FAQ

SOURCE: OAG

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Unless it is as I suggested, I don't understand adding ECP/VPS/PNS. Why not just throw in PFN/TLH/GPT to round things out, LOL?

That would be nice. I'd think IAH or ORD or even EWR could be pulled off. I've been hoping for that the last 4 years I've been here.

I appreciate that. There's a lot of drama with this thing that goes on, much of it via PM with airlines peeved about one thing or another, or all sorts of other things. So it is good to get support!

It's not random Florida UA is adding with ECP/VPS/PNS - it's beach Florda. It's a bet on beaches and theme parks - not college students, state business, or naval contractors.

To a large degree DL had just been loading 2019's schedule for more than a couple months out. It seems fairly cconvincing at this point that systemwide business for Jan. 2021 won't be more than a small fraction of Jan. 2019 (or 2020). I haven't followed AA/UA/WN schedules closely enough to see if they're doing substantially the same thing.

I think UA flew DEN-ECP/VPS/PNS last year, I think Saturdays only around Spring Break. Looks like they are extending and expanding on that with the hope leisure traffic to Florida holds up.

Thanks for the update, enilria. This is becoming my new Tuesday (instead of Sunday) morning routine!

I continue to be shocked that there is/was enough air traffic to support 3 commercial airports within 120ish miles/2.5 hours of each other in the FL Panhandle, let alone 1 carrier serving all 3. I would imagine most of the "Redneck Riviera's" customer base to be people within driving distance in the South or maybe a short flight from TX. Good for UA for building on last year's limited Spring Break service, but I agree that this is of the 'throw against a wall and see what sticks' variety.

Likely a typo/error, but PFN is closed and its former terminal building has transformed into a K-8 charter school, with ECP as the region's current airport. Unless you meant to type MOB instead of PFN in keeping with the regional geographic cluster.

Interesting. I don't believe DL has operated this market with that frequency beyond the holiday season. And yet, UA is reducing from SFO:

I think that used to be true, but the appeal of the FL Panhandle has steadily grown. F9 already flies DEN-PNS (3-4 weekly) and has flown it for years now. WN has also played around with weekend DEN-PNS service in past summers. And as others have mentioned, UA has done some limited DEN-PNS/VPS/ECP before. Plus, G4 flies to VPS from a ton of destinations across half the country.

I don't think it's really that difficult for UA to fill a few E175s to markets like PNS/ECP/VPS during the higher Spring break period from DEN...unless COVID really kills traffic this winter.

Correct. United flew all 3 of those in early CY 2020, although just on Saturdays.

FWIW, they also flew DEN-SRQ in early CY 2020. They didn't fly DEN-PBI, though - that one is legitimately new vs one year ago.

Everywhere in Florida is close to a beach. ECP is 44 miles from VPS. PNS to VPS is 40 miles. That's my point. That's insane.

I was just being sarcastic that they are adding several new routes to destinations so crazily close to each other.

If anything, the Florida Panhandle used to be plagued by such high airfares that people weren't just driving there from Atlanta and Nashville - they were often driving all the way down from places like Chicago and Ohio too. The advent of WN at PNS and ECP, and then ULCC services on F9 and G4, really made the area a lot more accessible. Seems like even AA and UA passengers have realized that this part of Florida has the state's nicest beaches, while places like Pensacola and Destin have probably realized that folks flying in tend to spend a lot more than those that drove (to save money). I have to think the Florida Panhandle is on NK's radar. Perhaps B6's too. I could even see the Canadian carriers flying there in the future.

Well what do you know I do know something and an A321 no less. Now Delta can we talk about DTW-VPS another whole that is in dire need of filling

Also nice to see the upped DTW frequency in the latest NK schedule update. It's been said that the Michigan economy is on of the fasted economies coming back to life during covid.

I have to respectfully disagree on Michigan coming back to life to any markets but Florida. Michigan and Florida are naturally connected due to the fact that thousands of households move down here yearly especially to Central Florida where the Tigers have a spring training facility. PNS would be the best airport to serve in the panhandle, not far from both Fort Walton and Panama City Beaches.

Either before Thanksgiving or after Thanksgiving UA's January schedule will be out and there will be massive cuts systemwide. Once the holidays are past UA is not expecting to see any sizable increase in demand until March at the earliest. I know Kirby has said a lot of things publicly but the reality is January and February 2021 are going to be extremely hard.

Having flown into all three in the last couple of years, it seems that Panama City is the poor stepchild of the three. They built the new airport so far out into the swamps, that it is hard to call it "Panama City". VPS seems to be the easiest in/out of the three, and just an hour to both. Anything west of Pensacola then PNS is by far simpler.

PFN closed and ECP replaced it.

UA doesn't fly to GNV because it doesn't have a suitable hub to fly it from as it's nearly all academic traffic related to UF and VFR traffic to/from Ocala. Most of that is either staying within the Southeast or going up the eastern seaboard. DL and AA just have a huge structural advantage in GNV.

Trans States operated daily from ORD and IAH to all three as UA last year. Long haul for a 145, but I did it several times in 2019.

LGA-ORD sees DL mainline return in January with 2x A220 in addition to 2x E175 and it looks like JFK-MSP goes back to mainline in January.

Thanks for the hard work Enilria. Yes it's beach, beach, beach, particularly FL for now. The Panhandle and Northern Florida are becoming more popular. I'm looking to move from MIA to either Jacksonville, Penscola, or Ft Walton Beach next year. Enough of Miami-it's too much like NYC but with better weather and palm trees. Business travel looks sunk for now. I'm interviewing for a job tomorrow that's 75% travel as a Consultant but I was told in the first interview travel is not expected to commence again for at least six months. And this is a company with nearly 1,000 people that would normally be traveling.

It's clear traffic will be dead Jan and Feb. DL cut alot , seems like AA and UA still have alot to go and too much on the books , right? Maybe expect alot next week?

Sadly I heard Thanksgiving cancellations are pouring right now from a friend. All the people who optimistically booked this summer are now getting scared or relatives don't want them. Which means lots of empty planes or the airlines are gonna need to cancel. Cancels trigger refunds though not credits, they might try to delay. IIRC AA tried to add alot iirc for Thanksgiving to cash in on the demand we saw late summer before this rush wasn't that right? This might effect them the most

Business travel is dead for 2021 companies don't want the liability until covid is known not a risk. More importantly companies are not putting those travel budgets in their 2021 budgets. The money won't be there to book. It's really looking more and more like leisure and domestic travel focus for 2021! Not what the legacies need at all

I know TPA never started and I don't think the other two did either. These were all announced pre-COVID and even then I and several other posters thought RDU was the only one that had any chance of working. DL kept pushing them back and has apparently finally come to the same conclusion and is permanently axing them.

Think that will be true for every airline. Only saving grace could be if COVID improves or the vaccine is widely available before April. January and February are typically the quietest of the year but with many people doing remote work/schooling, Florida could be a saving grace. It’s not going to be a cash cow but it could help put a band aid that helps airlines survive what will ultimately be a tougher time than the past few months.

Indeed, it looks like the (soon-to-be former?) focus cities at BOS, RDU, AUS, CMH and CVG all took it pretty hard on this update. When you cut as much of the fleet as they've had to cut, something's got to go, though - and it certainly won't be the core hubs. Nice to see SLC-ANC go back to daily again, too.

Most, if not all of these cuts, are currently in effect. They are just extending them into 2021, and eventually into Spring. It would not surprise me if DL decides to abandon RDU and CVG all together with the exception of flights to hub cities only. The amount of cuts by DL to BOS and NYC are staggering. Pretty much all that is left is Florida and Hubs. NYC has slightly more to the west coast but it has become an either/or option of JFK/LGA for any city pair with again the exception of hub cities. Boston is pretty much game over for DL, at least for the foreseeable future. If they can't even make MIA, RSW, PBI, or JAX work, you know they have no intention of sticking it out.

Cancelations so far this week, are off the charts. People are getting cold feet with a week to go and do not want to risk giving or receiving Covid. Christmas break is the last hope for the airlines this year. If the number of infections is like this a month from now, then the number of cancelations will be equally as bad if not worse.

The focus cities were living on biz traffic and well.....
Only exception could be BOS....with a considerable pre-COVID TATL menagerie that offered an alternative to the JFK. When things return to normal-ish....I suspect BOS will bounce back.

Is anyone surprised by any of this in the covid-era of about 30-40% of normal passengers with almost no TPAC or TATL traffic and business traffic down 85%.

Lets keep things in perspective here. Its more or less status quo.

They just basically extended the current limited schedule already in place through December onward through the end of February. They've been doing the same thing each month for the last 8-9 months now, so it shouldn't really be a surprise. This was just a little different in that they cut two months at a time instead of one month at a time as they had been doing in the past. Just as in the past, the months beyond (March and later) are largely pre-Covid schedules and shouldn't be taken very seriously.

At MIA at least, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving (typically the busiest travel day of the year) has the same amount of flights scheduled as every other Wednesday. The whole holiday weekend doesn’t look any different from the weekends preceding it in terms of flying, other than there being significantly less flying on Thanksgiving Day. There really doesn’t seem to be much extra flying this year.

Looks like the Republic flying got crushed.

No idea of Delta's contract requirements, but hasn't December and January already been bid by the pilots?

December has already been bid and awarded.

The big change posted is for Jan, which will go out to bid end of the month. Subsqeuent changes after that go into open-time if they add flights after the bid has been posted.

This is how DL has been doing things for the past several months. They generally keep the default domestic schedule loaded until 6 weeks prior, then trim it down to the COVID-era schedule, and then schedule tune from there on out.

Its apparent to me both from the schedule they've loaded and where we are at with the virus, that DL is going to continue middle seat blocking past Jan 6th.

Its the status quo, just rolling forward the "covid cuts" that have been in place for months.

That poster continually bashes DL and is a bitter AS employee who finds any chance to bash DL at SEA.
Nothing really to see there.

But yeah they have no intention of sticking it out and it’s game over because MIA & PBI are cut but they continue to serve FLL (the same metro area) and then JAX and RSW? What an ignorant comment. The world doesn’t revolve around JAX and RSW. For the record - BOS will see more TATL destinations served by DL than MSP, DTW or SEA but yet it’s game over for DL in BOS? Wake up guy...

Just to be clear, CMH was/is not a DL focus city. Pre-COVID there were only a few non-hub p2p routes like LAX and seasonal CUN. DL is only the third largest carrier at CMH behind WN and AA.

As others have said, these aren’t new, just an extension of current cuts.

Can we please spare the theatrics. They are just pushing the existing schedule forward as they have been largely doing each month for a number of months now. Here's the December schedule cuts which were published right here on a.net a few weeks ago (10/27) -- viewtopic.php?t=1453471. They are largely identical to these cuts. They were also largely identical to November, October, September, etc. As mentioned upthread, these cuts pale in comparison to what DL has done in some of their other hubs like BOS, LGA, and JFK and focus cities like CVG and AUS.
