Only the A321-200 series would be suitable for freighter conversation (D-AIS* and onwards).

At least D-AISB - AISG ones.

Interesting, a temporary activation till A350s are available in late summer 2023:

Now as the global travel industry is returning to prior levels of activity, Lufthansa is strengthening its premium services from Munich Airport and will again offer First Class on selected routes. This means, Lufthansa is temporarily reactivating five Airbus long haul A340-600 aircraft with four flight classes, including the award winning First Class with eight seats.

Commencing in summer 2022, the A340-600 will fly from Munich primarily to in North American and Asian destinations. The decision to reactivate these aircraft is due to growing premium demand, for business as well as leisure travel.

In late summer 2023, the first Airbus A350-900, offering First Class, will join the fleet and take off from Munich, bolstering the premium offering at Lufthansa’s 5-star hub.

Great to see that recovery is happening and activity is returning.

Fantastic news! You don't just get rid of a solid workhorse like the mighty A340. The plane has made LH a tonne of money and hopefully will earn plenty more. Just months ago the naysayers were saying there was no chance of them returning. Hopefully premium demand can exceed forecasts and a few more can be reactivated. Fingers crossed for D-AIHB which I thought had a C Check at Manila last year immediately prior to being flown into Teurel for storage.

Can't wait for the flights to be loaded into the schedules so I can start planning a trip.

Before the pandemic began, the Lufthansa Airbus A340-600 fleet consisted of 17 aircraft, 12 of which are in the process of being sold. A further five aircraft are currently not for sale and will be temporarily reactivated and sold at a later date.

So the respite appears to be for at least a year - likely more depending on the delivery schedule of the A350s with first. Nice to see that Lufthansa sounds optimistic about selling the other five.

Yes, the market for soda cans is recovering too :duck:

I'm just jesting you a little bit :white: I'm very glad some A340-600 are returning to service, some are so young still. Quietly hoping IB will return some of theirs, they had the last build A346 in their fleet, luckily I was able to be passenger on that very aircraft only months before the whole covid mess started. But the chances are slim, I'm afraid.

Other way around: 12 to be sold, 5 to fly. Though I wouldn´t discount both the "12" and "5" to be variables for quite some time to come. A lot will depend on the market development, and I can see both going back to zero and going up to seventeen. Lufthansa´s CEO said a couple of days ago that they are currently de facto scheduling week by week, thus it will remain a fluid situation.

OS has again changed the order of its A319s phase-out:

OE-LDA was supposed to be the first one to leave in July, now OE-LDG is the one (it is already undergoing maintenance in BTS for further transfer).

OE-LDA - OCT21
OE-LDB - SEP21
OE-LDC - AUG21
OE-LDD - DEC21
OE-LDE - JAN22
OE-LDF - NOV21
OE-LDG - JUL21

I have been doing some research into the 787's which LH are supposedly receiving and there are conflicting reports.

On the 787 registry website, it says LN's 913, 955, 971, 983 & 1011 are the frames they will receive.

However, on the LH Group Fleet Website and on the 787 Delivery Sheet googledrive.doc, it say LN'S 887, 893, 898, 905 & 913 are the frames.

However, I have another theory, yesterday LN 990 (B-B20EG China Eastern) Was flown VCV-PAE. There are 5 China Eastern 787's, LN' 990, 1043, 1073, 1088 & 1100 in storage or neared completion. Could these be the actual frames that they would be receiving and yesterday's flight of LN990 was the start process to get the aircraft ready for service for LH with only 4 months until time of rumored delivery (01/11/2021)

Thoughts?

Yeah, those we're the rumoured aircraft and ones which seems to have been confirmed by the Lufthansa Group Fleet Website and along with the 787 Delivery Shhet google.doc

However, it was just a theory that I had come across as there hasn't been much action in terms of aircraft movements, especially with it being only a few months until the first aircraft is meant to be delivered.

My understanding, and what it say on the some websites, is that LN887, N1005S, will be the first aircraft to be delivetred.

I was merely just throwing a new theory into the mix.

Rumour: Austrian to receive Whitetail 787's

Mon Jul 05, 2021 12:32 pm

Good afternoon all.

A rumour doing the rounds at OS currently, is that, of the 20 787's the LH Group originally ordered, the initial four will be delivered to Austrian as current White-Tail 787's. These will all be the undelivered Norwegian 787-9s which are all currently in storage. These aircraft will enter service from autumn of next year (2022). All these aircraft are fitted with RR T1000 - Package 3 Engines.

The aircrafts will be fitted with J, W and Y. There will be a new business class product being released with these deliveries along with a new Premium Economy Product as well .

It is rumoured that these aircraft will be replacing both 767's and 777's, which will be sent to the scrapper from early 2023.

Yes, the initial 4 of the 20 aircraft they ordered in 2019 will be White-Tail aircraft.

I guess they have plenty sitting on the ground. They will have gotten a good price on them I would imagine.

The 5 you mention with GE Engines are certainly going to LH

If they take these white tales as part of the original order for 20 there will still be a new order for these 4 + a cancellation of 4 out of the original order. Simply because these white tails are sold with different terms then new deliveries.

Good for Austrian and Boeing if this is confirmed. Austrian does need the new planes, Boeing needs to get them off their inventory.

Why would Boeing sell them at good price ? they already have an order for 20 with pre-covid price ,unless these 4 frames are a top up order

If LH Group are acquiring a small subfleet of GE 789s, I would have expected that to be allocated to Austrian, with LH itself receiving a homogenous 20 x RR frames. Just a bit surprised.

LH has experience with GEnx from 748s though. It also doesn’t lock OS into GE contrary to rest of group if want to expand fleet in future.

Hard to believe that they swap some of their original 20s into white tails. More likely is that they got 4 more for a good price. LH need new longhaul aircraft and I don´t think the 25 787 will be enough for the group. 787 for OS makes sense and getting white tail aircraft quick and cheap even more...

Let´s see I can not wait to see the first 787 in LH livery as it is the first new Boeing type in years (decades) wearing the crane (747-8I is not exactly a new type ;-) - okay there is the 777F but it is a freighter

With LH and probably OS getting the B789, that leaves the A359 to be the most likely solution for LX now…

I highly doubt LX will induct another new wide body type into the fleet. At most the 787, but I doubt the A350 can be at LX. They’ll probably just go to LH. Happy to be proven wrong.

I doubt LH Group will order the A330NEO - they decided in favor for the 787.

In German news they mention 4x B789 with RR engines Norwegian ntu and most probably a top up order.
Source: https://www.aerotelegraph.com/das-raets ... nsa-gruppe

Imo it would make sense to just replace the B767 with B787 and operate 777 and 787 together. They have the same type-rating and the 787 is slightly smaller than the 777. And the 777 are not as old as the 767, so there is no hurry to replace them.

I don’t think you can say either way. I doubt LH group is stopping at 25-29 (depending on whether this rumor is additional frames or replacements) 787s. LH (the airline) has a clear future need for all A350s on order too.

Imo it would make sense to just replace the B767 with B787 and operate 777 and 787 together. They have the same type-rating and the 787 is slightly smaller than the 777. And the 777 are not as old as the 767, so there is no hurry to replace them.

The 77Es are as a whole not much newer than the 767s- the fleet’s average age is only 3 years newer. Eliminating the 77Es (and 767) also eliminates a fleet type from the group, although there is some commonality with the LX 77Ws and LH Cargo 77Fs.

The situation is very fluid. I heard that there will be additional A359s which will be leased and based in FRA, which will join next year. Probably ex Hainan as the 787s.

The White-Tails which are rumored to be going to Austrian are

LN955
LN 971
LN983
LN1011

All we destined for Norwegian, but never delivered.

So these would be RR powered, if I recall correctly? The main LH order is also for RR powered aircraft and the 5 white-tails already ordered were GE? For LH, much like DL, a mixed engine fleet probably makes little difference as they maintain both. They already operate IAE and CFM A32x, for example and have CFM and P&W orders for their A32xNEO.
