FAQ

SOURCE: OAG

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

It looks like the AA PHL "adds" in November were partly pulled back down to September/October levels. There were also some curious additions in December that I anticipate to come back down.

There's been a lot of talk about AA being inaccurate. I spot checked a few.
AA ORD-PIT NOV 0.9>1.2[5]
This is correct. People are picking random days and saying there are two flights, but it averages 1.2 over the month because there are whole days with no flights at all around the Holiday.
AA ORD-RIC NOV 0.4>0.7[4]
This is correct. There's 1 flight on most days, but zero around the holidays.
AA CLE-ORD NOV 1.0>1.6[5]
There are whole days with zero, but it appears that this E145 flight, for example, does not make it through to me.

Chicago, IL to Cleveland, OH
Saturday, November 21, 2020
1:30 PM 3:49 PM
AA 3408 ER4-Embraer ERJ-145
Operated by Envoy Air As American Eagle

Possibilities are that the equipment code filed gets filtered for validity before it makes it to me or the flight is filed as a duplicate meaning that Envoy is the primary marketer (which we know isn't really the case). One of those things appear to be happening. I'm assuming it is just Envoy E145s impacted.

I'm surprised at all the Florida/Caribbean cuts by B6. I thought those destinations were points of relative strength in an otherwise weak environment. JFK-KIN is surprising as it has been implied that VFR traffic has been strong. By comparison, DL has maintained its daily ATL-KIN and AA is back up to 3x daily on its MIA-KIN so maybe there is demand there but not from NYC (which seems weird as it's the largest VFR market). The start date for JFK-GEO also seems to keep getting pushed further and further back. I'm starting to wonder if this will start at all. BW has restarted its JFK-GEO ops as of yesterday and AA is set to resume in December. In a weakened market, maybe it's just not worth trying.

There are a lot of oddities with the Caribbean. Is it possible that people are buying tickets, but then close in they realize that there is some restriction in place and they cancel? I met somebody who was going to MBJ and got to the airport in ATL before being told they needed a negative COVID test within 48 hours to enter. They rebooked for a vacation to CUN on a flight one hour later. Those sorts of last second changes of an entire trip never used to happen before...except for non-revs.

I was surprised how many stations B6 has closed for DEC.

I think a lot of airlines are just trolling for bookings. They are selling schedules for 60 days out that they don't have enough planes or crew to even fly any more. The DOT is going to crack down on this soon I suspect. Beyond that, airlines are adding flights when they see a hint of customer interest, grabbing bookings, and then cancelling down to the original or less capacity 2 weeks out. It's mega-bait-and-switch.

I'm not sure on the Bahamas and T&C but for Jamaica, entry requirements have been fairly consistent since its reopening in June. A negative test within the last ten days: https://www.visitjamaica.com/travelauthorization/

They also perform location monitoring of arrivals while on island. This also hasn't changed since June. Jamaica has actually seen a marked increase overall of airlift into both KIN and MBJ over the last few months which makes the cuts noted above all the more surprising.

Re STT, which you asked about, I don't know of any additional restrictions put in place. In fact, I believe the opposite is happening with restaurants now allowed to resume indoor dining up to 50% and other restrictions being rolled back.

EK may not return to SEA? This makes me sad...although their mileage redemption levels with AS's 'Mileage Plan' were outrageous.

Surprised how little love AUS got with this one. SAN had some pretty positive changes.

Surprised how little love AUS got with this one. SAN had some pretty positive changes.

SAN is a domestic US vacation destination that will continue to have nice weather in winter. There's your answer.

Boutique (4B) shows LAX-PSP dropping completely in DEC. but the website shows an increase to 2 RT's per day.

Maybe QR will replace EK on the SEA-Middle-East routes...or even Turkish.

As I mentioned in another response, maybe QR will replace EK on the SEA-Middle-East route. But somehow I think EK will return eventually.

The only conclusion that you can draw from these are that demand from the Northeast is weak to non-existent, while the Midwest and Southeast Demand continues to grow, if slowly.

HTS was on the original list of airports to be discontinued. This weekly update also shows CLT-IPT zeroed out in November; IPT was another on the hit list.

Quite surprised regarding UA with ABE-IAD. They used to serve this route for years before the CO merger, and then I believe a few years after.

I'm guessing the following overseas airlines will NOT return to SEA post-pandemic:

EK
EI
SQ
Norwegian
NH
CX
Condor

Seattle has turned into such a crap-hole that no one in their right mind would want to come back or come visit.

Why are people saying EK is pulling out of SEA without properly reading the schedule..it says 0.1 in March which indicates they have only pulled it for the winter season. Both SEA-DXB and EWR-ATH-DXB are on sale for the S21 season starting March 28, 2021. Of course that can still change later if borders remain closed etc but for now, they have been dropped for the winter season only.

AA 3408 ER4-Embraer ERJ-145
Operated by Envoy Air As American Eagle

Possibilities are that the equipment code filed gets filtered for validity before it makes it to me or the flight is filed as a duplicate meaning that Envoy is the primary marketer (which we know isn't really the case). One of those things appear to be happening. I'm assuming it is just Envoy E145s impacted.

Many are correct like the twelve Eagle markets that were discontinued thru Nov 3 have now been cut thru Dec 1. (DFW-DRT/LCH/SPI, ORD-DBQ/AZO, CLT-FLO/PGV/HTS/HVN/IPT, and PHL-SWF all showing 0 for NOV) with the exception of DFW-SWO which will continue.

I did check DFW-ELP which shows NOV 4>5[7], AA.com shows this market with 6 flights Mon-Thur and 7 on Fr/Sa/Su. It showed the same last week, I dont see any changes made. Still trying to solve the mystery. I'm wondering if some of the other changes the report shows for this week are actually corrections from what was previously shown?

IBC got scheduled authority a few years ago and tried to fly to the Bahamas and compete with Silver (which, honestly, shouldn't take much). They even bought a building on the N side of FLL off of SW 34th street as a passenger terminal (no parking for passengers). It didn't work out and they went back to squarely charter only for passenger service.

All the other markets show a return on Dec. 2 in AA.com but don't hold your breath, looks like AA does want to keep them.

Sadly, this is spot on. SEA seemed to have some really strong momentum going into 2020 - but with COVID + riots it's become one of the least desirable places in the US (along with Portland). It's going to take years for SEA to rebound if it even does.

Doubtful. If you look at the DOT Data, SEA was continually one of EK's high LF routes in the US. EK survived heavily off of the connections from Western Canada. On any given day about 50% of the load on the aircraft was filled with connections from YVR/YYC/YEG etc. Right now with the 14-day quarantine in place for returning travellers to Canada and the near impossibility to get a Covid test for travel in Western Canada to fly EK, there's very little point in resuming services right now. Also in the pre-covid world, EK was forced by the airport authority to alter timings of EK241/242 (YYZ) that made connecting from Western Canada impossible or hugely inconvenient. 241/242 are back to the flight's inaugural timings that allow for better connections right now.

Step away from the Fox News portrayal of Seattle. The tourism market will suffer due to the implosion of the cruise industry but the economy is not slowing down, tech especially.

Of your list Norwegian and Condor will be lucky to be flying anywhere next year, CX and SQ had shaky business cases for SEA even before COVID. IAG would be smart to pull EI out in favor of maximizing BA’s one world connection to AS.

UA is definitely scrounging for leisure traffic wherever they can find it, but nice to see a new route.

UA flew this before for a few years back in the 2010-13 timeframe. Once AA added DCA-PNS, UA quickly bailed. It'll be interesting to see if the two routes can live in parallel. I suspect UA might extend this beyond March as the high season for PNS is really after March. I do wish they would use a better plan than a CRJ-200, but I guess beggars can't be choosers.

Lot of other IAD love in this update. Not sure how well ERI/ABE will do...no O&D, but might feed some leisure passengers into Florida. Granted, ERI is a SCASD grant so low risk for UA.

Lol right? I live in Seattle, this dramatic portrayal as a "crap-hole" with "riots" is wholly inaccurate.

In case anyone was confused like me, this is IBC Airways, a cargo airline based out of FLL. Not sure why they're showing up here. I thought this was only passenger flights? Are they trying to launch those? I'm curious if anyone knows.

Not sure why a cargo airline would even file in OAG. Hmm...

Is AA pulling out of HTS?

A number of AA stations appear to lose all flights in November. I know some of them are accurate fro media coverage. I'd consult their website and report back on HTS.

It looks like the AA PHL "adds" in November were partly pulled back down to September/October levels. There were also some curious additions in December that I anticipate to come back down.

Interesting. Why aren't people going to STT?

Why are people saying EK is pulling out of SEA without properly reading the schedule..it says 0.1 in March which indicates they have only pulled it for the winter season. Both SEA-DXB and EWR-ATH-DXB are on sale for the S21 season starting March 28, 2021. Of course that can still change later if borders remain closed etc but for now, they have been dropped for the winter season only.

It's on a rolling cancel. That's why I said "suspended". I think they intend to come back, but I don't think that's automatic.

Judging from Cuomo's admonishing NY/CT/NJ residents for traveling today more flights will move to IAD.

Boutique frequencies are not showing correctly either. I checked the first market, ALS-DEN, which shows 1.3 down to .4 in Nov, down to 0 in Dec. however their website continues to show 4 per day which is what they've been doing and are required to do under EAS.

There were 12 Eagle cities (including HTS) that were suspended on Oct. 7 when the airlines didn't get another stimulus. At first they were only suspended thru Nov 3 but now they are zeroed out thru Dec.1. They all show back in AA.com eff. Dec 2, keep your fingers crossed!

AA BHM-DFW NOV 1.3>3[5] DEC 4>5[5] JAN 5>6[5]

I spot checked this one. I think that the issue is with Envoy. This route is at least 4x every single day through month of November, sometimes 4x sometimes 5x, except for Thanksgiving day and the day after (1x and 3x respectively). Looks like 1-2 of these daily ones are with Envoy E-175s, and the rest are PSA and Mesa CRJs. So, I think that the issue is with Envoy as a whole.

Seattle has turned into such a crap-hole that no one in their right mind would want to come back or come visit.

We are seeing now how over saturated Seattle really was just like Boston. Those two markets had been punching over their weight for a while now and those markets are now being rightsized more to the demand. Airlines can no longer give away seats just to say hey we are serving the latest cool market. I actually think Condor will be back

I think ANA will be back too as Seattle-Japan is too big of a market for Star Alliance to have no service on.

In case anyone was confused like me, this is IBC Airways, a cargo airline based out of FLL. Not sure why they're showing up here. I thought this was only passenger flights? Are they trying to launch those? I'm curious if anyone knows.

Thanks for the explanation. Does this mean they're giving scheduled service another try or is this a random charter showing up?

Step away from the Fox News portrayal of Seattle. The tourism market will suffer due to the implosion of the cruise industry but the economy is not slowing down, tech especially.

Of your list Norwegian and Condor will be lucky to be flying anywhere next year, CX and SQ had shaky business cases for SEA even before COVID. IAG would be smart to pull EI out in favor of maximizing BA’s one world connection to AS.

I'm going to second that you need to step away from the media about Seattle/Portland and the protest/riots. I live in Seattle and close to some of the violent riots. Seattle is really not that bad. The problem at the moment is the pandemic is taking long than anyone likes. The downtown area is still sad because there is so much less tourism and so few people are going into downtown to work with all the work from.

Thank you all for your feedback regarding my post about overseas airlines NOT coming back to SEA. It's good to hear some realism as opposed to the sensationalism provided by the media (not just Fox). If some are not coming back, would that provide opportunities for others?

I really hope this whole political strife at SEA (and Portland) eventually settles down and we can get back to real life, including fighting bad rush-hour traffic.

It's all media sensationalism. Unless the tech companies in Seattle all make work from home a permanent thing, I don't see why people that work in these companies will permanently leave the area. And if they don't leave, then why would the international airlines not come back to Seattle? The air demand in PNW has certainly comeback a lot faster than Northeast. I don't think there is any real evidence why demand would not come back in 3 to 5 years.

Lol right? I live in Seattle, this dramatic portrayal as a "crap-hole" with "riots" is wholly inaccurate.

I was there in mid August and didn't feel unsafe at all. Seattle continues to be one of my favorite cities to visit in the U.S.

These cuts were due there was way too much November flying out there. I think we will see more to come very close in and definitely alot of December cuts coming also.

Holiday bookings are on track terrible in theory but it's hard to know if there will be some last minute surge demand. No one knows right now. People are playing things day to day here we might see a little surge close in but nothing even close to years past. If numbers are low I would expect a good bump just and only for the holidays.

Look for a psunami of January and Feb post holidays real hard cuts and even more tropical adds Florida, carribean , PSP since those are the only places people want to travel too. I predict the airlines particularly the US 3 legacies really cut hard in January united can't keep losing $25 million a day. We will see a brutal cut schedules coming post holidays even if there is a vaccine approved it won't be distributed soon enough to save January a pretty slow time anyway.

Yeah...unfortunately, the overseas airlines have not been coming back to SEA and according to the OAG data posted here, there haven't been too many coming back in the near future. But I can understand why...not because of SEA.

B6 ATL-BOS NOV 1.5>0.9[2]
B6 ATL-JFK NOV 1.5>1.2[3]

We keep seeing shrinkage and "rightsizing" from B6 at ATL. Will be interesting to see whether they continue with that station into next year or decide to close it outright. Many people have not been happy with B6's on-time performance in ATL, and they have sworn not to fly them again. B6 really needed to get a foothold in the market, but I don't see that happening now.

Exactly, and very well said. NAX and Condor will definitely not be flying anywhere and likely, won't even be around next year. CX and SQ were new to the SEA market and nice to have but not essential now. Seattle is and will remain an engine of economic growth and a magnet for business and tourism once the industry recovers, but it will take time.

Agreed. It's not media sensationalism, it's conspiracy fueled propaganda. The Pacific Northwest and the Seattle metropolitan area are highly desirable places to live. Travel to/from will recover. It will take time.

There is no chance of this happening. There quite a few stations they are out until April and ATL is far from it. Business demand out of NYC/BOS is at bare minimum right now. If you want to see rightsizing, you should take a look at Delta's LGA schedule.

Right now means nothing for flyers loyalty. The heavy FFs are benched. The airlines are just trying to keep connectivity, which JetBlue is doing to atl.
JetBlue has ATL as a spoke and a destination for it's loyal flyers , they don't really expect an ATL heavy base they know southwest and delta fly non-stop to everywhere. They are serving the market just fine , it's so their northeast flyers can get to Atlanta if need be.

I still don't think the political situation there is helping matters. But I really hope most of overseas airlines come back...and some.

I think you're way overestimating the impact of the political situation especially on international travel demand for SEA. Frankly, the civil unrest in SEA and PDX has hardly registered a blip in the international press other than there is general racial strife and civil unrest in the USA as a whole. You will be hard pressed to find many specific mentions of Seattle in most international press. It may be a deterrence to some domestic travellers, but international travel demand is suppressed mostly because of all the border restrictions and quarantine requirements; when foreign airlines restart flights to the US, their priorities of course are the usual suspects like NYC, ORD, SFO/LAX, and/or US partner hubs. SEA is not really in any of those categories.
