FAQ

SOURCE: OAG

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

DL basically gave up on a lot of Intl through the Winter. Anything that shows 0 in JUN I'm assuming is gone for 2021. Not a lot of vaccine hope in the DL HQ it seems.
There are a lot of DL route drops that appear to operate at Thanksgiving or Christmas. I'm assuming they have good bookings for these as of now and they will judge how many people cancel before they decide to operate those flights or not.

The DL intl cuts are so dramatic that while it is not too surprising given the staff reductions, I am a little surprised they would do them now. I almost wonder if they filed this schedule by mistake and will roll it back, but time will tell...

Looks at BA and DL cuts, 2020 Summer Transatlantic season is officially RIP.

The next round would be winter cuts. As enilria said about DL's prediction on vaccine, I somewhat agree, and I think I won't be surprised to see 2020/2021 Winter/Spring schedule get cut as deep as the 2020 summer as well.

They already had a press release last week about the planned TATL and TPAC operation for W20-21 and S21:

https://news.delta.com/delta-brings-bac ... ummer-2021

DL isn’t even the first of the US3 to adjust their W20-21 and S21 long-haul flying..AA already released their initial plans back in early July:

DL made a big press release announcing their winter 2021 and summer 2021 TPAC and TATL flying last week and then subsequently loaded the changes this past weekend.
It was buried in some of the Delta-specific threads on the forum but worth mentioned in this one as well.

The summary table in the press release shows the routes they plan to fly:

MSP-TVC has been flown seasonally for decades, and typically sees mainline in the summer months.
DL did not operate MSP-TVC in Covid Summer 2020, along with LGA-TVC, or ATL-TVC and connected everything through DTW.
Tourism was very strong still this summer in Northern Michigan, and it looks like they are bringing back MSP-TVC for the fall.

I think that’s Kona Shuttle operated by KaiserAir’s 737s

I think a lot of the international drops (in addition to there obviously being lower demand) is also forced by a reduction in fleet size. With all of the 777 and other frames exiting the system, there simply isn’t enough widebodies to serve all of the routes, even if they wanted to.

Future long haul international growth by DL will likely be somewhat dictated by the delivery rates of the new A350s and A330s.

Big ski cuts for DL. No more Aspen, Steamboat or Telluride. Only one route left for EGE, one for SUN and two for JAC after December.

With ~2,000 pilot furloughs on top of ~1,800 pilot voluntary separations I don't think there's any doubt that DL is planning to be a lot smaller. We'll see which carriers persist in scheduling ~75% of last year's capacity and then cancelling just a month ahead (or even day of flight).

On the other hand I don't think 'gone for good' is a term I would use right now in the case of specific routes -- not until DL announces it's closing a station.

Looks like DL is pulling completely out of Costa Rica? That has to be a misfile... Seems they're also cutting almost all capacity to major leisure destinations like SJD, PVR, MBJ, and PUJ...
This is my signature until I think of a better one.

Exactly, these are unprecedented times. Nothing is really "gone for good" at this point, it just means they are not going to fly it for Winter, or Summer 2021.
Makes sense that a lot of secondary and/or seasonal Europe flying is not going to operate and instead its going to be concentrated around their core hubs, gateways, and JV hubs.

The reality is Summer 2021 International is going to be way down no matter what. There is no scenario or trajectory toward anywhere near a normal amount of International travel demand next summer. We are still battling the virus on a global scale, border closures, quareteen protocols, and travel restrictions and the like are still going to exist in the months ahead, but hopefully some things become more certain or ease-up.

These seasonal flights to secondary Europe destinations disproportionately rely upon American tourists and VFR. A huge chunk of these involve traveling families, retirees, and tour groups/package deals. A lot of these people fall into at-risk categories and aren't going to be in a huge hurry to be a first-mover at returning to international travel.

DL has said publicly, their goal is to be "60-65%" for Summer 2021. That in reality means at about 50% for international and about 75-80% for domestic.

interesting start time. There should be a lot of pent up VFR demand from west coast to PVG, but I'm not sure if there is enough business demand to carry this flight with so many carriers on the route.

These are pretty large cuts from CA so early in the booking cycle. CA typically fills large portion of their cabin with connection traffic to rest of Asia.

Again, makes me wonder how US3 will be able to sustain some of the TPAC capacity that they have announced they will keep operating.

JetBlue is going to be dancing in the streets with some of these DL Jamaica and JFK island cuts. Wow, they are basically out of Jamaica outside of 2 flights from ATL. That is shocking.

Not a surprise that that JFK-BOM and ATL-PVG are gone from the summer. I guess 2022 at the earliest. Is there any reason for them to restart JFK-BOM again?

Regarding BA, I don't understand why they maintain 1x weekly service to many smaller destinations like AUS, MSY, BNA or SJC. Is the nonstop yield so good - even at such low frequencies - that they don't just route people through AA's hubs?

These are massive cuts for every single carrier. It’s just mind-boggling...especially B6 and WN. The two with a lot of optimism seem to have hit a brick wall of reality. And poor Hawaii...yet another month of failure to relaunch.

Carriers can have a lot of optimism but that doesn't matter in this environment.
The demand curve isn't under normal market conditions and can't be easily stimulated by normal means.

Its not a "if you fly it, they will come" environment, nor even fire-saling tickets either.

The normal drivers of travel and purposes of trips just aren't there in the near-term.

We've had a lot of discussion in the booking trends thread, but the reality is that we are looking now really at outside of the potential for a few minor demand spikes around the holidays, the demand really isn't going to rachet upward significantly until Q2 2021.

DL certainly seems to be more responsible than others by giving TATL travellers a lot more warning to adjust their plans.
I note that some of the other carriers have just cancelled all / most the flights on a route as close in as September - that is really annoying and disruptive if you're a traveller.

(and I don't doubt that the other airlines will have to take the same cuts on TATL as DL, just they will leave it later to announce. DL are unlikely to be an outlier (although to allude to another thread, they may be allowing their JV partners to operate a disproportionate share of the flights))

interesting start time. There should be a lot of pent up VFR demand from west coast to PVG, but I'm not sure if there is enough business demand to carry this flight with so many carriers on the route.

Thanks as always!

Some interesting notes:
-I don't think CLT-SJD/STX have ever had daily service, but were always Saturday-only service. SJD might have daily service at one point but it didn't last.
-I also don't remember the last time CLT had twice daily CLT-STT service.

Like CLT's Germany service, I always assumed that ATL's Germany service was similar in that it was propped up by corporate contracts. I know the STR flight catered to MB/Porsche, and carried a substantial amount of GSA traffic. I'm wondering if the STR suspension has something to do with a corporate account telling DL that the flight is essentially worthless until next year.

The DL DUS flight was the last remaining year-round nonstop to the US. Sad to see it gone, but frankly I am surprised to see it last as long as it did. Hopefully it will come back in some shape or form.

I know AA mentioned the possibility of running CLT-Secondary Germany with the A321XLR, but that was pre-COVID of course.

A lot of these b6 cuts seem to be related to the quarenteen directives of a few northeastern states. Florida and Arizona seem to be on the back side of this thing.... as long as there isn't a second wave I could see considerable adds as the quarenteens get cut. Arizona has to average 800 or less cases a day and florida in the mid 2000s. As soon as that happens, the flood gates could open on NYC-Florida travel.

I don't think the Jamaica cuts are correct. I still see JFK-MBJ available for booking in Oct, Nov, Dec (peak holiday period even shows 2 flights a day), Jan, Feb, March, etc.

I also see LAX-SJO available in late December, January....

4B CNM-DFW SEP 0.5>1.0[1.0] OCT 0.5>1.0[1.0] NOV 0.5>0.8[0.9]

This flight normally runs daily all the time, must have been a previous schedule misfile. In either case, there's going to be a lot more demand for it if AA goes thru with chopping ROW-DFW (CNM is the next closest to ROW but still 75 miles away).

Well, Delta is saying they plan to fly more in Summer 2021 than this Winter. That's saying VERY LITTLE. If they didn't do that I think the shareholders would fire them all.

It feels like this schedule is "what are we definitely flying" and then they will layer stuff onto it. Perhaps there is a layer already added.

I think the ".1" frequency might be a bit misleading. Those October counts and service don't begin until 10/25 -- when the winter sked kicks in -- so in most cases, I think the Oct frequencies are only representing about a weeks worth of flights. Without looking at BA's flight skeds, my guess is that the ".1" translates to more like at least 2 weekly flights... Just my assumption. Enilria will need to confirm.

I trust the Delta official press release of their winter/summer 21 schedule: https://news.delta.com/delta-brings-back-more-flights-across-atlantic-and-pacific-winter-and-summer-2021

ATL-DUS was an automotive industry route, name Mercedes-Benz. Just like ATL-STR but that one has more revenue, namely Mercedes and Porsche legs to stand on hence why that one is staying afloat during hard times.

DUS will return someday, Mercedes-Benz USA HQ is in ATL.

Probably to legitimize it with the various non-customer stakeholders that yes they are going to be much smaller next summer.
Those stakeholders knew there would be fewer aircraft with the announced 777 and 763 retirements.
This helps show why there will be furloughs and layoffs across various employee groups.
Its not just smoke and mirrors.
Releasing a schedule now helps give better certainty.

Also has implications with the JV partner flying that we will all see in the weeks/months ahead.

DL probably also doesn't want to unnecessarily start incurring potential refund exposure if they start taking bookings for flights/markets/routes they will not operate.

WN DAL-PNS SEP 1.4>2[1.0]
WN HOU-PNS SEP 1.3>2[1.0] OCT 1.0>1.2[1.0]

Interesting to see the close in adds by WN at PNS. Looking at the schedules, it looks like WN was close to overselling (relative to the limited seating capacity) some of the HOU and DAL flights and realized they needed another section in September. WN will have more daily weekday flights this September (6 flights) at PNS, than they did last September (4 flights).

Noticed DTW - BMI is coming back on October 1. Seems pretty surprising to add this route again in the middle of a pandemic. The huge Rivian auto plant starting up near BMI must be a big factor.

Like SANfan said, it is not 1 weekly flights to many places. What happened is that the winter season starts around 24th/25th October, and BA so far only mde cuts into summer season. So there is one week worth of flights in end of October.

Suppose 0.1 frequency is an average daily frequency, that translate to 0.7 weekly, as October has more than 4 weeks, So that is 2.8 - 3 frequencies for the whole October. Which makes sense as BA has not formally cut the winter/spring schedule yet. I hope that helps and I hope enilria can confirm later.

If long-term accurate (which I suspect it's not) then it may just be utilization.

There's also the limitation that none of these secondary (and even a few FAA large-hubs, e.g. SAN/TPA/etc) are yet cleared by the US to receive nonstop TATLs; so BA may just be bumming the schedules waiting for that.

I say all this considering that most of these routes were daily or 4xW when the last adjustment was made, only two or three weeks ago, but not killed off per the likes of PIT/PDX/CHS/YYC.
I myself, suspect a more prosaic motive... ~Thranduil

This is not rocket science regarding BA, its a simple google.com/flights or ba.com search and you will see its only the last week of the month.

It's just that simple.

I like how UA is being opportunistic and is seizing market share in Central America. I guess having hubs at Central America’s biggest O/D cities helps.

DL did not operate MSP-TVC in Covid Summer 2020, along with LGA-TVC, or ATL-TVC and connected everything through DTW.
Tourism was very strong still this summer in Northern Michigan, and it looks like they are bringing back MSP-TVC for the fall.

2 thoughts on TVC-MSP being added for October:

(1) There was one February in the early 2010s where I flew TVC-MSP (MSP as my destination, no connection) on Delta. It definitely hasn't always been year-around, but there was at least one winter it was around.

(2) Cape Air is starting MBL-ORD on October 1st. Only an 11-seat plane.

But, more interestingly, those flights will code share with American. Ludington and Manistee aren't the biggest places in the world, but it's fair to say they are part of TVC's catchment area. The American code-share means those folk don't necessarily need to make the 1 hour trip to GRR or MKG or TVC if they're flying west or south and need to connect anyway.

I wonder if Delta's add of TVC-MSP is partially a defensive move against that.

This is an a.net myth ATL-STR has nothing to do with automotive traffic it is just the icing on the cake. ATL-STR was started almost 40 years ago before those plants and HQs were even there. STR is all about military moving from the Southern US dtste to bases in Southern Germany.

Regarding BA, I don't understand why they maintain 1x weekly service to many smaller destinations like AUS, MSY, BNA or SJC. Is the nonstop yield so good - even at such low frequencies - that they don't just route people through AA's hubs?

I think the ".1" frequency might be a bit misleading. Those October counts and service don't begin until 10/25 -- when the winter sked kicks in -- so in most cases, I think the Oct frequencies are only representing about a weeks worth of flights. Without looking at BA's flight skeds, my guess is that the ".1" translates to more like at least 2 weekly flights... Just my assumption. Enilria will need to confirm.

I think you are correct. It is a partial month.

Agreed on the customer friendly-ness, just surprised they would not scoop up bookings by over-selling Summer 2021.

It's probably about CARES as is the AA announcement.

I think like the national parks, TVC is the type of place people feel safe to go to in COVID so it is seeing some longer seasons on flights.

The auto traffic is J. Military is Y. It's more than icing.

It's too bad SEA-KIX isn't in the cards anymore.

Nice to see PVD coming back to life.

Not to rain on the parade, but this looks to me like DL probably just extended September cuts into early November and hasn't cut further out yet. Hopefully they will be back in PVD as soon as traffic starts to return, as Providence is it's own decent-sized area and not just some Boston suburb...

It is surprising that DL cut off MSP completely from AMS, CDG and LHR until next summer. When was the last time (pre-Covid) MSP did not have a flight to AMS?

With DL making so many cuts everywhere else, they are obviously keeping SEA flights that aren’t profitable in order to keep gates.

SO what are all the "numerous routes" that they've cut for next summer? I went to the posted link on DL's news hub and saw that many of the existing ones are still listed at daily frequency for summer 2021.
