Atlas Air 767 Emergency Landing in HNL

Sun Sep 06, 2020 9:21 am

An Atlas Air 767-300 operating a military charter traveling from HNL to UAM (Andersen Air Force Base in Guam) made an emergency landing in HNL due to flames coming from one of the engines. Information is still coming in regarding the incident. Aircraft landed safely with no injuries to those onboard.

Looks like N649GT was the aircraft involved:

From the first link:

Witnesses say shortly after takeoff, they heard loud booms over downtown Honolulu and saw flashes of light coming from what looked like the plane’s engine as it flew over Oahu.

Unlike the other Atlas incidents recently, this appears to be a straightforward non-crew-induced issue that could have been caused by anything, including bird ingestion. FO sounds very young, and initially a little freaked, but that's meaningless.

Compressor stall, most likely. Looks like two flashes and loud booms outside, and they shut it down. In declaring an emergency, the crew characterized it as "engine failure". The twitter video is misleading because they loop the flashes over and over, making it seem like the pilots kept flying with the engine acting up like that, which they didn't. The folks in HNL looked up and videoed because the booms were loud on the ground.

Aircraft in question is N649GT. GE engines w/FADEC. 28 years old. Lots of previous operators (Initially Malev Hungarian, then China Southern, LAN Chile, Vision Airlines; at Atlas a little over 4 years).

FWIW, anyone who wants to listen to it, they stay with the Tower the whole time, so it's the 0630-0700 archive for PHNL tower on Sept 6, starting about halfway through for the takeoff clearance, then the emergency declaration right when Tower tells them to switch, which they then don't. The 0700-0730 archive has them flying around and landing, and some Tower conversations with ARFF. Giant 8585 heavy.

Shortly before landing, the crew advises Tower that they have "severe damage to the right engine", which Tower repeats to the ARFF on-scene chief. All very-professional.

One interesting thing after they land is that Chief 2 of ARFF cedes command to "Battalion 3" "because this is a military aircraft". Interesting protocol. Sounds like Batallion 3 is driving over from the Hickham side and isn't there until a while after the plane lands.

From the ground here it Waikiki there were a few bright flashes and it sounded like firework shells. I can only imagine how loud it was onboard.
