FAQ

SOURCE: OAG

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Regarding the LGA-RSW move to JFK-RSW, I think it just shows how little demand LGA has right now even vs JFK. Among the big 3 NYC airports in terms of demand
EWR -> JFK -> LGA.

I think it shows more the downside of split hubs in a bear market. To make flights as successful as possible DL need to maximize connectivity in major hubs. Since RSW is more leisure oriented it makes sense to shift that to JFK since most passengers won’t care which NYC airport they use, they will care more about price/schedule, and they can connect onwards to whatever European flights DL is still operating from JFK.

LGA has no demand right now. Why is this so hard to figure out? JetBlue is running far more Florida flights right now out of HPN than LGA. And DL has cut JFK a lot less than LGA.

And the reason it has no demand right now is because airlines are prioritizing moving NYC traffic through their JFK hub than LGA operations, to bolster the strength of their hub. EWR and HPN both have catchment areas that would never seriously consider driving to JFK or especially LGA.

Interesting to see AS add back SAN-SMF back but I don’t see it bookable, unlike the other changes. So I’m guessing they’re waiting to make an announcement, which they haven’t been doing for individual adds, or it was a mistake.

Airlines are prioritizing JFK traffic over LGA, because JFK simply has more demand right now. That's going to be case for a while. Liberal work from home policies means more people that can afford leisure travel are leaving from their homes in brooklyn, Long island and westchester vs Manhattan.

HPN does not have any catchment area that would never consider driving to JFK.

LGA is a ghost town.

Traffic is all leisure...that is JFKs specialty.

Furthermore, the money set that lived in the city that used LGA to get to places like PBI are no longer in the city. They are east, north, or west of city...or have relocated altogether.

LGA is suffering from

-major population shift
-a sizable population loss
-onerous quarantine restrictions that dont exist at EWR (National Guard troops are now actively meeting flights like they are in New York)

I imagine the next NYC shutdown (Which is coming shortly) Will have long lasting impacts

B6 isn't even relevant in the LGA market. It was 1/10th the size of DL for 12 months ending 9/2020. It was 1/10th the size of DL for all of 2019, too.

How recent are your data for O&D passengers by NYC airport, to assert there's no LGA demand?

They have so little Europe now, but why not move TPA then?

Possible they rolled back to an earlier version of the schedule by mistake and forgot to fix that, but unlikely.

Has real estate collapsed in NYC? Should we be buying lofts for nickels on the dollar? LOL

So when you say "population loss and shift", do you mean more people live geographically closer to JFK and EWR?
But once COVID is under control (whenever that may be), do you expect LGA to return to high traffic, given its close proximity to Manhattan?

I think it shows more the downside of split hubs in a bear market. To make flights as successful as possible DL need to maximize connectivity in major hubs. Since RSW is more leisure oriented it makes sense to shift that to JFK since most passengers won’t care which NYC airport they use, they will care more about price/schedule, and they can connect onwards to whatever European flights DL is still operating from JFK.

They have so little Europe now, but why not move TPA then?

LGA has no demand right now. Why is this so hard to figure out? JetBlue is running far more Florida flights right now out of HPN than LGA. And DL has cut JFK a lot less than LGA.

Buy why only RSW

Has real estate collapsed in NYC? Should we be buying lofts for nickels on the dollar? LOL

DL already has multiple daily JFK-TPA flights. They currently do not serve RSW from JFK, and the market is too small to make it worthwhile to serve from both.

B6 isn't even relevant in the LGA market. It was 1/10th the size of DL for 12 months ending 9/2020. It was 1/10th the size of DL for all of 2019, too.

How recent are your data for O&D passengers by NYC airport, to assert there's no LGA demand?

They have fewer slots at HPN than LGA, yet they are running far more flights at HPN than LGA. What does that tell you? B6 is a real brand in NYC. If there is enough demand, they will be flying more out of LGA.

It's a smaller market out of NYC that probably doesn't justify split traffic.

Unfortunately for me, real estate is still expensive in NYC. A lot of people have move to their second homes until at least next summer, which means they are living out in long island or westchester instead of UES/UWS. It's a small fraction of New Yorkers, but a significant fraction of those with a lot of disposable income. At the same time, WFH policies means that instead of leaving from Manhattan office to go to Florida, a lot of people are now leaving from their home in Jersey or Long Island.

For the first part, a lot of young people will move back to NYC next year and a large portion of those who moved to their second home will also come back (not sure how large). So with time, that portion of leisure traffic will come back to LGA. For the second part, I think that's more of a permanent shift.

I take it AF will continue to operate CDG-YVR-PPT, with YVR as a fuel stop only (2nd freedom)?

And MIA-PTP, was this operated in the past only during the holiday period? I remember the ATL-PTP AF attempted a few years ago.

Little business demand, yes, and yet UA added those point-to-points out of LGA to capture snowbird traffic and people escaping the NYC restrictions.

Oh, northern Westchester/Putnam/Dutchess will avoid JFK at pretty much all costs. While SWF is obviously the closest airport to Poughkeepsie, HPN is the next-closest and EWR is a shorter drive than JFK.

None of the people I know who live in NYC that have remote jobs are spending the winter in NYC. They've like you said, gone to second homes, staying a family members' second / vacation homes, or grabbed up short-term rentals (STRs) in sun/beach markets or ski mountain towns, or some just living back with their parents.

This "un-announcement" of the return of SAN-SMF is wonderful news!

However, your comment regarding bookability is interesting. I was going to offer an alternate explanation: as AS has done recently in another example -- SAN-SBA -- I feel they might be floating these new (or returning) routes as tests just to see what type of interest is generated (read: how many bookings they get.) But of course that idea doesn't work if the flights are not bookable.

These times currently showing do not look like previous skeds in the market so I doubt these are a mistaken return of "ghost" or default schedules that were previously in place.

I've never really understood why the route was dropped in the first place & I hoped it was a temporary cut so I'm optimistic that your suggestion of an upcoming announcement is correct. I will definitely stay tuned to see what happens next with this route!

From what I say in another thread the RSW market is leading the Flordia market, Miami and FLL not as much. As noted much of travel is price sensitive and by moving to JFK they capture LI as well as NYC. Speaking of the city another lockdown will force even more people to move, less offices to ever reopen fully and less young people to move back. After a year young people are going to have a life somewhere else, including a possible new career and aren't going to come back to NYC. Particularly if the nightlife is akin to Hootersville.

Forgive my ignorance, but what’s the official line in the sand in regards to closing a station? Did AA formally announce the closure of those 3? What’s the difference between these, and say, DBQ?

Thanks in advance.

Another month of severe cuts to the NYC area by AA. JFK seems to be stuck in an infinite loop of around 15 flights a day to hubs/1-2 additional destinations. LGA has a bit more variety, but is still severely cut. It is sad to see routes like LGA-ORD be cut so much. Especially, since that was their most advertised and full route (AA Shuttle). I was at LGA a week ago and they still had the AA shuttle ads up.

Really hoping to see a return to NYC from AA. Maybe once the vaccine rolls out. Predictions?

I get Long Island, but what about the "mainland". I guess EWR has taken over that market since it gained lower fare options en masse.

The AS increase SEA-DFW might be related to entering one world in March since DFW is a one world hub. Also if memory serves me correctly DFW-SEA is one of the route AS/AA can't codeshare as a hub to hub carve out of the Virgin merger.

The main reason why people originally moved out is due to the outbreak and the shutdown. At this point, COVID is a national problem. There is not much to gain by going to another place that is probably also shut down. Young people will come back, because there really is nowhere like NYC. And also, there aren't that many places with jobs paying 80k right out of college. Rent will come down and that will encourage more young people to come to NYC. NYC attracts a certain crowd of people who don't like to settle down. I doubt that portion of the population will shrink due to the pandemic. Even if a lot of bars and clubs close, people will just move on to house parties.

The problem for airlines operating out of LGA is that these are also not the high yielding travelers that made the airline industry profitable. So if a significant chunk of people with disposable income and family move to suburbs and never come back, it will take time for the new people moving in to get to the point where they have enough money to spend a lot of that on travel.

Not Florida, it's open with some modifications. No one running around telling you not to have Thanksgiving. Those young people are not coming back. The jobs won't be there. They have found out that living in Tampa, Jacksonville, Austin, Pensacola isn't the boonies. They will have found new jobs, gotten new friends, joined new gyms. Our Governors are not shutting down.

I'm in Tampa this week and I'm going to dinner tonight on the water. And outside not because some dufus mayor has demanded such but the fact that sitting outside near the water at night during winter time is a really nice thing to do in Florida.

Jan cuts finally seem more realistic. February looks too much flying still, but time to adjust later on. Even if the vaccine is approved yesterday the mass production and two seperate shots can't happen by February. It's just not possible for mass flying to be back. I know they are trying to be as optimistic as possible but I think they can safely make Feb like January at this point. March smart to stay bullish, but February can't support the current schedules we all know this.

How could you say they are not relevant?

They have their own terminal, A shuttle to Boston, and flights to Florida...plus 180 flights a day down the road at JFK...And their headquarters is 4 miles west of LaGuardia.

LaGuardia is a ghost town right now because it depends on business traffic that doesn’t exist and an inner-city wealthy population that is displaced at the moment.

You want real numbers? Try -70 percent. As devastating as it can get

Yeah, DFW-SEA/PDX and PHX-SEA/PDX were the routes that they can't be codeshare on.

This makes me wonder what the future of AS's DAL routes are going to look like...

I can't believe they are finally going to fly this.

I believe this and CVG were the only two destinations that DL flew into SEA that AS did not. But I find it hard to believe that they're going to fly JAC-SEA 1x daily starting in June onward, although this could change as they continue to update/reduce their schedules later down the road. This seems like a weekend-only type of route.

a lot of the February cuts are only partial. I'd assume that the dates that have been cut so far are similar to January.

At least in Northeast, it looks the airlines are expecting any bounce back until at least March. My guess is April/May bounceback is possible if a significant number of people get vaccinated by then. I'd imagine most people that want to travel would try to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

I think the west coast quarantines killed a lot of the transcon demand.

It’s pretty bad. Just as DL has moved LGA-RSW to JFK, B6 has moved LGA-TPA to EWR.

B6 will operate only 27 peak day departures from EWR in January. Anyone have numbers for LAX?

I think we’ll see little growth in February followed by growing demand in March and even more in April.

Seems to be a really bad year or so for Stewart, with first Norwegian pulling out and now even US carriers drawing down their operations there.

AS did announce seasonal service between JAC and several cities (I think SEA, SJC and SAN?). But it's good that at least SEA-JAC will be year-round. Maybe bookings are looking encouraging for year-round service.

enilria "AA Closes HPN/IPT/SWF" did you mean HVN and not HPN?

This leaves HVN and IPT with no service. Always difficult to see cities that have had commercial service since nearly day one now go away. HVN saw American and Eastern service going way back and IPT saw TWA and United.

IPT just put $75 million into that airport with a new terminal only a couple years ago

Don't confuse year round with "dual seasonal". The only true year round destinations for JAC are DEN, SLC and DFW. Others like MSP, ORD, LAX and ATL operate in winter and summer but take a break in spring and fall.

You are correct about JAC and CVG being the only non-AS domestic DL SEA routes pre-pandemic.

Peak season in Jackson Hole is truly peak season. It's not unusual to see 6 or 7 mainline Airbii on the ramp at once along with some regional jets. Even if the flights aren't full, fares are high. I could definitely see AS make SEA-JAC work daily in peak winter and summer. The big guys all go many times mainline daily from their big hubs. SEA is Alaska's big hub and could support one RJ a day.

I think it's quite telling Delta for example is flying RJs from MSP and DTW to New York City while sending many A319s to Jackson Hole in the offseason.

After a year young people are going to have a life somewhere else, including a possible new career and aren't going to come back to NYC. Particularly if the nightlife is akin to Hootersville.

Eh this is not necessarily true. I know multiple young people who have left, are leaving (two this Friday) and are looking into leaving. The rents have not come down, or not enough just yet. Winter is coming, there is no social activity. You might as well live your life in a lower cost of living place with better weather. A house party is not a permanent long term substitute for a bar and a club. We are not in college anymore.

Interesting to see AS add back SAN-SMF back but I don’t see it bookable, unlike the other changes. So I’m guessing they’re waiting to make an announcement, which they haven’t been doing for individual adds, or it was a mistake.

Looks like it's loaded now for booking.

There are always young people that leave the city and new ones come in. Young people that come back are not necessarily the same ones that leave. If enough people leave, rent will come down and living in the city will become more appealing. People will vaccinated and NYC will probably achieve herd immunity faster than anywhere else. Look around at the mask wearing compliance in NYC. People generally take COVID seriously in NYC.

Having said that, the new crowd that comes back may not have the same level of disposable income to fly around. That's the medium term challenge for an airport like LGA. If companies are using decentralized offices and more WFH policies, then more of the people that flew a lot will be departing and arriving from NJ, Westchester, long island, CT. These are all places that are likely to chose EWR/JFK ahead of LGA.

Thank you for the great work. I just want to add that maybe airlines would partially reverse the January TATL routes and capacity cut if the following news are true. It is reported that US may cancel the Europe and Brazil travel ban soon.

Let us hope this may provide some boost in the sentiment and we may see some frequency REDO in coming weeks.

One has to wonder if there is any hope for Stewart post-COVID.
