Piedmont (AA) Dash 8 Engine Color

Mon Nov 30, 2020 9:48 pm

Hi all,

The Dash-8's at Piedmont are long gone, but I have always wondered why the engines and landing gears were painted this strange off-blue color, instead of matching the fuselage. Pretty sure this was the only aircraft in all of American's fleet to have this anomaly with the current livery. Any ideas/information?

Thanks!

I believe that it is just a remnant from the old US Airways Express livery. After American and US Airways merged, they just left those parts the same color when painting the aircraft in American Eagle livery, as it was probably an added cost to repaint those parts.

Couldn’t tell you why the cowlings were blue, but it wasn’t the same blue as the white scheme.

They were dark blue with UW, Grey with AA.

I believe it's the same color as the "American Eagle" lettering...
...and I always wondered why they did it, too.
I thought it looked good, but it made no sense to me as to why.

I'm thinking that the main reason they painted the Dash 8 engines dark grey was because it was easier and cheaper than the metallic silver, and more consistent as far as variations in shade for when they need to swap out hatch covers, gear doors, gear struts, etc.

The dark grey also doesn't show as much dirt and grime.

Simply put: the dark grey was more practical while still matching the brand.
I'd take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day.

That's hardly the same blue:

Where are we getting "blue" from? It's the same grey as the "American Eagle" and N-Number on the fuselage.

In another picture comparison that I had looked at, the color contrast was not that sharp. It seemed that the US Airways blue had faded into whatever new color is on the American Eagle livery, as it was two years between when the pictures were taken. However, the pictures you posted show a more stark difference, which is clearly a new paint job.

Consensus seems to be that it's the same gray color as the words on the fuselage. Thank you guys!

I'd say that it hides dirt perfectly - the exhaust leaves blackish dirt. This one isn't too bad, but gives you an idea:

Maybe they thought they could disguise those parts and people wouldn’t notice they were on a prop plane.
