Ecuatoriana coming back

Thu Sep 03, 2020 10:03 pm

Seems investors have adopted the name of the company that ceased operations in 2006, for a new startup and applied for AOC from CNAC (National Council of Civil Aviation).
The airline, as reported, will initially launch service domestically and is looking at both prop and jet fleet types.
The eventual timing might be good with the closure of TAME.

Certainly not the most auspicious time to launch an airline, and particularly in such a small market with 2 major airlines (AV and LATAM) serving the domestic network. Good luck to them as memories from Ecuatoriana are not enough to guarantee success.
Keep calm and wash your hands.

The demise of TAME shows there is no need for a 3rd domestic carrier. If they want to waste their money, more power to them.

It’s probably now or never. Avianca and LATAM are bankrupt and the new Ecuatoriana might prove to be more trouble than its worth for one of the two existing carriers and they might decide to leave. LA closed Argentina and Avianca closed Peru, so it’s not outside the realm of possibility that one or both could close Ecuador and leave the new Ecuatoriana with more room to breathe.

I was thinking of this too. Maybe Avianca or LATAM (or both) are downsizing in Ecuador or planning on leaving all together. In this case there might be more room for Ecuatoriana. As another member here said, I hope they bring back their nice colorful livery. Meaning this one:

Would love an Ecuatoriana A350 or A220 complete withblack nose cone, but would settle for any type...something good has to come out of 2020 surely. :D

Well they still have a 727-200 in TUS. Just needs 3 JT8D's and some love.

It actually got moved a month or so ago. So the wheels work!

Ecuatoriana had some snazzy liveries for sure, but many of us retirees may remember their original livery which featured alternating blue & white diagonal stripes on the vertical stabilizers of their Lockheed L-188 Electras. Back in the Sixties & early Seventies, these large turboprops could be seen buzzing in & out of MIA. The stripes gave the aircraft a mysterious appearance . . . well, at least I thought so!

Some interesting news on their latest press release:

Branding will be launched on April 29th.
No AOC yet.
Will operate the Boeing 717-200 on the 'second phase of operations' with a 115 passengers configured on three classes of service.
Will operate the Dash 8-Q400 for domestic and some international flights, with a 78 passengers configuration on two classes of service.

Huh. Where are the 717 coming from?
Won't they be a bit expensive coming soon? Parts and such? It's a bit of an investment right now...

I'd imagine that with Delta and Volotea retiring their 717 fleets, there's quite a few on the market and probably at very, very attractive lease rates. Since this airline is probably unlikely to operate more than four or five 717, there's probably enough spare engines on the market to give them five years or so of green time before they transition to 737NGs or A320s.

Probably not the way I'd start an airline, but it's not entirely crazy.

Ironic that Ecuatoriana was best known for their colorful 707s and 720s, and now they choose a Boeing model number just in between.

Indeed it can be a smart move. I just hope they will use their colorful livery from the 80s. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Volotea has just retired their fleet so they could be available. And with flybe ceasing ops last year I imagine there’s plenty of Q400s sitting around somewhere.

717 is an interesting choice though, with Covid I imagine there’s plenty of narrow bodies that have been returned to lessor of a more mainstream type with better support.

Subbing F100's in for 717's in their mockup? How hard is it to paint the correct plane?

I do like the livery however.

Great livery, reminds me of PLUNA's CRJs.
717s aren't exactly hard to come by these days.

Not everyone is an avgeek.

Either way, the rest of the mockups shown on the launch by Ecuatoriana are 717s. Livery is good and colourful, but the hummingbird is too close to Speedbird. The placement of the logos seems inspired by Air Canada.

The DH8D makes sense for them. But the B712 isn’t a good idea since the last call for parts will likely be very soon. I would say the Embraer 190/195 instead, especially the former JetBlue, American (4 aren’t bound for Australia), Avianca, or Azul frames.

4-5 Dash 8s and 3-4 E190s sounds ideal.

The CEO said for sure Quito-Guayaquil 3X, plus flights to Cuenca, Loja,Manta..They are still working on their route network but he emphasized on regional connectivity a lot, thus the Q400s
