Updated: Another jetpack sighting while on approach to LAX

Tue Sep 01, 2020 4:12 am

American Airlines pilot reported seeing a guy in a jetpack at about 3000ft near the aircraft as they were on approach to LAX. There's even a recorded conversation between the AA pilot and ATC.

How many people in LA own a jetpack? It might not be too difficult for LAPD to find a suspect. This is a whacky story.

I’ve seen quite a few things in my career, some of them unexplainable but a jet pack? That’s a first, bizarro.

Here’s a wild guess, it’s some kind of remote with a dummy/mannequin strapped to it. Crazy I know but like I said, wild guess.

Weird story.
I didn't know Jetpacks could achieve this altitude.... at least safely. Are Jetpacks regulated in the way large drones are?

If there's any place in the world with a concentration of jet pack owners, it's gotta be the land of Hollywood. :D

So any word on what the man with the jetpack was up to? Fist-fighting another man with a jetpack? Carrying a beautiful woman in one arm? Catching a canister of film from a spy satellite? Wrestling a shark with a laser beam on its head? These are all things you do with a jetpack. Or, so I'm told.

Franky Zapata flew his Flyboard Air across the English Channel in 2019 with 1 refueling stop. He claims his version can achieve a height of 3000 meters (9,800 ft) per Wiki.

Several others have reportedly been working on models that can also do better than the typical 30-35 seconds of flight of the hydrogen-peroxide rocket version which has been featured in many movies, stunts, and the 1984 Olympics.

Quite possible. The contact was 10 miles from the airport so I'm not sure a person would recognize that they were automatically in a normal flight path for aircraft.

Have a great day,

There's a fairly good chance it was a hobbyist who made his own. RC jet engines have reached a stage where you can start experimenting with homemade jetpacks yourself. I'm not saying it is a good idea, but all the ingredients are easily accessible and you can find loads of inspiration on Youtube:

Given the amount of wealth that exists in that area, I'm not at all surprised that something like this appears to have happened. We know of the guys in Europe that have their own jet powered wing suit, as well as this crew from Dubai...

https://www.upi.com/Odd_News/2020/02/18 ... 582055246/

So, there are certainly suits out there that are capable of getting up to that altitude. It's just a matter of time before someone does something really stupid with one and they all get regulated out of existence.

Words that have never been said before in aviation history, 'Tower, American 1997, we just passed a guy in a jetpack,'

I am going to Live ATC archives to see if I can find it for a download. That would be some horrible FOD.

Well, the Flying Nun could. And without Jetpacks. In one of the episodes she flew as high as a 707 and bade farewell to an unbelieving gentleman outside the window. PS. And she was far more good-looking than Rocketeer. Same pose.

Based on this ATC description: “JetBlue 23, use caution, person in a jetpack reported 300 yards south of the LA final, at about 3,000 feet, 10 mile final.”...that would put this happening somewhere around Downey/South Gate/Bell Gardens (that general area)?

That's assuming they were landing on the south side

One of my thoughts on this was, if the jetpack dude really was 300' off the side of the plane, the pilots would't have been able to see them till they were just about on top of them. This could very well have ended in disaster super easy. Jetpacker sucked into engine, hit by any part of the plane itself. Not good.

Caution wake turbulence from the Jetpack....
Jetpack N123AB cleared for the ILS 25L approach.....
United 123 heavy you are number 2 for landing, follow the jetpack on short final....

Plus - if the jetpack pilot is over like 250 pounds, do you append Heavy to the call sign?

Sorry, couldn't help myself.

Looks like they landed on 25L. Made a bit of a turn for spacing out in the Chino/ONT area but straight in from there.

To reach an altitude of 3,000-feet over the L.A. basin likely it wasn't your garden variety jetpack. It sounds like someone was putting their COVID-19 quarantine time to good use in their garage and manufactured something along the lines of what Yves Rossy wore for his flight over the English Channel.

This is nothing new for Southern California. Decades ago a guy was spotted by airliners, floating high in a law chair attached to helium balloons.

Any chance this jet(wo)man could have jumped from an helicopter or a plane from a higher altitude or at least from somewhere above the ground? This would have helped him/her to reach 3000ft altitude.

Considering the altitude, I think you're on the right track. Think "Otto" in the movie "Airplane". Due to COVID and stay at home orders, coupled with the fact that this occurred in California (I grew up there so I can say that!) people have a lot of time on their hands. The AA crew couldn't have had more than a second or so to see this thing.

Is there no further info about this? I seriously doubt a person in a jet pack was flying FL3 at LAX approach. I know about the jet pack dude but I don’t see him in LA trying that. There’s got to be more info from somebody.

Actually, there is at least one proven system out there with a claim of 3000 meters (9800 ft) and has been flow across the English Channel (with a refueling stop half way).

So 3000 ft is quite doable with a known system (which is not the old hydrogen peroxide rocket packs that typically could only fly for about 35 seconds).

There are multiple others working on different versions using similar modern engines/thrusters.

So, 3000 ft is known to be doable with many minutes of flight time.

I view the reports highly credible.

Have a great day,

I know who that guy is but I doubt it was him in LA. Obviously I believe the pilots but at FL3 you’re going to zip by pretty fast and he’d be a breif sighting especially as you’re descending to land. The cockpit is busy at that point and you’re not looking out the window admiring the sites. I’m just interested in further reports. No passengers or other crew have come forward but I’m sure there are others. Something definitely happened but what they saw is debatable.
