FAQ

SOURCE: OAG

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

The original dataset was corrupt. Had to wait until it was corrected.

Also, if you aren't aware airlineroute.net shut down, at least for now. This post is not connected to airlineroute, other than likely being one of their sources!

Is this an error? I don’t think Xiamen Air has authority to fly passenger Fuzhou to Los Angeles? I know they’re doing several cargo-only flights on the route, so did it accidentally show up?

Yes, officially the BER code became operational Oct 25 (SXF has changed to BER; the new BER terminals don't open until Oct 31 and TXL closes gradually in the week or two after that).

UA's Berlin schedule overall didn't really change. They'd already had it on the books to resume Berlin at the end of March 2021 and this OAG update merely reflected that change.

There is a BER megathread discussing it all in detail.

I thought I saw that BA was originally going to bump up to 2x daily on BOS-LHR soon; now, they're planning on fewer than one daily (0.9)? Wow...no end in sight.

No idea. I don't know why cargo flights would be in OAG, but it is possible that like charters the airline just puts them in out of laziness and just doesn't apply any sellable inventory. OR it's a real flight.

Out with the old, in with the new. Now that Boutique is building up PDX (EUG, RDM, and PDT), wonder if they'll be an AS* code share in the future like 4B does with UA.

Confused by this one, anybody have thoughts?

Lots of military traffic in/out of ORF but just the weight of their bags , how will it survive? Can’t see the a/c flying full load with bags and only one flight a day.

Interesting to see DL finally trying something besides ATL again. Looked like AA had a lot of success at EYW. DFW went from seasonal Saturdays to daily mainline, ORD and PHL also went to daily as well/ They all stayed year round, even if less than daily after COVID. UA seemed to have good luck out of EWR, going to double daily at one point. I'm still surprised that they haven't tried a 175 from DTW. Key West is very popular in the midwest.

I guess it was just too short for AS, but strange to see it unserved by AS.

I'm really surprised the LCCs aren't jumping into EYW even if its via FLL. There's a quasi-scheduled carrier doing FLL-EYW I think. Awful drive.

The problem ... there is not enough hotel rooms for all of those extra proposed flights. Key West isn’t that big ...

A very healthy sign for UA and Florida that these routes are being extended. I wasn't sure p2p from Florida would work especially to LGA & BOS (particularly from FLL & MCO which are busy, over-saturated markets to New York). Pleasantly surprised by this development!

The Miami - Key West drive is interesting - once. Yes, we might see people flying instead of driving.

DTW - EYW would need O&D and I'm not sure it's there in numbers - nothing like NYC - EYW. If people are going to connect they can do so in ATL as well as DTW. That's why you have a big, proximate hub.

So now AA won’t be restarting JFK-GRU and JFK-EZE as previously planned on December 17th. And DFW-MAD is going away for the winter as well. It’s going to be a rough winter for international flights, or lack thereof.

Good to see CUN coming back this winter to CVG. I don't think DL has given up on CVG at least as a focus city goes..

Also, it’s likely that those flights aren’t going out full to EYW. They may be more full than potential alternatives would be but it could simply be a case of more capacity with less overall traffic.

It's a beautiful but tiring drive. Much of it is one lane in each direction with a fair amount of local traffic. Driving Miami-Jacksonville or Miami-Tallahassee is actually easier IMO.

That's why the options of American Eagle and Silver from MIA and FLL respectively survive. It's not just connecting traffic but surely some O&D also.

I guess it was just too short for AS, but strange to see it unserved by AS.

I'm really surprised the LCCs aren't jumping into EYW even if its via FLL. There's a quasi-scheduled carrier doing FLL-EYW I think. Awful drive.

Silver has reduced frequency on the their EYW flights out of FLL and AA has dramatically cut the flights out of MIA. Given the relatively high price of flights to EYW in the past, I'm a bit surprised that the cuts were so deep there.

Going over seven mile bridge, or seeing the old bridge at Bahia Honda are both worth the drive at least once. It seems that when I connect, I'm either rushing to barely make the connection at MIA, or driving is faster. The biggest reason to fly is that your car is basically useless once you get to EYW, unless you're staying farther up the Keys.

Q4 & Q1 are the strongest with mid 60s each way so 30-35 passengers one way per day. DL used to run BZN with weaker numbers on an A319 so it's not probable but not out of the realm of possibilities as a Saturday only flight.

Are the runway limitations at EYW too great for the LCCs with the aircraft types and business models they use?

I find it hard to believe EYW-FLL can't work operationally with any narrowbody aircraft. Agree on JFK or ORD.

Confused by this one, anybody have thoughts?

Lots of military traffic in/out of ORF but just the weight of their bags , how will it survive? Can’t see the a/c flying full load with bags and only one flight a day.

4B supposedly is looking at adding several routes at BWI and ORF.

According to the Virginian-Pilot newspaper:

Teresa Mesman, marketing director for Boutique Air, said the company sees Norfolk airport as a good place to expand its route map, describing it as a potential “hub” for that growth.

The company, so far, has no estimate for how many routes it foresees in Norfolk, she said.

“No pun intended, but the sky’s the limit," she said of the company’s plans. Raleigh-Durham is another destination the airline is eyeing, she said. The airline is hoping to get feedback from Norfolk travelers about routes they’d be interested in.
https://www.pilotonline.com/business/consumer/vp-bz-boutique-air-orf-20201022-v4xn5gfqkzeaje5u7eyrce5kda-story.html

Then there are reports that 4B is considering adding BWI-MSS to go along with BOS-MSS.
MASSENA — A destination that had originally been on Boutique Air’s flight schedule could be coming back.

Massena Town Council member Samuel D. Carbone Jr. said Boutique Air is weighing the possibility of flying to Baltimore-Washington International Airport in lieu of one of three daily round-trip flights to Boston.

“They’re thinking about taking the afternoon flight, the middle flight, and going somewhere else, like Baltimore. You would still get two flights to Boston,” he said.

Glad to see this route returning! I thought that the new year-round SEA-ONT flights were possibly started to replace the seasonal PSP service, even though PSP carries pretty decent loads. More choices for everyone.

I'm a little surprised that DL doesn't make this service year-round...using E-175's during the summer months.

No. And JFK-CDG, which was supposed to come back on line this month, isn't either. The only passenger route (long haul international) right now at JFK for AA is LHR, AA 106. There are cargo flights operating here and there (JFK-CDG has gone out a few times) but other than that, no.

A very healthy sign for UA and Florida that these routes are being extended. I wasn't sure p2p from Florida would work especially to LGA & BOS (particularly from FLL & MCO which are busy, over-saturated markets to New York). Pleasantly surprised by this development!

Nothing is busy or over saturated at this point. Especially LGA Florida. If you have a plane and 100 people willing to pay you something, why not?

I feel like we see some iteration of this every few years a small airline starts up from small Northern Ava airports or Oregon airports and attempts these types of routes. Who was it that flew the Saab’s from Crescent City to PDX a couple years ago? Was it PenAir? I always hope one becomes successful. Horizon used to fly a lot of these routes.

Thanks enilria. I’m still a loyal follower of your weekly OAG thread, but I’m still getting used to the change to Tuesday, so I now often see it later in the week. It’s too bad the weekly load was moved from the weekends as it made for great leisurely Sunday reading material. I remember way back when it also wasn’t on Sundays.

Also, if you aren't aware airlineroute.net shut down, at least for now. This post is not connected to airlineroute, other than likely being one of their sources!

Looks like airline route or routes online is back online today.

100 flights a day between LGA or BOS to MCO and yet people throw shade at the thought of B6 starting MCO-DTW, CLE, ORD. :duck:

Exactly it's more than just people from NYC and BOS who want cheap flights to Florida. Yet all the other markets outside of the top 10 have to pay for these follies so people can fly for $10 to Florida.
the truth does matter, guys. too bad it's often quite subjective. the truth is beyond the mere facts and figures. it's beyond good and bad, right and wrong...

Out with the old, in with the new. Now that Boutique is building up PDX (EUG, RDM, and PDT), wonder if they'll be an AS* code share in the future like 4B does with UA.

Yes...they actually had a quite an operation out of PDX with the Saab's until they went bankrupt. Contour Airlines took over the CEC flights, but now flies to OAK.

Don't forget every single airline HAS to fly from NYC, BOS, & PHL to Florida. Joking aside MCO is a market that goes up when there's more demand. If you have a Frontier A320 going to a major US metropolitan area, there will be butts to put in seats after you add the flight as opposed to business centric markets that can only take a flight or two before someone has to give if there's competition at all.

DTW getting some healthy adds back, and it looks like at the expense of BOS/JFK. B6 isnt taking long to pounce, increasing BOSDTW to 4x, with the new JFK, thats 6x daily from DTW. Impressive finally for them.

All this Florida stuff is interesting. TPA was hella crowded 2 weeks ago, but RSW had just as many carriers add for October and it was a ghost town yesterday. Perhaps it was my times, but i left late afternoon and arrived back at 9pm the following day. I saw 3 B6 at the gate, no NK. 5 AA. DL had 4. UA had 3. WN had 1 (thats way off), F9/SY no shows and typically they both have multiple planes on the ground at any given time. AS starts the 20nov

I still think (and this is the time to try it) B6 needs to run a couple multi stop intra Florida flights to pick up people and drop them at FLL twice daily. You can say, just drive all you want, but driving sucks, especially in Florida. Its deadly. B6 could run (entertain me here) TLH/SRQ/RSW-FLL and maybe another on the other coast PNS/JAX/MCO-FLL. They are just not an option for any of us down here without a long drive and chaotic situation for parking/driving at FLL. throw some E190s on these routes , run them twice daily to meet banks. It would work. They of course need TPA-FLL in there as well, so adjust the routing accordingly, or honestly do TPA-FLL on its own a few times a day. Silver is hanging by a thread.
I haven't been everywhere, but it's on my list!

I think the TLH/SRQ/RSW/FLL milk run would be interesting. Also would love to see TLH-FLL back as a route with jet service. Haven't had jets on the route since DL pulled out a few years back. TLH-MCO would also be a smart ad when the A220's come online for B6.
