Wow, that’s amazing. I’m excited to see how AUS performs. They’ve been pushing for HNL service with incentives.

AUS and MCO came from waaay out of nowhere. I can't imagine whom is going to use the MCO-HNL flights, are they expecting alot of connecting traffic from Japan?

Is there an actual market for Honolulu-Orlando nonstop? This one is really strange.

Agreed 100%. If they wanted to shoot for something on the east coast EWR/IAD would have made more sense. Both have UA feed too.

There is market of local traffic coming and going to Orlando. Austin has been in the works for a few years now. ONT has been previously served by HA but was discontinued to begin serving HNL-SYD. LGB-OGG with 2nd slot awarded by airport authorities.

Kind of surprised HNL-AUS isn't a redeye; it departs HNL at 1000 and arrives at AUS at 2210. The plane overnights and the return flight leaves AUS at 1000, so I would think a redeye that arrives between 0700-0900 would be better fleet utilization.

ONT-HNL has long been on the wishlist for ONT travelers. When HA tried the service in the early 2000s, it was on the DC-10 and later the 767 and was put on life support when they tagged LAS onto it to try to fill the plane as much as they could. I believe they also tried it in the 80s with somewhat similar results.

This time though, I think it’ll be more successful since it’s on an A21N with fewer seats to fill, and much better economics. The route actually managed to stick around when TZ flew it before WN gobbled them up. That service was on a 737-800 and seemed more successful and longer lasting than HA’s past attempts, so this smaller aircraft, coupled with new economics should be a good add.

No, it’ll be amazing only if HA actually proceeds with service and it sticks around more than a season.

This schedule only requires one crew, a red-eye return would require two.

It will be very intere4sting to see how these perform. WIth Australia and Asia currently closed to Hawaii, this allows mthem to try and grow their domestic market, but MCO does seem a little odd.

Aircraft utilization is out the window right now until HA is allowed to service ALL its network (pre-covid). With no estimates on a return to international travel to Hawaii from places like Australia and New Zealand along with better quarantine requirements for Korea and Japan-Idle aircraft need to be deployed. I suspect once the whole network is up and going again there could be a shift in the schedule of these flights but until then-its the best they can do.

That makes it worse for HA. UA and HA are not partners on Mainland US-Hawaii flights (in fact UA is one of HA’s biggest competitors) and UA would just feed all their traffic onto their own Hawaii flights.

According to HA's press release HNL-MCO is one of the largest US travel markets without nonstop service. Who knew that was the case??

It would be nice to see the pre-COVID O&D numbers between these two cities or the expected O&D numbers post-COVID that led to this completely out of the blue decision.

That was my first thought. I'm wondering if they expect better avg fares on a daytime HNL-AUS, too. There's a fairly small number of daytime connections possible on AA, UA or DL -- most are redeyes (looking at a 3-day period in May).

I believe HA's focus has been on the local market and the income diversity of a growing Austin population base. Im sure there will be a wide range of fare classes focusing on those groups.

Too bad Australia/New Zealand/Japan & South Korea are closed right now due to COVID. Or else they can have high yielding connecting traffic from places like JFK/BOS to SYD/HND/ICN. I do know AUS (Dell + High-Tech industry) and MCO (Conventions, Disney, Universal) has paticular demand from SYD, AKL, HND, ICN.

No one is insinuating that Hawaiians do not travel.

But can you honestly say HNL-MCO was on your radar of flights HA would add? Or that you knew HNL-MCO was one of the largest US travel markets without nonstop service?

I'm happy to see HA expanding, but I honestly had no idea HNL-MCO was such a popular and yet one of the largest under served routes. I always for whatever reason assumed Disneyland would have been a more popular destination for Hawaiians since it is closer flight wise and fares to to Southern California are cheaper than to Orlando.

Not all that surprised about MCO, especially if the primary capture is from the island end.

AUS is definitely a shocker to me though, but glad to see it.

I am seriously ecstatic. I've wanted ONT service to the Islands FOREVER. Other than SNA, which won't happen, SoCal travelers will be able to fly out of LAX, LGB, SAN, and ONT. Its not quite aviation paradise, but its close!

Well looks like Hawaiian beating WN to the ONT-HNL punch. WN making some additional announcements on Thursday also.
I'm sure they will not be far behind adding ONT-HNL,LGB-OGG also.

The west coast parks are definitely nothing as grand and spectacular as the Florida parks so I can see why there’s vacation demand.

If Canadians can fill planes from YYT to MCO, an island with almost half the population of Oahu, surely HA have the potential to make 2 x week work from HNL. Plus they have Asian connection capabilities.

The airplane sits in MCO for 25 hours with this schedule. I assume that is for crew rest. That’s a long sit. When utilization picks up, that will have to change

Actually not too surprised about AUS, it was long speculated before COVID hit.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see BNA down the road if AUS proves to be successful.

AUS has been flooded with California transplants for the last 10 years and growing.
With Hawaii being such a huge vacation destination for the Californians I'm sure this will win the Hearts of many to have a nonstop to Hawaii.

Just a correction since many people on this forum incorrectly state this about ATA and Southwest. WN never merged with, or acquired ATA. They were separate companies that maintained a codeshare in ATA’s last couple of years. When ATA filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, WN successfully BID for - and PAID for some of their assets (LGA/DCA slots, MDW gates/hangar, etc).

MCO makes sense to me. It's connecting two large markets. People in Orlando want a tropical getaway and people in Hawaii want to visit the theme park capital of the world.

AUS I think is a quality add.

Long beach and ONT they maybe think they can deter southwest . These are odd times they can't just pour capacity on the same routes. Also people might feel safer avoiding airports like lax in these times , I mean they have to use the planes somewhere good time to try these markets I guess. I'm surprised they are back in long Beach but the outside setup there is built for covid

There are plans to extend the Brightline train from West Palm Beach to MCO along with plans to further extend the Brightline train to Tampa from MCO. The Brightline train would allow Hawaiians to go to South Florida from MCO once the Brightline train is extended to MCO airport and to the Tampa Bay area from MCO after the Brightline train is extended from MCO to Tampa.

Demand will also likely increase for HA HNL-MCO nonstop service once the Brightline train is extended to MCO with the access that the Brightline train would provide to South Florida from MCO.

I am seriously ecstatic. I've wanted ONT service to the Islands FOREVER. Other than SNA, which won't happen, SoCal travelers will be able to fly out of LAX, LGB, SAN, and ONT. Its not quite aviation paradise, but its close!

Never say never. With airlines getting creative these days, maybe WN will launch SNA-HNL ,or UA will jump back in.

No one in South Florida with enough money to afford a trip to Hawaii is taking a train to Orlando to catch a flight.

No, people aren't going to fly to Orlando and connect to a train to Miami. If HA sees a market they'll just add MIA-HNL. If these twice weekly AUS/MCO flights work then maybe stuff like ATL, MIA, IAD, DTW, etc. might be added in the future.

But the reality is they have planes not flying to Asia and need to utilize them so I don't see this as part of a longer term strategy.
