WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

HOW DO I READ IT?

XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

I'm wondering what was up with the DL Carib cuts? Perhaps they filed an invalid equipment type? Are all those routes on the same type? Otherwise is it possible they really changed their minds? BMI-DTW was just added right? And is now gone. I guess things are changing that fast?

NAS has been B739 for a few yrs now since the the MD80'S were being retired....don't know with type will be used now post COVID

AA said it finalized its October schedule on August 29, so all those international flights (such as LHR-RDU/PHX/CLT/RDU, PHL-DUB/AMS, CLT-MUC) are still set to resume in late-October.

Sounds like they're optimistic for those U.S. airports to become approved gateways for European flights. If not, they'll likely make further changes closer to the resumption dates.

There are teams divided up in network planning at all the legacies. There used to be Atlantic, Pacific, Latin, and then domestic was usually divided up by hub or geography. I think with the layoffs a lot of those teams are now combined, but you can see which team completed a month in the schedule update because each team does an update separately unless they all happen to finish the same week.

The DL Carribean flying that was was showing as cut in last week's OAG thread and now back is flown with a mix of equipment types, depending on the route. Its mostly 738, 739, & 752, but its a variety of equipment types.

All the stuff still was loaded for sale, so it must've been some other mis-file reason.

I think PHL got the worst. It looks like most flights are only operating a little more than 1x per day.

It may have been reported here earlier but Bloomberg said that October capacity was down 55% y-o-y, even after the leisure adds. This should reflect that. 3Q down 60%; 2Q was down 76% in ASMs.

For AA the confirmed international cut is until September. October cuts are not barebone yet. Still have rooms available for cut.

WN always operates those routes from MKE. Now that fall is coming up WN adds those routes from MKE seasonally. Not a reaction to UA but standard WN adds for MKE.

The routes are year round at CMH but the frequency increases are nice to see after September’s brutal suspensions/reductions

I fly that route quite a bit to see family (I'm just not into 4.5 hours of Turnpike driving). Those flights tended to be packed with paxs going to South/Central America and the Caribbean. No surpise that route has been whacked. The last time I flew that route over July 4th weekend the return was on a 321, which was packed in both cabins

It's been 2 or 3 winters since AA's flown YYC-PHX, and of all the times to bring it back, they're doing it now. Interesting. I guess they're banking on both AC and WS not flying to PHX winter 2020-21. I checked equipment and it's on a Mesa CR9, so it's not a lot of extra capacity to bank on a few Alberta snowbirds making the trek down to their winter homes.

Also FWIW, now that AA have extended their schedule to late July 2021, they actually show YOW-PHL returning 2x daily on Piedmont ERJs as of 06APR21.

Per Crankfyflier, B6 went from planning to operate 37% of last year’s schedule in Sep to 28% of last year’s schedule. October is currently at 44% of last year’s schedule but that could obviously change.

Big bold move by AS going to 4x daily. This hasn’t happened since before the 2008 recession. Back then it was 4x 734, with sometimes a mix of 73G and before that, the M80. Now it’s 1x 320 and 3x 739 instead of downgrading it all to E75s during the winter. With DL recently adding this market AS is eager to keep DL out of yet another one of their routes.

This route is always very sporadic even though it was seasonal. DL always changes when it would start, when it would end, and how often it would go each day or even each week. Not too surprised this one is going.

Indeed. GUA and SAL are opening up their airports this month. SJO already opened but they’re being very strict with who gets in.

I know they were flown before, but these are increases from what they were selling last week and increases from last year.

This is actually the resumption of the ATL-LOS service in Sept. except the flight will have a “technical” intermediate stop in DSS. I believe this is because they are going to use the 763ER to LOS for now. Traditionally ATL-LOS has been served nonstop with the A332 but I am guessing they don’t want to have an oddball or two A332 flying around just for this service 3x weekly (just my guess). In any case ATL-DSS-LOS (DL248) has been loaded starting Sept 8 with the 763ER.

The DSS market continues to be served from JFK and is increasing to 3x weekly in Sept.

All the protesting A.netters did about AA dropping ROW in the "AA goes forward with suspending service to 15 small airports in October" thread paid off, ROW no longer on the hit list. Actually Roswell city officials get the credit for saving their service. SUX and JLN have also been sparred (JLN had no change in their schedule this go-around).

I'm not too surprised to see DL eliminate the SEA-BZN route. But I see DL is bringing back a couple of additional longer-haul, domestic routes like SEA-BNA and SEA-RDU.

I'm a little surprised that HU is bringing back SEA-PEK...but I thought there were flight restrictions between the US and PRC.

AA said it finalized its October schedule on August 29, so all those international flights (such as LHR-RDU/PHX/CLT/RDU, PHL-DUB/AMS, CLT-MUC) are still set to resume in late-October.

Sounds like they're optimistic for those U.S. airports to become approved gateways for European flights. If not, they'll likely make further changes closer to the resumption dates.


With the way AA is cutting PHL domestically, by the time the international flights resume, they'll be NOTHING to feed them!

These plus 9 others are set for suspension on Oct. 7.

Eniliria, can you try running the AA portion again? Its not showing the suspension of many of the 12 smaller cities plus the frequency of flights out of cities like ABQ are not agreeing with what was updated in AA.com on Aug. 29. Really appreciate it.

I think PHL got the worst. It looks like most flights are only operating a little more than 1x per day.


DCA feels almost like its going back to being a spoke.

You know that's not going to last long-term, though. As soon as D.C. travel starts picking back up, AA will protect their valuable DCA slots and re-add service. Given that DCA was one of their top 3 most profitable hubs pre-COVID, I don't see them pivoting away from it long term. It's not a connecting hub, though, so with O&D demand dropping due to COVID DCA took a bigger hit than the interior connecting hubs for the time being.
This is my signature until I think of a better one.

AA at ORD and PHL really takes a hit. Pretty clear AA wants to funnel Almost everything through CLT and DFW as AA has said before. Nice to see the PHX adds at least. And also nice to see FSD-CLT, it will capitalize on DL cutting FSD-ATL for southern and Florida flows.

ORD and PHL are quite expensive hubs if not running at capacity. Not surprised to see PHX and CLT with strong domestic positioning. Wouldn't be surprised to see PHL the last to grow since it would be still the experimental international routes hub.

Oh I know, I'm just a spolied hub flyer and not used connecting anymore. :)

Is it me or is the Air-Shuttle finally dead after a good 60 year run? This feels like another situation where Covid-19 is going to push out a relic of another time and accelerate the pattern already in motion.

DL is running both legs in Oct with 3 weekday turns and AA has 2 to BOS and 4 to DCA. The competitive advantage the Shuttles had over the train (faster travel time and hourly schedules) was already diminished and they seemed to be on their last legs anyways. We are now looking at a full six+ months with them gone and who knows when/if the regular commuting pattern between the three cities will restart.

Yeah, I feel like the only shuttle that has a good chance of returning on a semi-hourly frequence will be BOS-DCA and the quasi-shuttle/slot squat LGA-ORD. Acela is just better and easier if people return to work in the city centers. I guess that is the other big variable.

All the protesting A.netters did about AA dropping ROW in the "AA goes forward with suspending service to 15 small airports in October" thread paid off, ROW no longer on the hit list. Actually Roswell city officials get the credit for saving their service. SUX and JLN have also been sparred (JLN had no change in their schedule this go-around).

I don't think AA has removed any of those cities from their schedules. Am I wrong? I thought they "zeroed them out" for new sales.

It doesn't work like that. I don't have access to the live database. As I just said, I don't think they are deleted. I think they are zeroed out which is interesting.

It's been edging toward death since the Acela.

The Shuttles were introduced before the Security requirements that came with 9/11 and when Amtrak was running the MetroLiner train, which wasn't much of a step up over the Regional trains. From 1995 to 1997 I was working in NYC but going to grad school at the University of MD (long story) so I was up and down on the MetroLiner 2x a week. The only difference was that the MetroLiner has fewer stops and would not sell more tickets than actually seats. I remember at times Amtrak would be short of cars so would borrow trains from MARC (Maryland's commuter rail line).

Hasn't BOS-RDU on AA technically not even launched? I wonder if it even will if we ever come out of all this.

Can we say at this point that BOS-RDU is devolving from a strong route with diverse traffic to being basically VFR? To believe we at one point would've had five airlines on that route had NK not pulled out after AA announced their return.
