Person jumps fence at LAS, jumps on AS 737

Sat Dec 12, 2020 10:22 pm

So apparently someone has jumped the fence at KLAS, then proceeded to jump on the wing of an Alaska 737 taxiing for departure. Pics sent to me show the emergency exits over the wing opened. I believe is AS 1367 LAS-PDX. It looks like the plane is on Alpha-Bravo short of 8L. Thats a pretty good run!

I'm sure the news will pick this up soon

Sure it wasn't someone that popped the exit and got on the wing? Jumping on a 737 wing would be pretty impossible to do from the ground.

Was this person strung out on some drug that temporarily gives super-human strength? Mere mortals don't just hop onto a 737 wing.

If they were single engine taxiing, maybe someone could climb on to the leading edge by stepping into the engine?

Otherwise, they'd have to be spiderman.

Is it possible that he grabbed a flap track fairing and hoisted himself?

My buddy in Seattle. Who is an AS pilot said they would have had both running at that point. Risky!!

Here's a clearer video, includes him falling off the winglet at the end though.

Agree, don’t see it happening from ground level without assistance. Especially if he then afterwards isn’t able to climb the winglet without falling in his face couple of meters deeper.

I see a ladder on the ground right at the beginning of the video .. He probably brought that with him and used it to climb up. He really wanted to hump that winglet! Talk about taking airplane porn to the next level !

Wow, I hate to think if he had an explosive device, I am glad to see it's just likely a meth head, he did make it to the aircraft with passengers onboard. Unacceptable response by Airport Law Enforcement & Security breaches are obviously too easy. I hope that we can at least have a secure perimeter at our airports.

About 80 knots on the roll, he’d be blown off the wing or the FD comes over with a nozzle set at 200psi.

I saw that video via Barstool's instagram page. Pretty hard fall at the end. Also note the ladder on the ground.

I've always wanted a scale comparison of how big a 737 winglet is to a person when they are standing next to it. Guess this takes care of that!

Also that many people standing on the wing at once can't be good for the plane can it?

The worry is if they step somewhere that isn't designed to take a step.

But from a supporting the weight perspective, thats nothing, the wing holds half of the plane up in the air. (The other half is held up by the other wing...)

I heard he actually claimed up via the engine. I think the Fire Department brought the ladder so the officers could access the wing to arrest him. Apparently he crashed his truck through the fence? Hope they got the guy the help he really needs.

Those wings are built like tanks. I have seen entire sports teams have photos taken on the wings of planes. They did delay the flight and mechanics did a through check on everything just to be safe. There are some softer spots that shouldn't be stepped on, otherwise it's very very sturdy.

I asked the same question and have not gotten an answer yet. I bet the crew shut down as soon as they saw him? I know a 737 even with an idle engine can do some serious damage. I will let you know as soon as I hear more.

Did anyone have wing surfing on their 2020 Bingo card?

Not likely if the aircraft was taxiing. Even unincumbered, catching up to a 737 would take some serious hustle. It was most likely used by law enforcement to access the wing, as I can't imagine them waiting for air stairs to be brought out...

I'm referring specifically to the officers seen on the wing. I'm sure air stairs were eventually brought out to the plane for passengers/crew to deboard. I could be wrong, but I really doubt this guy ran up to the plane with a ladder.

*Just watched the video with audio for the first time and the flight crew can clearly be heard announcing that officers are boarding and need access to the over wing exits, so there's that. I still have doubts that this guy brought the ladder with him, but we'll know more soon. Perhaps it was brought out as a first attempt to get him off the wing.

That's what I heard too.

I suspect the officers were able to board the aircraft by pulling a vehicle up near one of the forward doors and climb in? I saw Fire there as well, maybe a ladder?

Any idea if the guy caused any damage? I saw the plane returned to the gate and left almost 4 hours late. Would love to hear the ATC and tower communication. I bet that was wild!

LiveATC has audio of it in their archives. Gives a pretty good play-by-play. Pilots saw the man and immediately shut down the engines. He was empty handed. The ladder was from the fire department, airstairs were brought out to let the officers board the plane.

Was it wise to have 3 unsecured LEOs physically walking on the wing to try and apprehend the guy? They could have fallen off the wing themselves.

I have to imagine that they were given a quick rundown on walking the wing/avoiding no-step areas by the crew. It's unlikely that this is the most dangerous situation they've encountered in their careers and they appear to be exercising an abundance of caution in the video.

737 wing is supposed to be low enough for the passengers to jump down in case of emergency (possibly along lowered flaps). So it should be ok for a fit officer.
Although should the guy attack and get into a close fight... In case if rolling down from the wing, I definitely would prefer to land in top of that guy, though

1) How did he get onto the wing?
2) What was he trying to achieve?
