2020 College Football Charter Thread

Wed Sep 23, 2020 6:24 am

Hello CFB charter trackers!

It's been a very crazy year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but regardless, there is a college football season for most conferences; if there is another CFB charter thread open, delete this one; since I couldn't find any CFB charter thread open in this forum, I'll do the honors and post my first one:

Alabama chartering a DL B752 to COU (Mizzou):

SEC Charters in addition to AL already mentioned:
Kentucky chartering a DL B752 to MGM for Auburn this weekend: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL ... /KLEX/KMGM
Georgia taking two DL B712 to XNA for Arkansas: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL ... /KAHN/KXNA, https://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL ... /KAHN/KXNA
Vandy going into IAH on a DL752 to play Texas A&M, looks like the aircraft will ferry to CLL to pick up the Commodores postgame: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL ... /KBNA/KIAH
Tenn. using a DL752 to head to CAE: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL ... /KTYS/KCAE

They sure file these flight plans early now, 3 or 4 days ahead for some. Never seen that before.

I believe UGA was using two MadDogs in the past. Nice to see them transition to the 717 charter while it's still around.

I remember when they would use 3 or 4 CRJ-200's.

I see that now, postponed until Dec 12.

Usually dominated by the commercial airlines, don't know how this year will shake out but would think much of the same.

I can't see the competition for the flights any greater this year. There are less games, and more teams playing games closer to their campus making a flight not necessary.

Plus it's not like airlines can't spare the extra frame for 24-36 hours.

Never the Mad dogs. They went from CRJ's to 717's when delta received them. It is all based on runway length at AHN.

That’s right. It was Florida that was using MD88s now that I recall. Definitely for basketball and maybe for football? Not sure

UF has never used MD-88s on a regular occasion. They usually use a DL CRJ for basketball (yikes for the players!) and formally used AA (generally a 738 or 321) for football until last season when they made the switch over to DL.

Speaking of UF, looks like they are taking a DL 739 into TUP for their game against Ole Miss this weekend.

They were using MD88 for basketball last season, which is what I recalled. I didn't know the length of that usage and if they had used it for other sports

Mizzou, as always for the past couple of years, will be utilizing SCX B738s for most of their road games this season; this example is for an away game at Tennessee:

Mizzou was supposed to hit the road for an LSU game this Saturday, but is now hosting LSU due to Hurricane Delta impacting Baton Rouge this weekend; LSU will be chartering a DL A321 to COU (ironically a coincidental post of "Delta" by name of both the airline and this hurricane):

No flight showing up for FAU this weekend yet, but funny enough, they'll be flying KPBI to KPIB, presuming they do fly. Quite similar airport codes

Found a few more. Should know much more tomorrow and Friday:
Alabama flying into MEM to play Ole Miss, unless things change due to Hurricane, on a Delta 752, per usual (interesting to see them use MEM instead of TUP, guess it's easier for DL to store a 752 for a day at MEM, might ferry postgame to pick them up at TUP though): https://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL ... /KTCL/KMEM
Miami going to GSP for Clemson on a DL 739: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL ... /KMIA/KGSP
Kansas St going into FTW to play TCU on UA (presume 739): https://flightaware.com/live/flight/UAL ... /KMHK/KFTW
Pitt will be using a DL 764 to go to BOS for Boston College (first time I think we've seen a 764 charter this season for college!): https://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL ... /KPIT/KBOS

At about 3 hrs why would Alabama fly? I would think it would be easier to take busses for a trip that short.

I agree. I do feel like they have bussed to Oxford in the past as well. Especially considering when MEM is an hour away from Oxford, ultimately, flying ends up taking longer probably. I guess when you have the booster money and all like they do, they fly whenever.

Was reading about their schedule last night, they're only playing a four game nonconference schedule this fall with the Big South having cancelled. Pretty interesting. Nice to see something other than general aviation or Boutique pop into MSL, after DL connection left a few years back

Louisville en route to ATL on Sun Country for Georgia Tech tomorrow: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/SCX ... /KSDF/KATL
That Sun Country plane will then ferry ATL-MLU, presumably to pick up UL Monroe to take them to Liberty: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/SCX ... /KATL/KMLU
Gators will be taking a DL752 to Texas A&M, flew a 739 earlier this season. Not showing if they'll fly into CLL or a Houston area airport yet: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL ... /KATL/KGNV
Texas Tech on a UA739 up to Iowa State: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/UAL ... /KLBB/KDSM
Arkansas will take a UA739 to MGM for Auburn (only showing up as UA2547 for the ferry up to XNA at the moment, flight to MGM will have a different flight #): https://flightaware.com/live/flight/UAL ... /KIAH/KXNA

Duke headed to Syracuse on a DL321: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL ... /KRDU/KSYR
Tennessee will be taking two 712s to AHN for Georgia (only showing some of the ferries on either end of the trip at the moment) as DL8907 and DL8909: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL8907

So an update on Tennessee, looks like they'll bus to Athens, but they'll fly back on those Delta flights. Found that relatively odd

A way to cut costs i guess and bus one way then fly back avoiding the need for hotel rooms on the road maybe

This will happen occasionally. They have more time to get there but after the game, they want to get home. I know Miss State playing at LSU has done this before, coach said a few years back it gave them a chance to have a team meal together along the way and was a good bonding experience. But after the game, no time for another long bus ride so they fly.

So an update on Tennessee, looks like they'll bus to Athens, but they'll fly back on those Delta flights. Found that relatively odd

This will happen occasionally. They have more time to get there but after the game, they want to get home. I know Miss State playing at LSU has done this before, coach said a few years back it gave them a chance to have a team meal together along the way and was a good bonding experience. But after the game, no time for another long bus ride so they fly.

Alabama did the opposite tonight it seems like and did not have a flight filed back to TCL or BHM. Interesting move. I’m sure the cost of two 712 charters, which is a necessity for AHN, is more expensive than one 752 or 739, so makes sense to take buses for one leg of the trip

Just got word that the Vandy at Mizzou homecoming game is postponed until 12/12 due to COVID and the fact that Vandy doesn't have enough players for the road game to Mizzou, so no chartering updates to or from COU for this weekend; hope Mizzou is still on the road for the Florida game next weekend! MIZ!

Should be a very busy weekend, lots of games where the away team will not be within driving distance of the home team:
Coastal Carolina going into New Orleans instead of LFT to play Lafayette tonight on Sun Country: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/SCX ... /KMYR/KMSY
Georgia State will use iAero (formerly Swift) to fly into MEM for Arkansas State (believe this is their first flight of the season and the first iAero football charter I've seen this year: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/SWQ ... /KATL/KMEM
BYU will fly on DL A321 to play Houston, flying into Hobby: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL ... /KPVU/KHOU
Pitt back on a DL B764 to head to FLL for Miami: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL ... /KPIT/KFLL
Auburn will fly out of Columbus on a DL B738 for their first flight of the year to SC: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL ... /KCSG/KCAE
Kansas flying on a DL752 as usual up to West Virginia: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL ... /KFOE/KCKB
Texas A&M will fly into GTR on presumably a UA 739 to face Mike Leach and crew: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/UAL ... /KCLL/KGTR
Georgia will fly into BHM to face Alabama on two 712s as usual: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL ... /KAHN/KBHM

Does AHN have any plans to expand their runway to accept larger planes in the near future? With DL and the 712's tenure ending in the near future, it should be considered. Or could the A220 could fill that spot?

I believe that the A220 could once they accumulate more but could be wrong. Otherwise they’ll be using CRJs or flying out of ATL. They added about 600 feet if I recall a few years back, and I don’t think they’re able to extend it any more.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but didn't LSU charter with UA previously?

On a separate note, are these charters usually done by commercial airlines or the charter airlines. I imagine the competition for these flights is much more fierce this year.

I see that now, postponed until Dec 12.

Usually dominated by the commercial airlines, don't know how this year will shake out but would think much of the same.

Most of your Power Five schools will go with DL or UA (AA and WN had a couple in the past as well), but most of the smaller FBS schools (Group of Five schools) will use G4, Swift or WN.

DL pretty much has most of the ACC/SEC schools while UA grabs most of the Big 10 (save for Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota and Wisconsin off the top of my head), Big 12 (Kansas and TCU are the two outliers here) and Pac 12 schools (though I think AS flies one or both of Washington/Washington State).

Lots of the smaller schools use SY as well. Some power five that use SY. Haven't seen much Swift this year, but I recall they do much more college basketball charters. Lots of G4 around C-USA, MAC, Sun Belt, etc. There's a few other random airlines that you'll see fly like one or two teams every now and then too (World Atlantic with their Mad Dog, National with a 757).

I forgot about SY, so point well taken. Swift usually gets a lot of the post-season charters in football (among all divisions) and basketball.

Now this is interesting, Auburn's flight out of CSG today on a DL 738 to CAE is showing as canceled on FR24. A Swift Air B738 flew into MGM last night after dropping off Georgia State postgame last night in Atlanta. Presumably, this will take Auburn to South Carolina instead. Very strange last minute swap
