Here's two reviews. It's possible their service has changed since then:

The inaugural back in January: https://thepointsguy.com/news/eastern-a ... al-flight/

EZE-MIA repatriation flight. Given this is during COVID, they likely intentionally reduced service: https://pointmetotheplane.boardingarea. ... nos-aires/

From what I heard, they're planning to refurbish their 767s with new seats and mood lighting, or something along those lines.

They did quite a few repatriation flights last summer and fall. I wonder if it gave them some insight into these markets.

Cruise Ships will be sailing with more and more people vaccinated. I'm not sure on the Canada issues however.

You hit the nail on the head with this - this is what kept them going through COVID, it also gave them the ability to test certain markets. ASU is a good example.

Looks like Eastern is cancelling SDQ route altogether from all departure points. The booking loads were too low, hence the reason it kept getting delayed. No surprise since that market is saturated already, which made no sense since the goal has always been underserved markets. They have already began refunding all pax and removing all availability.

I'll update with an article once available.

ASU is operated from MIA or JFK? I suppose it's on the 777?

ASU is from MIA on a 767-3 - and Correct, it is doing very well! It has already been increased to 3 times about 3 weeks ago.

Nice, thank you.
So what are Eastern's most frequent scheduled flights right now?

So, they have:

From MIA:
ASU - 3 times weekly
GYE - 2 times weekly
MGA - 1 time weekly

From JFK:
GYE - 4 times weekly

MVD is scheduled 2 times weekly once it starts in June
CNF - pending Brazilian travel ban lifting will begin in July

If ASU is any indication, they should do well at MVD, at least during the southern winter. The former was just increased to 3x week, up from 2x. Both markets have consistent demand to the US but not the high yielding one that makes for a profitable year-round operation for the likes of AA.

Lets see what happens in November when AA returns to MVD for the southern summer season.

Another route cancelled:.

Effective July 11th and after roughly a year of operations, MIA-GYE will be no more. New Yotk JFK - Guayaquil GYE will continue to operate.

The issue is Eastern cannot compete in any market with competitors. B6 got approval for a second daily JFK-GYE that will probably kill Eastern's yields on JFK-GYE. And, If AA decides to return to ASU, right now the 788 is too much plane, but I could see something like a MIA-ASU-MVD-MIA then what scheduled ops can they really sustain?

Once AA gets the A321XLR I can see them restarting ASU as well as LPB/VVI. In the meantime, Eastern is safe and sort of thriving at ASU. CM is also doing very well there - I think they just started their 3rd daily to PTY.

No they did not fly a charter once. They flew a huge amount of regularly scheduled charters to MVD.

Forgive me, I mispoke - However, they have not been flying regular charters - they stopped months ago, since at least September - and this is a new commercial route now.

IIRC some of the charters Eastern operated to deep South America (EZE/MVD/GRU - not sure now about the last one) at the beginning of the pandemic were to repatriate Americans. Once those were over, they pretty much stopped.

The LR and XLR versions of the A321neo can do both; MVD may be pushing the limits of the LR's range. EZE and SCL are also well within the XLR range. So are COR, MDZ and ROS in Argentina, which already support international flights.

MIA-ASU is 3,323 nm
MIA-MVD is 3,878 nm

It is canceling its flights to Belo Horizonte from Boston and to Quito from both Miami and New York/JFK before any of them started.

I don´t think the routes are far fetched in a non pandemic context for a non premium airline such as Eastern. There's a huge Ecuadorean diaspora in the NY/NJ area and the largest Brazilian expat community in the US is in Boston, with a lot of them being from Minas Gerais. I think the problem is Eastern itself.

They are a bit of a mess. But to their credit, they seem to have delivered on their promises and be doing reasonably well at ASU and MVD, where they are the only game in town if a non stop flight to the US is called for. I just don't think Ecuador will ever be a success story for them, having to go against the region's 1,000lb gorilla, American Airlines.

To be fair, LATAM has exited GYE-JFK as well and suspended BOS-GRU till S22. But yeah, if anything it should have only helped Eastern. I guess if there were more authorities available to Ecuador, AA would have tried JFK-GYE/UIO given their renewed interest in NYC.

The problem is these routes need 757/A321 sized aircraft and connectivity not solely point-to-point 777's. Eastern's plan was never going to work.

No they don't. These are bulk VFR markets. The planes are a non-issue. The planes are perfect for the most part, high density, low yield configuration.

I guess I disagree in part.
They are bulk VFR markets that need a 220 seat 757/A321 size craft.
There is no way Eastern will fill the 400+ seats on their 777's with their limited schedule and non-existent connectivity.

Absolutely true! Eastern JFK to ANC service would feed well the Ravn Alaska/Northern Pacific Air Anchorage hub - two great airlines, one mission! So why no codeshare? :duck:

The vast majority of their flying is 767s with about 260 seats, not 400+ seat 777s.

You don't need conectivity for stuff like JFK-GYE, MIA-ASU and MIA-MVD. It's all local traffic. They aren't going for connectivity, they are going for large unserved or underserved LatAm VFR local markets. And they avoid compeition - American Airlines tripled capacity to Ecuador from Miami, and Eastern essentially said, nope. Which I get, they can't compete on product.

I don't think we need to worry too much about the 777s. Someone had said upthread that they were having issues obtaining FAA approval to operate them. In the meantime both MVD and ASU are operated with the ex QF RR powered 763ERs with a more reasonable capacity to serve those two markets.

I believe BOS-CNF and JFK-UIO were both scheduled with 772's.
Too much aircraft.

Not sure if they were. Agree on BOSCNF, but JFKUIO is a massive local market that is grossly under capacity because of lack of open skies with Ecuador. A 400 seat 777 is not too much. There is far too little capacity on NY-Ecuador.

Eastern has canceled for 2 months ASU-MIA-ASU. Oficial statement: They need the aircrafts for Afghanistan flights. Just assuming that demand has gone as the vaccine tourism to MIA has ceased. Not sure why they gave such a stament ..

Eastern is still limited in its fleet size (by the DOT). Until it can expand its fleet size, its hands are tied.

The CMB contract and the operational reliability of those flights will be an important asset to the company.

Why are people defending the business practice of announcing routes they can’t fly. Their hands aren’t tied. They haven’t been able to finish their approval on their new aircraft type.

How much money do they have? This current situation has to be costly for them.

COPA has recently increased significantly its operations at ASU. That may have something to do with this temporary pull out from ASU. I can't imagine who would choose Eastern over COPA.
