Thu Dec 03, 2020 3:21 am

Does Cubana Airlines still fly from Havana to Toronto-YYZ and Montreal-YUL? I tried to look up flights on Travelocity and other travel websites and the websites
wont post flights to Cuba. What planes does Cubana fly to Canada. For awhile Cubana flights were operated by a 3rd party like TACA.Is it still that way now or is Cubana

Any pre-pandemic Cubana flights to Canada, were on their IL-96-300 or the wet leased A320.

Forgot to add that Cubana has been pretty much grounded since the pandemic began, with all airports in Cuba closed until recently when some have opened again. There were a few cargo flights to Moscow during the pandemic.

Read that they plan to restart flights to Buenos Aires and Madrid sometime soon; no mention of Canada though.

Cubana flights to Canada primarily catered to Canadian tourists on vacation packages. They operated flights such as Santiago de Cuba-Toronto, Varadero-Toronto etc. and I don't believe they operated Havana-Toronto for the past several years. They leased A320s from Avion Express, among others. The IL-96 only visited YYZ on a couple of occasions.

To be more accurate, cargo flights to carry medical supplies to China (IIRC both Shanghai PVG and Guangzhou CAN) via Moscow.

There was a time when they flew a TU204 to YYZ. The TU204 flight was available with Hola Sun vacation packages.

What are or were the US airspace rules for Cubana flights?
Anything special?

Travelocity and many US based travel sites may not be able to list CU flights due to US sanctions. Similarly, I don't think you would find IranAir flights on those sites.

The ex. leased A320s by Cubana were permitted to transit US airspace without any issues on their way to YYZ/YUL.

It’s been a very long time since Cubana has been restricted through US airspace. When they flew IL-62s, TU-154s, TU-204s, IL-96s and Yak-42s to Canada, it was through US airspace. When you look at the hundreds of American carriers through Cuban airspace a day, it would be hard to justify restricting Cubans.

However. Multiple ATC infractions in the YYZ and YUL areas would not allow Cubana entry, thus the third party wet leases. I understand that has been solved and Cubana is no longer restricted.

I see no CU flights DFW-HAV on Google Flights, just AA and UA.

I don't think Cubana ever flies to DFW...

Also, the sanction covers financial transactions. Travelocity, as a travel agency, would not list any flight it cannot sell. Visa, MasterCard, Discover and Amex, being US firms, will not be able to process payments for Cubana as well.

Google lists flight schedule and status for information purpose, not for selling tickets.

Unless you have a Visa/MasterCard issued from a bank outside the US. I opened a bank account in the Cayman Islands for the sole purpose of credit card useage in Cuba. which I’m planning my 4th trip to once the nonsense pandemic is over.

For anyone else who is curious, I looked it up and Cubana has not had regularly-scheduled service to Canada since June 2018. They certainly may have had holiday charters in the intervening years, but no regularly-scheduled service.

Additionally, all of the regularly-scheduled flights in 2016, 2017, and 2018 were on A319 or A320 aircraft, indicating that they had been leased. The last time one of their aircraft flew a regular-scheduled flight to Canada was July 2015 when one of their IL-96's made a round trip from HAV to YYZ.

The key words in all of this are "regularly scheduled". Who knows what they did outside of that. I don't have access to that data.

Ok. How has the Canadian-Cuban market been, during that same time though?

I assume that the market was served, but mostly by Canadian based operators. If so, I could see where the barrier to entry are higher (having to use a 3rd party for some time, competing against better equipped Canadian carriers, competing against carriers with much larger Canadian P.O.S. penetration {and in many cases, the ability to better create markets}, and these carriers do not carry the Cubana baggage - state owned, sanctioned, Soviet Era aircraft for the backbone of the local fleet, et al). At this point, if Cubana plays their cards right - they could engage in cargo services to exchange products and facilitate trade.

Can CU enter into joint partnerships, or even into codeshares and interlining, with international partners? It seems rather inevitable - as they are unlikely to be able to compete in any other way, meaningfully - save for systemic change at CU, which when considering the severity of the changes needed - would require competent management and rapid change, neither of which are fortes of the current Cuban regime (of whom, change itself would be necessary for this to be possible). So, the 2nd best option is?

If the U.S. restricted Cubana overflights, Cuba would restrict U.S. carrier overflights in return. I remember some time back that Cuba had boosted up their overflight charges by a lot, forcing some carriers to fly around Cuba for financial reasons instead of direct to destination with Cuba right in the flight path. As I recall ...but boy, am I rusty... that issue was resolved.
