It looks like UA is currently operating a 737MAX9 flight with N67501 from GYR-MCO. Is this a return-to-service flight? I'm surprised that it's not flying to a UA hub.

United has been storing their Max fleet at GYR. MCO is a large maintenance base for United.

Great thread, thank you.

Has the MAX been given a global "green light" to return to service or only certain countries have? I understand the pandemic in Europe is still holding strong, but why have they not been returning to service in the Middle East/Asia?

At the moment its just the US, Brazil and Panama.

One of Ethiopian 737MAX8's has been showing up on and off FR24 for the past couple of days and Silk Air 737MAX8 9V-MBA came out of storage at ASP about a week ago and was ferried back to SIN, however in that case I dont see it returning to service until surrounding countries approve the MAX to return for service

Don't forget that Mexico also allowed the resumption of MAX services back in December.

WestJet announced today it plans to resume MAX service as soon as January 21 pending Transport Canada approval and plans to operate the aircraft 3x weekly YYC-YYZ for about 4 weeks before gradual increases and other routes.

Any reason AS hasn't been included in the lists? They will place MAXs into service in early March in about 4-5 markets.

UA has a maintenance facility at MCO and they are doing work there not to take up space at the other hubs with maintenance facilities or that might be the only space that has room for the plane.

Southwest plans to begin flying the MAX for revenue service in March. I believe they will still be the largest MAX operator in 2021 once they do. Nearly 70 MAX airplanes

Alaska Airlines has yet to take delivery of their aircraft; therefore, the service will be new, not a return.

Well surely Silk Air would only ferry MBA back to SIN if they are expecting approval from their neighbours or for maintenance?

From MKJ on Twitter:

@BoeingAirplanes airline #737Max return #howgozit? @cirium data shows that today there are 26 (23 -8/3 -9) flying and 385 (350 -8/35 -9) stored. The latter includes 19 Max delivered since ungrounding (plus 2 BBJs) (pic @AmericanAir)

Ref: https://twitter.com/MaxK_J/status/1347228266608930822

So 7% of the fleet. It's a start, but still there's a long way to go. Should ramp up relatively quick though. Owners have lost Summer 19, Winter 19, Summer 20, Winter 20 but should be able to be ready for Summer 21.

Wow, 65 MAX 8s in service at WN by April. Everyday I go on FR24 and each day I notice more and more MAX activity in the US (As expected). Great to see the aircraft quickly returning to service, just waiting for EU airlines to begin their returns and for China and US to figure their issues out.

The YYC-PHX flying was reduced to once a week and operated with a Jazz CRJ9 now. YYC-YVR flying is all A223 for now. March schedule will be mostly A223 and MAX flying, the odd A321 one that’s it.

Every month I will do a summary on whats going on with RTS, as this is the first one I will cover the past 2 and half months

I have done up a spreadsheet which I will post in the next day or so.

In December we saw four airlines being Aeromexico, American, Copa and GOL return the MAX to service. 17 aircraft were returned to service. 742 flights were performed over a total of 1258 hours.

January saw the same 4 airlines operating with another 19 aircraft brought into service. 2553 flights have been performed over 5425 hours

February saw another 7 airlines return the MAX to service, those being Air Canada, Cayman Airways, Scat Airlines, Smartwings, TUI Belgium, United Airlines and WestJet. Another 42 aircraft were add to service. Overall for the month 4175 flights were performed totalling 9573 hours.

Up to the end of February 78 aircraft are now back in service with 16257 flight hours over a total of 7470 flights

During March we should see the number of MAX in service go over 100 with Southwest due to put the 737MAX back in service on the 11th of March

In Poland, Enter Air has said that it’s first revenue flight should be in middle of March, so definitely soon.
https://www.rynek-lotniczy.pl/mobile/en ... 10922.html

While LOT moved the 2 of 5 Maxes from Lublin to Warsaw, and the other 3 will fly to WAW by end of March. All will get a C-check at LOTAMS in Warsaw. So I’m guessing at earliest it will be beginning of April before they fly with LOT? Is LOT the only airline doing C-checks, and are they really necessary?

Aren’t the C checks a requirement for RTS after storage? All stored flydubai’s MAX aircraft will undergo a C check too.

So it seems we're having a pretty smooth RTS, no indications of large numbers of pax booking away from the MAX AFAIK.

It seems we need to wait to see how WN and FR do with RTS, but if they follow form, RTS will be a non-event.

FR needs to wait a bit longer for the 200 pax variant of 738 to be certified, so WN should be back first.

FR must have confidence it will happen smoothly since they just signed up to buy 75 more MAXes.

FG: Boeing 737-10 processes to undergo revision after EASA’s Max scrutiny is from late January. It's free to read if you clear out cookies first.

I'm pretty sure we reviewed it then, but a few things now stand out.

The whole 'MAX 8 is now safe enough, but we we won't approve MAX10 till it adds additional AoA integrity' seems pretty dodgy to me. it's hard to see this as anything but a concession to commercial pressure. How can MAX8 be safe enough as-is, but MAX10 needs additional AoA integrity?

As for "enhanced angle-of-attack integrity":

EASA says it asked Boeing to consider installation of a third angle-of-attack sensor, but the US airframer opted against it after evaluation the feasibility.

“Due to the legacy independent federated system architecture of the Boeing 737, the installation of an additional angle-of-attack sensor would require a significant engineering effort,” says EASA.

“At the same time, Boeing demonstrated the soundness and appropriateness of the proposed design for enhanced angle-of-attack integrity.”

This design included a combination of enhanced angle-of-attack monitors and addition of a manual switch to select the air data source.

EASA says it acknowledged there was “no formal requirement” for a third sensor in order to achieve an acceptable level of safety, and says the revised design is “more robust” despite having only two sensors – although it also acknowledges that a certain amount of functionality from the speed-trim system might be lost.

Seems we not getting "synthetic AoA" as a third AoA source, instead we are getting "enhanced angle-of-attack monitors and addition of a manual switch to select the air data source". This avoids the issue of dealing with the "legacy independent federated system architecture of the Boeing 737". To me the "enhanced angle-of-attack monitors" are just enhanced data scrubbing of each of the two AoA sensors, and "a manual switch to select the air data source" is just that, a knob the crew will need to twist if/when they figure out one of the two AoA sources are wonky. Seems like something that should not take two years to develop, no? Why not insist on better "monitors" right now, if they really are needed?

(EASA's) technical investigation during the Max recertification has revealed “several systemic issues” in Boeing’s aircraft design processes – which, says EASA, show that the methodological concerns surrounding the development of the controversial MCAS stabiliser-control system were “not an isolated case”.

The result has been a refreshment of Boeing’s safety-assessment and development-assurance processes which will be applied for the 737-10.

This makes me recall that one of the first thing the former Boeing CEO did after the 2nd crash was to order a full review of their design processes, and of course the outcome was that all is well, nothing to see here, move on. Now we read EASA saying there are systemic issues that are not an isolated case?

Seems like EASA's finding might cause Boeing some trouble as it tries to resolve the civil cases it is still facing.
