They probably don’t have any spare 77W?

Yep, none left. Every 777 is already scheduled. EK are making a big deal marketing-wise about the return of the A380 (hey, good on 'em!), but they actually don't have any other option. Yields can't be good, and the cargo space isn't huge either.

How is the EWR-ATH leg doing?

The outbound from EWR are usually 90%+ LF in the premium cabins and about 75%+ in Y. The inbounds to EWR were initially quite poor as the point of sale heavily favoured ex US, but are now about 5 or 10% less than the outbounds. It's very common to see EWR/ATH being overbooked.

I'm not sure what you mean by not having any other option? They could just not fly the route if the economics didn't favour at least a cashflow positive operation; there's nothing forcing them to fly the 380 on a particular route. The three US routes occupied by the 380 right now are generally flying 80%+ load factors in the premium cabins in both directions. I haven't seen any evidence that yields are being sacrificed.

Emirates is calling 70-100 furloughed A380 Pilots each month to rejoin the company, main constraint is the simulator retraining sessions.

Almost all B777 Pilots are back with the company.

Load Factor has exceeded 70% up from 44% last year. Some routes are reporting a LF of 100%.

An interesting use of statistics: if the fleet wide average is 70% and some have 100% LF then either a few have much less than 70% to offset the 'some' that have 100%, or a lot have a bit less than 70%.

I read a news item from Phuket sandbox about the loading on one particular flight EK378 on 6th July has about 142 pax (something like 2F30J110Y ). Assume it is B77W with 8F42J304Y, that is a LF of 40%. The rest of July is much worse as the numbers indicated 4,000-5,000 arrivals to Phuket in the first month of opening spreading among EK, EY, QR, SQ, TG and others. Also the return would be disastrous as mast arrivals to Phuket is long stayer and the first half of July would be close to low single digits on the return leg.

Then UK has a red list policy so that people fly via UAE needs to pay expensive quarantine hotels. That would depress loading flying in, but not so for outbound, as long as the outbound flyers come to UK via a amber or green country without touching another red country after 11 days.

Coupled with the capacity control going into Australia and effectively closed up China and Hong Kong.

It is easy to have very low loads to majority of Asia Pacific.

I wonder which cities have 100% LF. One guess I have is Maldives.

Airbus callbacks began in April, but I have yet to see 70-100 be called back during a single month. Just this past week they called back another 50, but I'm doubtful we'll see another callback for a few weeks yet. Hopefully Al Redha means the intend on calling back 70-100 at a time going forward.

The Boeing statement is factually incorrect. There were no Boeing pilots put on any leave without pay ("furloughed"). They terminated a sizeable number of Boeing pilots last summer, but none have been recalled and none likely will be recalled.

Today's outbound to HKT was 79% with J and F both full. Today's inbound from HKT was 28%. Noting that the flight has only been operating for two weeks now, it's not overly surprising to see such disproportionate passenger flows as the point of sale is heavily favoured to Europe.

UAE airlines won’t commence scheduled commercial ops to Saudi in August I think. flydubai for instance still displays, and will operate to; JED, RUH and DMM. Like they’ve been doing for a long time. But all their other Saudi commercial destinations have been zeroed out for August. I hope we’ll see a restart in 2021 but I’m skeptical. Especially now UAE and Saudi governments are in a oil standpoint dispute.

EK B777-31HER (A6-EGZ, MSN 41081) is listed on MyAirTrade for OL/S (Operating Lease or Sale) from BBAM with availability from September 2021 onwards.

Retiring after only 9 years, similar to A6-EGK which recently left the fleet.

I guess it would 77L , as it is the smallest in the fleet.

To further add onto your 'interesting use of statistics' point...

I'm sure EK is calculating their LF using the restricted capacity they're allowed to sell on any given flight. For example with their Australian flights where they might be flying 15-70 passengers a flight due to the arrivals cap. Most often these flights are operating at 100% LF, but that doesn't justify upgrading from a 77W to a 380. So even at a network-wide average of 70%, it doesn't mean we'll see many more 380s operating until caps are lifted. I could list out every flight that's restricted by some sort of government imposed capacity restriction, but to ballpark it, I would guess that over half of EK's network has some kind of capacity restriction imposed.

Was on the road on Friday and saw the EK 380 take off from ZRH. I wonder how full it really is? I bet EK cant wait to get smaller aircraft on property. As much as the 380 is a pleasant flight I cant imagine it is anywhere close to full on ZRH-DXB, even in good times.

Yesterday's EK88 had a LF of 93% with both J and F completely full. Pre-covid, the route was usually full in J and F, so I imagine that it will likely return to double daily 380s in time.

Some near term capacity increases were announced:
11 times weekly 380 to JFK
3 times daily 380 to LHR, increasing to 6 times daily (4 x 380) in October
11 times weekly 77W to JNB
3 times weekly 77W to CPT
3 times weekly 77L to GLA, increasing to daily in September
1 daily 77W to MAN, increasing to two times daily 380 in October
10 times weekly 77W to BHX in October

https://www.emirates.com/media-centre/e ... e-to-ease/

Over the last few days it was also announced that all unpaid leave A380 pilots would be brought back to line before November. Flight deck and cabin crew that were laid off last year have been encouraged to fill out an expression of interest to rejoin the airline in the coming future. Seems like things are finally on an upswing for Emirates these days.

Thanks, Airlinerdude, for this. "All unpaid leave back before November" gives me a little bit of hope that my family's November trip to DXB to visit my expat sister and her family...will get upgauged from the current 77L to maybe a 77W. I'm not holding my breath that a 380 will be used, though I can only hope for that.

Overall, I'm pleasantly surprised how much EK can grow back toward prior capacity. There is demand. Trade must continue.
This will be a challenge, but good to see A380s returning to service.

Out of curiosity, what type of travelers are driving this increase in demand right now, given that most international travel restrictions are still in place?
Leisure?
Business? <---- Probably not
People visiting family abroad?

And are most of these passengers quarantining upon arrival at their final destinations?

I don't know, I can only go by anecdotal evidence.

Expedia is seeing a rise in international searches.
https://thethaiger.com/news/world/exped ... big-cities
While domestic travel remains the preferred option for many, the report shows an increase in global searches, with international destinations outnumbering domestic locations over a number of weeks in the second quarter. Beach and city spots have proved the most popular, with Atlanta, Mykonos, Paris, Seoul, and Sydney among the top 10 most booked destinations in each region of the world.

Right now, we have international students returning to go to school:
https://dailytrojan.com/2021/08/16/inte ... certainty/

Heathrow had a nice increase:
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/heathrow ... 17100.html

There is a lot of leisure built up demand:
https://www.islandernews.com/news/keybi ... 9b124.html

I assume with all the shortages, that business must all travel to get stuff, but that is just my speculation.
Personally, a lot of people are just done with lockdown. There just seems to be an attitude to take sensible precautions, but get out there. I know people who love being a road warrior and they just want to do it again.

Emirates will receive three more A380 aircraft from Airbus this year with its last unit on order scheduled to join its fleet in November, bringing forward the original delivery timeline from June 2022.

As travel restrictions ease with the global roll-out of COVID-19 vaccines, come October, Emirates will have reinstated its A380 operations on over a dozen popular routes between Dubai and: Amman, Cairo, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Guangzhou, London Heathrow, Los Angeles, Manchester, Mauritius, Moscow, Munich, New York JFK, Paris, Toronto, Vienna, Washington DC, and Zurich.

https://www.emirates.com/media-centre/e ... -november/

It appears that EK has come to an agreement to speed up the delivery of 3 A380 aircraft. Final delivery of the last A380 produced will now occur in November 2021.

A few other operational updates on the A380 fleet:
- Currently, 34 / 119 (29%) of the fleet is operational.
- All A380 pilots on unpaid leave have been recalled and should be flying again by the end of October.
- The plan is to begin rehiring retrenched A380 pilots by the end of 2021.
- Resumption of A380 service to DUS and ZRH is occurring in October.
- Resumption of A380 service to AMS, CMN, BCN, BKK, GRU, HAM, JNB, MAD, MXP, RUH is currently planned for November.

- Resumption of A380 service to AMS, CMN, BCN, BKK, GRU, HAM, JNB, MAD, MXP, RUH is currently planned for November.

Thanks for this. It seems like good news. My family's IAH-DXB trip over US Thanksgiving week in November remains a 77L. I've been watching it in the event it gets upgauged to a 77W...no chance for the 380, I'm betting.

The end of November is typically when US traffic to/from DXB rebounds from the seasonal lull in October/November. You might be in luck with a 77W upgrade, but like you said, I wouldn't count on a 380.

The only route that continually sees the 77W as a replacement for the 77L is SEA for cargo uplift. First class has not been available for booking/upgrade despite the 77W having operated for approximately 1/2 of the summer.

re 77L vs 77W - 77L have had a refit if I am not mistaken. Newer product - correct? With 77W you have no idea the age of the plane. So since you can't in all probability get an A380, the 77L ain't a bad result.

Looks like all previous UK destinations are going to return with the exception of EDI which operated for less than a year before it was curtailed by Coronavirus.

I think EDI will be back, they were doing pretty well before they shut up shop, I guess with the lounge investment in Glasgow, it would be best to operate the flight from Glasgow.

Secondly the timing of the flight was a bit bizarre, it met connections from the 9AM bank in Dubai. I think an early morning departure from Scotland was needed to have 3 flights into the country - timed for different arrivals and departures- and EDI would be perfect for that, say a 7am arrival and a 9am departure.

Correct.

EK's ULR 77Ws are mixed. There are fewer new frames (A6-EPx / A6-EQx) and more older frames (A6-ECx / A6-EGx), so it's a gamble on which one is operating your flight on that particular day.

There are only ten 77Ls, all of which have been fitted with the new Business class cabin which are in 2-2-2 instead of 2-3-2 like the 77Ws.

I'd honestly rather fly the 77L since the cabin is much nicer.

Thank you, both of you, as well as Airlinerdude, for the info.

Separately, I should mention that EK's seat map shows a significantly longer Y cabin (5 additional rows, IIRC) in the center section as opposed to what's portrayed in SeatGuru, so that implies that EK just reduced the number of premium seats on their 77Ls. The third (last) section remains unchanged from SeatGuru, though, which for me suggests the same Y seat pitch of 33-34" according to SeatGuru, but 32" according to Kayak. I wonder which one is correct.

Emirates B77L have 38 J seats unlike the B77Ws which have 42J seats.

Yes the 77L is definitely the better (and 100% consistent as all 10 are the same) product when compared to the 77W.
The seats are the latest 'Falcon' design and are wider being a 2-2-2.
There's also the same number of J class crew as on the 77W despite there being slightly fewer seats, with the addition of the Purser continuously on hand (as there is no First class) so the service has the potential to be better too. It's a great 'little' aircraft :)

Does anyone know which registrations of EK's B77W are converted to handle freighter only? (Like cargo loading in the main cabin). Or are their 77Ws load cargo only in their lower deck as a P2C?
Just curious.

Looking at Emirates timetables around the holiday season, and it seems all US routes have been loaded as daily (with the exception of MCO/MIA)

A380 flights: LAX, SFO, IAD, JFK (3x daily including the MXP flight)

Thanks a lot!
Do they keep converting their 777s to a mini frighters on a regular basis? Or just these 10 a/c only?
