This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

HOW DO I READ IT?

XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I am noticing some increased love for RNO over the last month or so and the new LAX service on AA is yet another example. Nothing much reflected this year, but 2021 could be big for the airport.

Also noted from the report... is Boutique (4B) pulling out of MCE completely? Maybe that's where the equipment for PSP is coming from...

I saw that. EYW is seeing a lot of refugees from lockdown. I saw SUN seems to be going the other way. The politics in SUN are probably different on tourists.

Thanks for the update as always Enilria!

Interesting to see DL make a “schedule reduction” at PVD (and not total drop). In previous weeks/months, DL basically had the PreCovid schedule as a placeholder for PVD flights, and would then drop all flights as the date approached. The fact that this time they are simply reducing flights, as opposed to dropping them altogether suggests that DL will finally be resuming service to Rhode Island (2x daily to DTW, 1x daily to ATL). Good to see, if the assumption is correct.

I think it's an error, they cut all non-hub Wednesday flying from ORD except SEA (similar to PHL & MIA), and I'm assuming that messed up the data.

That’s what I thought too but I did a bunch of dummy bookings and they have Generally 2x daily to all those places minus Tuesday and Wednesday. Not sure which is correct but maybe it’s messing with these numbers?

RNO occasionally picks up added flights as the winter approaches and the ski resorts open. Seems that some carriers are betting on the resorts being able to open with lessened Covid-19 restrictions and being outside in the fresh air decreases the risk of virus transmission per some sources.

Air India is closing IAD?



I would expect ORD & IAD to be filed at some point in the future. Especially Chicago, I cannot see AI walking away from.


Or perhaps they are ceding the ORD route to UA?

I dont think most of the 4B changes are correct, showing several other markets down to 0 as well (ABQ-CNM, CDR/CEZ-DEN). These markets, as well as MCE, are all EAS, shouldn't be changing without a replacement. LAX-PSP-PHX is odd although it does link the PHX and LAX operations. Wish 4B would link up some of there other holes like between ABQ and DEN.

AA ABQ-LAX NOV 1.6>2[3] JAN 3>2[3]

I don't think the AA flights are showing correctly either. I've noticed the past several weeks that the markets I regularly follow are not agreeing with AA.com like, for example, ABQ-LAX above. AA.com has always, and still shows 3 flights for Nov., I have no idea how they came up with 1.6>2, and Jan. is still showing 3 all month. AA currently is not running ABQ-LAX and has not done their Nov. final schedule yet, I'm expecting ABQ-LAX to stay at 0, maybe 1.0 with some luck. So I wouldn't believe many, if any of the Nov. AA changes in this report, something with the OAG isn't running right. Enilria, I know its not your fault, we all really appreciate what you do!!!

I think it's an error, they cut all non-hub Wednesday flying from ORD except SEA (similar to PHL & MIA), and I'm assuming that messed up the data.


Agree with this. That must have messed up the numbers because STL is listed at .8 and it actually is 2.6

Is it possible that they have simply not filed S21 properly? DEL-ORD, BOM-EWR and DEL-JFK are all showing 0 flights Apr '21 onwards. Are we reading too much into this given UA's route announcement or am I not reading this correctly? I find it strange that they would cut these 3 all at once.

AA PHL-SRQ JAN 1.0>0.4[0.6]

In last week's OAG, PHL-SRQ was showing as cut back for Nov/Dec, just like it is this week for Jan. It is still currently bookable as daily Nov 1 onward. So strange.

I wouldn't say AA is shutting down ORD, it is more like they are right sizing it to fit COVID demand.

Keep in mind after COVID hit and UA took down our entire schedule and AA became the largest operator at ORD. AA hasn't been the largest operator at ORD for years but back in April of this year they were operating more flights, had more capacity than UA. AA as some point had to come to the realization that they have too much capacity in the Chicagoland market.

With the summer travel season behind us now is the time for airlines to start flying a more realistic and less optimistic domestic schedule especially if they want to keep their burn rates headed in the right direction.

I still believe the darkest days this industry will face are head of us, meaning January through early March of 2021, when leisure travel historically is at it lowest point. Historically in the month of October until a week or two before Thanksgiving leisure traffic falls off domestically. Even if there is a viable vaccine January and February 2021 will not be pretty if there is no uptick in leisure domestic traffic during the 2020 holiday season Q4 2020 will not be pretty. Depending on how things pan out in the leisure markets airlines could be in for a very long dark period (October through early March) where excess capacity will do more harm than good. I will be keeping my eye on the TSA numbers to see if how much of a drop in daily passenger screenings there could be as we head into the fall season verses the summer season.

Airlines have to remain vigilant and make sure they keep their burn rates on a downward trajectory.

These look like the Pacific and Long Haul SA cuts. What has been zeroed out on the Europe end of things this winter? And what intl routes besides ORD-DEL are they planning to operate this winter aside from what is operating now?

IAH comes out soared in cuts sans SYD which is totally understandable.

IAH, we never get much but we don’t lose much either. In this day I consider that a victory.

I have no idea, but I don't think cuts after MAR would be real. They would cut it now if it were going away.

I think the carriers are filing lots of schedule changes versus once per week in the past and that increases the chance that the schedule update catches them in the middle of the process. Typically they delete overlapping flights and then add the new flights. It is supposed to happen without much of a gap, but I would guess we are seeing snapshots in between the deletes and the adds sometimes.

Statistically, not a chance. They are just a throwing out a schedule to see what sticks. There’s no chance they fly all of this. Even with prices at zero, demand would still be subdued.
