FAQ

SOURCE: OAG

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

I think we are really starting to see the post-CARES station closures as I suspected back in April. Unlike AA, most carriers are going to do this in the dark of the night highlighted only on a.net. I expect much more.

I have to assume this is an error or re-addition of a tech stop. They would have way too much egg on their face with DOT to suspend PVG after getting DOT to risk inflaming things further with China to get them back in.

That's likely, although PHL-MAD/LHR are still available from October 24 while AMS/DUB were switched to DFW for the winter.

If PHL doesn't receive funneling status soon, AA may gradually delay the resumption of PHL-MAD/LHR as well.

Yes, that is very likely the reason.

Yet, AA has flown PHL-AMS for cargo the past month and will increase to daily this week. AA will also restart PHL-DUB (3x weekly) cargo only flights this week.

IAG & PBG are reliant on Canadians crossing the border to avoid all the taxes on transborder travel; it makes sense that NK would suspend these markets until the Canadian government lifts the requirement for 14-day isolation or quarantine for returning Canadians.

I have to imagine they're seeing even more weakness in point-to-point routes which are virtually all vacation travel within a single day's drive.

They are not suspending PVG; it’s a continuation of their current practice of stopping at ICN for a crew change, hence why you see a corresponding increase in ICN-DTW and ICN-SEA service.

IMHO, more interesting than the October cuts (heavy by UA/AA/NK) are the November/December and beyond cuts.

UA leaving LAN and AZO in the schedule for October after cuts when everyone on here said they wouldn't be coming back.

Stations UA is cutting indef. starting OCT: HOB, MHT, ITH, much smaller list than AA.

UA may get held into HOB or maybe they will negotiate with 4B or AN to take over the station.

I have to assume this is an error or re-addition of a tech stop. They would have way too much egg on their face with DOT to suspend PVG after getting DOT to risk inflaming things further with China to get them back in.

They are not suspending PVG; it’s a continuation of their current practice of stopping at ICN for a crew change, hence why you see a corresponding increase in ICN-DTW and ICN-SEA service.

Wasn't it supposed to go daily? Why would they do a tech stop on a daily flight? Wasn't the issue crew not be stranded for many days?

Agreed. Post-CARES we are starting to see the new steady state.

Stations UA is cutting indef. starting OCT: HOB, MHT, ITH, much smaller list than AA.

UA may get held into HOB or maybe they will negotiate with 4B or AN to take over the station.

I'm not so sure this is a final list. I expect we will see a lot more stations go.

I believe they have always been aiming to resume PVG at daily from both DTW and SEA but are currently limited by China’s capacity caps which only allow 4x weekly each for DL and UA. DL chose to split their 4x weekly PVG by 2x to DTW and 2x to SEA while UA is putting all of their 4x weekly into the SFO gateway

Thanks, enilria, for all this hard work. Hard to take in everything each week!

I doubt AA will be flying LAX-SYD anytime soon. SYD is currently capped at 350 international arrivals a day and the restrictions on international travel are very strict.

AA's already operating daily cargo-only LAX-SYD flights on the 777-300ER. Might as well add some passenger revenue to the flight despite the cap.

That makes sense to me. Isn't UA doing something similar to LAX and SFO from SYD?

Interesting they would reduce that
*DL CUN-MSP JAN 3>1.2[1.8] FEB 3>1.0[3] MAR 3>1.0[3]

It is interesting, but now it's also $2,000 RT for Main Cabin in March (on Saturday). Sad.

Not a UA flier by any means but, IMHO, smart to bring this back. DL has my loyalty but since they haven't resumed MSP yet, and haven't connected us to SLC for roughly 10 years now, they're making it a bit of a pain to get out west.

Airlineroute seems to concur with that theory of adding pax revenue.

Looks like a daily freq increase on DTW-CUN as a slight offset. Pushing connections through Detroit instead?

It's way too early to buy international travel for March - for more than a few reasons. But, anyone feeling compelled to buy MSP-CUN, Sun Country will do it for less.

UA still has HOB-IAH, not leaving HOB. HOB-DEN was a second route for HOB that just started less than a year ago, good to see that there is some light somewhere in the tunnel as HOB-DEN is showing a return in Feb. [0.6]

These are all misfiles for Advanced Air. They are having a schedule change in October but these three routes are still operating. I don't think the Boutique Air (4B) changes are showing correctly either.

I think it is probably a misfile but at the same time the stop at ICN is a tech stop. DL's PVG flights operate with a different flight number than their ICN flights there are no passengers disembarking boarding their PVG flights at ICN. I don't see DL suspending SEA/DTW-PVG they along with UA fought to hard to have those flights reinstated. However, LAX-PVG probably won't happen any time soon on either carrier because for now both DL and UA can only operate 4x weekly flights to China. And now with China requiring all US citizens to present a negative COVID test prior to boarding their outbound flight to China I'm going to go out on a limb and say it will be a while before any US carrier seeks to add additional frequencies to China.

If you're married to DL flying, it can be had on DL in Business during that timeframe for $1,200 RT ($1,500 if you don't want overnight) fwiw.
If you can stomach Sun Country, that starts at $372 RT, AA at $428 RT and UA around $550 RT.

IAG & PBG are reliant on Canadians crossing the border to avoid all the taxes on transborder travel; it makes sense that NK would suspend these markets until the Canadian government lifts the requirement for 14-day isolation or quarantine for returning Canadians.

Exactly. 80% of the pax on those flights are us Canadians. I expect IAG and PBG are suspensions as opposed to complete market withdrawals. The border restrictions are probably going to extend well into 2021 at the earliest.

Case in point for PD as this didn't make the OAG report in time: Porter have just announced they're now extending their full network suspension to November 12th.
https://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/p ... 02108.html

On the flip side, UA are showing 0.6 for YOW-IAD in October. Given this appears to be their October adjustments, it appears this will be YOW's first transborder ops for the first time since mid-June.

Thanks enilria as usual.

For all the ridicule with BER's delays and now the place would be over capacity from day 1, now thanks to the delays/gong show, ironically BER will open way, way under capacity.

UA took a butcher knife to the October schedule this weekend. EWR was really diced. 4x a day EWR-LAX! 4x a day EWR-IAH, and 2x a day to LAS. That's limping the hub along.
It kinda makes me mad that they have a full compliment of flights for sale in November ( 12/day EWR-LAX), but will likely cut those back in 4 weeks. They have no intention of running the full schedule, yet it is loaded and for sale, until it isn't anymore.

I believe for some reason the OAG made EWR look a lot worse than what it’s actually planned to be. As of now EWR should have about 170 flights on peak days in October.

It is interesting, but now it's also $2,000 RT for Main Cabin in March (on Saturday). Sad.

It's way too early to buy international travel for March - for more than a few reasons. But, anyone feeling compelled to buy MSP-CUN, Sun Country will do it for less.

Not sure I'd say it's way too early. I've bought Cancun out of MSP, six months out. It's spring break and we travel well for it. When I've bought, it's almost never gone down in price either.

I didn't realize the limit is airline specific. I thought route specific. Are the Chinese carriers also limited on an airline basis?

Sorry didn’t mean to imply that China set the capacity cap for specific US airlines. Earlier this summer, China first allowed the US side only 4 weekly flights in total; UA and DL were the only two which expressed an interest to restart China flights so the DOT divided it equally between the two. Later in August, China allowed this to double to 8 weekly flights....again, since the only two candidates were UA and DL, each one then got a total of 4x weekly flights (2 new weekly flights in addition to the 2x weekly from the first round). The Chinese carriers are now limited to 8x weekly flights as well; the Chinese government decided how to allocate those limited weekly flights across the Chinese carriers.

That's one weird route.

Given all of the big money movement into the Nashville area by people fleeing from both coasts over the last 4 years, it is not that weird....

They are not suspending PVG; it’s a continuation of their current practice of stopping at ICN for a crew change, hence why you see a corresponding increase in ICN-DTW and ICN-SEA service.

Sorry if I wasn’t clear...When I said the “corresponding increase in ICN-DTW and ICN-SEA”, I was referring to what is showing in the OAG changes above. It isn’t actually new capacity that can be booked for the local ICN-DTW or ICN-SEA segments, since as you said, the ICN stop is purely a tech stop on these two routes.

DL actually had me worried because originally this was bookable only for October. Glad to see it's not seasonal or just a one off thing now. AS definitely responded already, and it was needed, because AS usually downgrades this from 3 737s to 2 E75s during winter, which is too small. Good luck to both, and for once something is growing in the IE.

Sad to see how much UA is cutting SFO next month. Don't know numbers wise if this is more or less than any other hubs as far as flights flown or seats offered for the month especially since it relies a lot on Asia, but they're making SFO a hard hub to use for domestic west coast stuff, especially their (once) large CR2 operation.

Yes, they're leaning on DEN a lot more for West to West flows since it also works for East-West which SFO doesn't.

It's probably about the same as what they are flying right now, maybe more. It just looks bad as it is a cut from the previously published full flight schedule.

Yes that's right, 350 international passengers per day since 14-day hotel quarantine is mandatory. Thanks, that makes a lot more sense. Even 350 flights/week / 2 = 175 inboud = 25 / day, which in this environment would be ridiculous.

Glad to see DL after pulling out last summer (2019), they've quickly come back since many in the Salvadoran community in the LA area weren't keen with Avianca or Q6 since their service is lackluster and that's been charitable.

Knowing that UA is also starting their LAX -SAL flights lets see who wins this battle.

Not sure if this is a filing error, but AA is showing daily for PHL through April. Seems quite off-brand at the moment if AA is reducing winter Florida service from the northeast.

Interesting they would reduce that

LAXCUN has always been a difficult market; many have tried it, most have done poorly. The yields aren't great, and most west coast travelers go to either Hawaii or SJD/PVR/MZT. CUN is generally a big draw for the east coast/midwest.
