Updated: United to insource rampers at DEN

Tue Sep 01, 2020 1:52 pm

Some VP's are in DEN this morning, and have called in the local media to make an announcement.

No other details at this time.

Mods: the UA network thread doesn't appear to exist anymore? I tried to post in there but said thread doesn't exist.

It's got to be good news*. They would handle bad news with a terse press release at the end of the business day on a Friday.

*Good news in the long run, anyway.

That wouldn't be a VPs-in-DEN-to-make-an-announcement-at-the-airport event. And United can't afford that right now.

Well, who knows? B6 IS leaving LGB, so UA could announce LGB-DEN/SFO. If the rumors are true, we'll just have to wait to find out.

Assume it's a photo-op/walkthrough of B-West? Looked pretty close to complete when I was there last week. With an originally-projected opening in 4Q 2020, this would make sense, as the entire project appeared to proceed on time.

Outside chance of some kind of service announcement, as the company pivots away from high-frequency business routes for the time being, and needs to reallocate capacity, but I'm not sure that requires an on-the-ground management presence. Lately, we've seen social media teasers ahead of big network changes, and I don't see anything on the UA channels.

Are you making a joke? You don't need a VP to announce that. A 1-page press release, the Station Manager, and a dozen helium balloons from Safeway will do it.

In this new Domestic-centric world, DEN is by far UA's most profitable hub right now (or least unprofitable).

Are you sure it’s an announcement? Sometimes big wigs show up to inform work groups they are being downsized

it seems that there's always been an instagram theme that has been put out for new routes, nothing on their page, so I'd say maybe not new routes. but if Jon is at B56, that's not the west side.

while not as groundbreaking news as hinted by management. it is terrific news for employees and the city of denver. this will protect many jobs from layoffs and support higher wage jobs in the city.

how much was being handled by Menzies ramp in the current environment? A and parts of B East piers? Everything on the main structure of B was handled by mainline, right?

also, is this going to be mainline employees or UGE?

united mainline will handle all ramp in Denver. Not UGE.

we have been chipping away at their work for a while now, recently taking over bag rooms for UAX as well as gates up to B60. Menzies handles B80-B95 and all A con UAX. So this is great news. This sends a strong signal, that they are willing to increase labor cost to avoid layoffs during a time when they are trying to decrease costs. Says a lot and I am happy to do the work.

Can you elaborate? Does this mean all the ground service will become UA employee vs subcontracted to a Swissport or Menzies?

I'm guessing UGE will still be doing cabin cleaning, water and lav?
