

I can't speak for AA but UA's limited TATL flights have been operating for some time during this pandemic. In the past the reason these flights have not shown up on the OAG report is because UA has been running most of our TATL flights as cargo only flights.

With most of Europe remaining closed to nonessential U.S. travelers, what UA has done is open up some of these flights to essential travelers only. The amount of passengers on many of our European flights is so minuscule that the flights are still essentially a cargo flight. With so few passengers the ramp can fit all the bags either in the bulk pit or if necessary they may need up to 2 LD3 containers, the remainder of the aircraft's belly is filled with cargo. To outsiders it may look like UA is taking a gamble and operating more TATL flights than necessary, however I can assure you that is not the case. These aircraft are already flying back and forth to Europe with cargo what UA has done is open them up to essential travelers.

The lone exception to Europe that I've seen on the UA side are flights to FRA. We are seeing a lot more passengers traveling to/from (or transiting through) FRA. The higher passenger loads impacts the amount of cargo we can load. This is why UA has continued cargo only flights in addition to passenger service flights to/from FRA. UA is also still running a limited number of cargo only flights to/from LHR. However the number of cargo only has come down as a result of more UA passenger service flights operating, but our load factors to/from LHR are abysmal when compared to FRA which again is good for cargo.

Sort of, they can just drop the flights easily. It's customers who are betting really.

IDK. I guess the flights were still loaded. Perhaps they had some number of bookings on those days and are waiting to see if anybody will really fly?

Indeed. In fact I'm pretty sure AC never operated a single SNA-YVR flight before cancelling. No point spending money opening a secondary station when you're already probably losing a pile of money at LAX these days.

The quarantines and restrictions are in place in NY/NJ/CT because we got COVID under control after the initial terrible outbreak and people don't want to get a second wave here. This politicization of public health actions taken to protect New Yorkers is really sickening.

There is a publicly known criteria on how a state is determined to require quarantine and the list is updated based on that criteria. Get your fact straight.

I also see it as an opportunity to seize market share. I also suspect heavy O/D destinations are the way to go to make money during these times. Also, GUA was having an incredible year in terms of tourism, which I hope will bounce back once all of this is over. SAL has had more VFR traffic to the US than GUA in the past, so not surprised to see these additions.
