BOAC 747-136 question

Mon Aug 24, 2020 7:16 am

Hi BOAC Lovers ,
Could you tell me when BOAC received its first 747-100 and when they operated their first passenger revenue services . ( the Wikipedia and other sources say many different arguments about that )
Many thanks.

747-136, L/N 23, C/N 19761, BOAC, N1799B, G-AWNA, F/F March 15th 1970, Delivered April 22th 1970.
BOAC 747-136 aircraft did not enter commercial service until 14 April 1971 due to BOAC's inability to settle crewing and pay rates with the British Air Line Pilots' Association (BALPA).
Operating a twin over the ocean, you're always one engine failure from a total emergency.

What was the basis of the pilots pay dispute ? Was it purely based around the 747 or fleet wide ?

Are there any of the original BA 747-136 left? I flew on BA G-AWNE from LHR - JFK in 1980.

It seems to be stored somewhere in Nigeria. Is that still the case? If so its pretty remarkable after nearly 50 years.

My very first flight was on November Echo, a C of A air test.

Google maps shows some “stored” Kabo 747s sitting around in Mallam Aminu Kano airport. It’s possibly one of them.

G-AWNA delivered April 70, -AWNB in May. Like others said they spent a year sat on the ground (presumably at West Base?).

Pilot dispute was over pay and how many flightcrew up front. Below is an archived copy of Flight's June 1970 edition.

Also, this NYT article from May 70 covers the topic of the dispute. https://www.nytimes.com/1970/05/28/arch ... spute.html

The nose of G-AWNG is at the Hiller Museum in San Carlos, CA painted as a Flying Tigers nose.
I believe all the others are gone (broken up / scrapped), including the Kabo Air examples.
