At May 28th the two latest produced UPS 747-8F's had a private meeting :roll: in Portland (KPDX)

N627UP and the unpainted, pre-delivery N628UP (in the back), both in Portland, May 28th 2021

Nice modification and new set up, looks like the fuel quantity indication panel on the overhead has been replaced as well ?


I am surprised the MCP appears to be unaltered from the original, our late model 757’s and all 767’s had the digital numbers that are easier to set, for some reason the original MCP numbers would ‘bounce around’ when you went to change them


The fuel indication panel is unchanged. Same for the MCP. They are gradually replacing the older bouncy indicators, but only when they fail. It is nicer to be able to see the MCP inputs on the screens and not rely on the MCP indications.



Thanks for the information, the fuel panel, like the rest of the cockpit just looks so immaculate compared to ours that I wondered if it had been replaced, we had an issue with ours where part of the digital number display would get distorted and / or obscured


Agree with you that you should not rely on the MCP numbers but always the FMA indications, those ‘bouncing numbers’ were annoying though !

Beautiful aircraft


Good to see new 747’s still going into service even though the production line is coming to an end


I really like this UPS livery as well, understated, but original, elegant and not boring like most US airlines

I think that was just a typo; I think he meant that 361UP was the last one to get the upgrade, and it was.


It actually is 391 that remains the be converted. I just misread some information. It will go through conversion this month, but is indeed still in Europe flying. Not sure when they are bringing it over.

I’m wasn’t aware of a firm policy of the CAM aircraft being restricted to Europe, but the JAL planes are. This is due to the lower doors not being able to accept the containers.


N391UP, the last 767-300F to receive the LDS conversion, seems to be ready for action again, she was ferried ILN-SDF at May 29th 2021

The next addition for the UPS MD11 fleet, N265UP (ex D-ALCK), performed her first test flight after HMV completion out of San Antonio (SAT) at June 29th 2021, see :

Sadly, the last three Lufthansa Cargo MD11 aircraft are not purchased by UPS, but the first (D-ALCA) is now purchased by Western Global. The two others (D-ALCC and D-ALCD) are also rumoured to go to the same company.

N265UP filed a flightplan for San Antonio (SAT) towards Grissom Aeroplex Peru, Indiana (GUS) at June 30th (for paint at the Indiana Dean Baldwin facility), however the flight diverted to San Antonio (due technical issues ?)

After a second attempt at July 03th , with callsign 5X9573, N265UP was finally ferried to Grissom Aeroplex Peru, Indiana (GUS) with callsign 5X9581 at July 6th.

Forgive me for asking, as it relates to the MD-11F fleet with the latest deliveries, what is the breakdown in numbers of GE powered aircraft vs PW? Has one over the other distinguished itself as the better freighter?
Did you know that a Boeing 717-200 is really a McDonnell Douglas MD95-30? ;-)

250-265 are GE powered. 270-296 (minus 277 of course) are PW powered. Each have their pluses and minuses. CF6s tend to shake more and, but in practice they are effectively identical.

I noticed that on our 767-224 and -424’s, the GE engine was ‘buzzy’ in certain power settings significantly more than others


The RR engine on our 757’s was much much smoother


Noticed that as a passenger riding on BA’s 777, a lot more vibration with the GE 90 whereas the RR aircraft are extremely smooth

Having said that, I never had an issue with either one, both engines were very responsive and reliable and the GE’s incredibly quick start time never ceased to amaze

I was disappointed UPS didn’t take the last few LH MD-11’s Western Global has them. They fly some just painted white. Come on how much do some painted letters cost. Fed Ex took some and it was thought for spare parts but they are being activated. I guess UPS had their fill of MD-11’s

Some are white because the customer prefers it that way (or at least is perceived to prefer it that way). Some ACMI and in some cases military.

When UPS started with the MD11/PW4000 operation in 2002 , the PW4000 had a lot of stall issues and an expensive program (ring case modification) started to solve these issues.
