This is a list showing all 777s which have either been scrapped so far, are in the process of dismantling, were lost in accidents, have been permanently withdrawn from use, or retired from its last operator, or are in danger to never fly again. Granted, some ex-DL or ex-NZ 777s might be flying again, but its highly likely at least a number of them will not return to the skies. As 3 out of the 10 ex-Jet Aw-77Ws have gone to the scrappers (the latest built ones!) the future of the other 7 imho does not look bright, too.

I do not list all those Triple Sevens which have been parked temporarily or longterm due to Covid-19, and not been officially retired from their respective operator. I expect that most 77Ws so stored (the largest numbers are from CX) will come back some time. The list also does not include EKs, NZs 77W or other recent lease returns.

As this is a 777-300ER, even if an early one from 2005, the information that it will be scrapped needs confirmation. Same goes for sistership JA733A retired in December.

I’m struggling to grasp with the concept that 77W’s are being scrapped whilst Boeing is still delivering factory fresh ones!

It’s a real shame Boeing themselves can’t develop a BCF conversion program for these B777-300ER’s as this will surely be driving down residual values for the worldwide fleet.

A bit of "chiken-and-egg" going on here. Boeing cannot be seen as the first one to develop a conversion program for B777-300ER -- it's an in-house competitor to B77F, and sends wrong message to the market. And once someone else (IAI) already has a program for B777-300ER, the second one (Boeing) would have to enter competition with original B777-300ER conversion program. Competition means trying harder to sell. So even more pressure on B77F sales. correct?

Exactly. Plus the number of 77Ws being retired now and in future will by far exceed the conversion capacities and market demands. The 77W has been a great success and was delivered in high numbers as we all know, so if 1 in 5 will get converted it will be much! With the oldest being 16 or even 17 years old these planes are in an age where scrapping a widebody these days is not so rare anymore as it was 10 years ago when the first 744s were retired, 5 years older at average.

It's still a solid plane, even with the 787-10 and A350-1000 available now and the 777-9 on the near horizon so while the production run is finishing up, there is still a bit of demand left.

Boeing has been looking at it for at least a decade so I expect they could offer it if they wanted, but as Phosphorus and na both noted, the 777 Freighter program is still securing orders and has a decent backlog at around 40 frames.

I think GECAS' exposure (~50 frames with less-then-strong re-lease possibility) pushed them into IAI's arms when Boeing didn't want to move forward and jeopardize the 777 Freighter.

ANA has ferried two more 777s to the US desert for scrapping, making it 4 in 2 weeks:

Today Air France 777-228ER F-GSPV (LN 385) was ferried to LDE from CDG for retirement. This is the first 777 they retire, 3 others AF's 200ER are due to be retired by May 2021. This is really sad, I doubt these 200ERs will fly again

I read somewhere that GSPV and a few other are in leasing so this is a return to lessor.

The olders 200ERs like GSPA for exemple are own by AF.

That AF is retiring some 77Es is not a surprise. That the first one is one of the younger frames must surely be because of an upcoming major maintenance. And I wouldn't wonder if more than just 3 others will follow later this year.
I am surprised that BA hasn´t announced yet to retire some of their 77E Oldies.

Every retired 77W except the Jet Aw frames could be a candidate for conversion, but the number of retired planes by far exceeds the scale of the conversion program. There'll likely be much more than a hundred 77Ws which will be retired by current operators until 2025, dozens by EK alone. Optimistically, maybe one in four will get converted over the next few years. A few dozen will be snapped up by secondhand buyers/operators, but I expect half of those retirements to be dismantled as the 77W is simply too big for the typical secondhand operator in the coming years, and there are simply too many under any circumstance. Ex Virgin Australia 77W, VH-VOZ, has been sold (or returned to lessor).
And another EK 77W, ex A6-ECP, left Dubai for the US desert.

Yes, the light is bad for judging colors. But somehow it appears to be slightly metallic paint. Could it be Virgin Australia? Etihad?

As the article on the AerFin homepage says that it is already being dismantled, it should be either this one, or A6-ECL, which also arrived in December.

The photo is a stock image and not the actual aircraft being dismantled. The stock photo is of a JAL B777 in a Tokyo hanger - hence the lack of detail in the photo!

ANA is continuously ferrying 777s to Mojave for part-out and scrap. Now a 6th 77W has been sent over the Pacific.

FAA is mandating cowling strengthening for PW 777s following the UA incident - likely IMO to lead to more retirements / scrapping if the cost of these improvements is difficult to justify.

"According to Reuters, Administrator Steve Dickson has told a US House panel that the FAA will require manufacturers to strengthen the cowling (engine covers) on the PW4000 engine. This will mean that Boeing and Pratt & Whitney will have to work on redesigning parts of the engine and structure to prevent incidents similar to the one in February.

Going into the specifics of the changes, Administrator Dickson told the committee said that he wants to ensure that “the structure around the engine, the cowling and the inlet area, does not damage the aircraft structure."

Without privy to the lease agremeent, I am afraid I am unable to comment whether it was lease termination. However, 9 years with EK are long enough for them to turnover. This particular frame was sold to Novus earlier in 2015, could be one of the many earlier frames that EK sold and leased back. Hopefully Rossiya or some charter airlines may pick them up. Yes, A6-EB*series retirement is almost done.

ANA in Jan 2021 press release stated that they will accelerate retirement of older widebody. Out of 50 B777 in fleet in Jan 2021, 22 would be removed in current fiscal year. Current B777 fleet stands at 38, excluding those at desert storage.

Ex-Singapore Airlines 9V-SVF, Royal Brunei V8-BLA. Boeing leased out this aircraft to LATAM Airlines Chile as CC-BKB between 6 Jul 2018 and 13 Nov 2019 to cover for B787 RR grounding. Glad to see this 20 years old finding a new home, hopefully permanent one.

Does anyone know the status of the 3 Jet Airways 77Ws (OE-IIJ at GWO, N351BU at TUP and 2-TJEH at LDE) that were scheduled to be scrapped? Have they been completely disassembled and scrapped? They still seem to be "stored" as per planespotters.net

IIRC VT-JEX at MAA (2-TJEX) was the first 77W to be scrapped.

Can anyone provide pictures if possible?

All these 777s getting scrapped is very sad. I can't believe that this is necessary.

It seems like just yesterday Boeing reacted negatively when Richard Anderson said there was a widebody glut. Of course, I'm sure Boeing and Airbus love seeing these frames get chopped up, more new planes will eventually need to be built.

Delta won’t be able to capitalize on all those cheap wide bodies available now. They retired the 777. 10 year old 777’s would have been had at scrap prices.
