To comment on the last post in the 2020 thread, as someone who would love to use Eugene more for business trips to the east, connecting through PDX provides only limited options....it can mean two flights after PDX. If you're an AS frequent flyer, SEA is much better but options through other hubs (PHX, DFW, LAX) make more one-stop trips possible. DL and UA to SLC and DEN have that covered so maybe the Oneworld membership will drive that for AS / AA flights.

Hoping we'll see a return of the international flights at some point this year.

HND (start) and AMS (resume) on DL
FRA on Condor
YVR and YYC on AC?

KEF is gone, could it return?
LHR is gone for DL and BA

Unfortunately, Portland will probably be one of the last to return to regular international service. Can't imagine HND starts and AMS resume for several months, and it's clear that both require an adequate level of business traffic on top of tourism. Same goes for DE and FI, and LHR.

Currently, however, AC has been running PDX-YVR: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/JZA ... /KPDX/CYVR
AS has been operating SJD, PVR, and CUN in addition to Y4's GDL flights.

When was the last time PDX had no intercontinental service? Has to be before LH in 2003 I think. Can’t recall if there were any gaps around the 2008 crisis. NW/DL maintained AMS and NRT while LH pulled out if I remember. I’m only like 74% sure though, correct me if I’m wrong.

AS has been operating SJD, PVR, and CUN in addition to Y4's GDL flights.

Y4 sent in a second GDL yesterday. About an hour after the normal Saturday afternoon arrival.

Does anyone have any idea how long the AS Mexico flights will run?

HND and AMS on DL- I think DL will continue to push out the start dates for these. These flights rely heavily on Business travel, which is nonexistent now unfortunately :( Probably wont return until 2022 unfortunately. There is also very little feed for DL on the Portland side for these flights.

BA to LHR-I think this new service has a chance of resuming sooner rather than later as PDX will technically be a Oneworld hub when Alaska enters OW, connecting a ONEWORLD hub to a oneworld hub. But only once things resume to normal in the UK(new nationawide lockdown announced).

FI and DE-I dont think we will see these carriers return to PDX this year:( Hope i'm wrong.

I wouldnt be surprised to see Aeromexico return to PDX this year with all the Americans flocking to Mexico recently. Aeromexico has also reintroduced their 737 max to the fleet, freeing up additional aircraft. Daily or 5x weekly service PDX-MEX wouldnt surprise me.

Agree. With the huge OW FF base in both PDX & LHR, BA just needs to wait for travel to pick up. When people are ready to fly again, LHR-PDX is guaranteed to be a success. Given that AA is also planning to launch SEA-LHR, BA could start by moving its 5x weekly summer frequency over to PDX depending on demand.

I do think BA PDX-LHR will happen at some point but I do not share the optimism that some have that it will occur in 2021. Not only is the UK heading into a strict lockdown and the rollout of vaccines in the US has been extremely slow, but BA also recently cut thirteen destinations permanently and three until October 2021 as per this post:

https://www.airliners.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1446575&start=500#p22559013.

It includes places like ICN/KIX/YYC and so forth which are a bit higher up on the totem pole than PDX.

I can't see any scheduled intercontinental flying at PDX for 2021 but hopefully I am proven wrong.

Agreed. If BA can't run ICN then PDX isn't even going to be on the drawing board.

Also of note: the concourse connector closed today to accommodate the work on the space just west of the existing terminal core.

I am not sure that PDX and ICN are comparable, especially for BA. BA is weak in East Asia and is incredibly strong to the USA. Plus they have zero feed in ICN (+ competition from KE & OZ, both in competing alliances), whereas PDX will be a OW hub with numerous connection opportunities and no competition.

That being said, I didn’t mean that BA would launch it this year, more like S22/23.

A Cessna Citation 560 business jet with just the pilot and a passenger crashed in mountainous terrain in the Warm Springs Indian Reservation of central Oregon on Saturday:

https://www.kgw.com/article/news/local/ ... 2b411a1c5d

WARM SPRINGS, Ore. — Authorities say a small private business jet crashed in mountainous terrain in the Warm Springs Indian Reservation of central Oregon, killing the pilot and a single passenger on board.

Lt. Ron Gregory of the Warm Springs Tribal Police says officers were notified by air traffic controllers at about 2:30 p.m. PST Saturday of a possible crash in the Mutton Mountains on the reservation.

VASAviation of course has a video of the ATC communications:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkJ_I0USC0c

Listening to the ATC communications, the pilot didn't seem well, and the ATC picked up that something wasn't right fairly early on, but the pilot dismissed it. The pilot also didn't seem aware of the terrain, judging from the early reminder from ATC for a low altitude alert, to stay above 13,000ft, and to climb to 23,000ft.

In case you're wondering, both IDA & MRY are new routes to PDX. AS announced SMX, but not sure if they ever flew it. If AS never started the route, then SMX is a new route to PDX as well.

I don’t think AS planned SMX, they planned SBP prior to COVID hitting.

However, the two are around 34 miles apart by car.

Wonder if we’ll see AS respond.

They're both such niche routes that I'd love to add to my map, but just can't justify traveling right now. Hopefully they succeed and stick around. MRY might work the best of the three, but it's hard to tell because tourism demand is still so depressed.

I know it’s unlikely to happen, but an extra frequency on PDX-PHX is pretty cool. While WN has remained weak on this route frequency wise, AA and AS seem to be making frequent adjustments to PHX

Odd the Mexican destinations zeroed out for spring break. Hasn’t AS always served at least PVR/SJD during this time?

Not sure - seems even in normal times AS is all over the place with PDX-PVR/SJD. Also of note, looks like SBP won't be starting at all. Had been set to begin September/October, then moved to November, then moved to March.

Hadn't noticed SBP is 0.5 in June. Looks like the start has been moved to June 17.

Not really that odd. The US is starting negative COVID tests for entry into the country for all travelers. That's going to kill demand for international travel further until airlines, airports, and/or governments can put in place a quick testing locations outside the US. Of course this applies to other countries that are requiring negative COVID tests prior to travel.

After two years, the Southwest 737 MAX will be back at PDX. Starting March 11, the MAX will be on the PHX-PDX route.

If I remember correctly, before the grounding, it flew SFO/PHX-PDX. I am not terribly certain if/what any others were.

I would see the MAX occasionally on the PDX-STL route.

Nice to see some positive route news for a change. Kinda nuts. But it will be fun getting to watch them throw darts from PDX! Best of luck to them, hope they grow successfully.

Any idea where G4 will be located and handled at PDX? First guess would be by ATS on concourse D, but I am curious if anyone knows or if it has been announced.

That would be my guess too. Probably where SY used to be.

Indeed. Never would have seen PDX-DSM/GRR coming.

As far as I'm aware, SY is done with their PDX focus city "experiment", so I hope G4 will be more successful...

Definitely. Completely different adds than F9 and SY have tried.

It's not, but I appreciate you guys reporting ACV and CEC as honorary members, since we're isolated from the rest of California. In the case of CEC, it's Del Norte County Airport but operates under the auspices of The Border Coast Regional Airport Authority, which includes City of Crescent City, Del Norte County, Tolowa Dee-Ni' Nation, Elk Valley Rancheria and ... City of Brookings OR and Curry County OR. You guys started including us when PenAir was flying PDX-CEC.
Thanks!

Wingtips is correct. For many, CEC/ACV are closer than MFR, so I’ve typically included them in the summary. Same goes for PSC given its proximity to NE Oregon.

I think many years ago, when I was more active, it was agreed upon that CEC was indeed a city to be included here, as it serves much of Bandon South. I also agree that Pasco should be included, when I lived in Hermiston, we exclusively used PSC for the few trips we took.

The need to fly has come to my life, I am like 5 high risk catagories, I am unvaccinated & my best friend lost her husband & needs me to drive the truck towing a trailer. So I fly RDM-SLC-MCI on the 16th, I obtained N-95 masks & I am going to do my duty. Wish this guy lots of luck & good vibes please.

Not sure why B6 even bothers. Their NE agreement with AA shares nothing for PDX, and AA’s agreement with AS has only token flights to the NE, especially now with AS currently suspending BOS, EWR, DCA, and JFK in the short term. Not sure why/how B6 has even maintained 3 flights per week at PDX. What, they operated ONE flight to FLL in total, then axed it? B6 also didn’t include PDX as part of their LAX west coast expansion, though LAX-SEA and SFO have also been shelved for the near future. Don’t let the door hit you on the ass on the way out.

What does everyone think the future hold for PDX as an airport post pandemic? With so many routes suspended or dropped, how long does it take for Portland to get back to 2019 levels and does the current negative view of the city have long term impact?

Do we see BA actually start in the short term? Will FI return? Will Allegiant become a real contender at PDX? Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts.
