Neos Italy looks to acquire 787s from Norwegian

Mon Oct 12, 2020 9:24 pm

Neos is reported close to an agreement with Norwegian Air for the acquisition of two Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners currently stored in Oslo.

Neos owner Alpitour Group seeks to be ready for expansion opportunity, and says the 787s offers "cutting-edge technical capabilities that reduce emissions, as well as offering exceptional flight experiences both from the point of view of comfort and of well-being notch inflight services and an unrivaled on-board entertainment offer."

If finalized the 2 frames would join Neos current 3 787s and be based out of Milan Malpensa.

I suppose these will replace their 763s which are probably done at this point with one going to 5Y and another in indefinite storage since March. Though it is quite a bigger plane, the fuel efficiency and increased range should make up for that. I suppose Neos has some ability to control their demand as a leisure operator too, so they can find ways to fill those extra seats.

AirwaysMag reports the 763s were returned to lessors so yes. (https://airwaysmag.com/airlines/neos-ai ... egian-air/)

Also reports LN-LNX (Carl von Linné tailfin) and LN-LNT (UNICEF tailfin) are the 789s in question.

Yes, this will become an important note in any transaction, involving Norwegian. Leasing company ABCD, through its partly-owned subsidiary Norwegian, has performed an XYZ transaction. Just so that the folks keep in mind, what forces are in play.

The ownership shouldn't be large enough to be defined as partly owned? Probably just falls under the "financial investment" category

Aercap has a ~16% stake in DY and is their largest shareholder.

Indeed! If you also count in Bank of China, Avolon, etc., lessors own apparently majority of Norwegian's shares.
While each lessor obviously sees other lessors as competitors, I think they see wisdom in keeping Norwegian as a "shared vessel" for managing aircraft pool, pursuing claims against OEM's, and other tasks, where their interests do not necessarily match, but are not in antagonism to each other.

Norwegian, as it existed pre-pandemic, isn't coming back. More of the 787 fleet will be parceled out to other operators.

Given that the B767 being replaced first flew in 1995/1996 are they candidates for cargo conversion?.

Not surprising. A lot of their bread and butter were cheap flights between the US and Europe. With current COVID restrictions we won't see any start of the rebound for another 6 to 8 moths easily, maybe longer depending on how the 2nd wave fares in Europe and how the U.S. can finally get this under control.

Engine problems with Norwegian 787's resolved?

Why would Neos take on an aircraft with known issues?

Quite good candidates in fact as they have GE engines.
