Qatar via DOH and Gulf Air via BAH are one-stop options. They are not in the UAE, however yes they would pick up some of the market as they are along the way!
In saying that, some of the return JMK-AUH and JTR-AUH are one-stop via ATH anyway, not a non-stop.

What do you mean Qatar and Gulf Air are one-stop options? they fly directly to the islands, unless you are referring to transit passengers from India, Asia and Australia or other countries..But then so is Etihad and Flydubai via AUH and DXB..I was referring more to residents of UAE and countries of Persian Gulf who want to fly directly and not via ATH..I don't know though if Wizzair's A321Neo fully loaded with 239 can make it on take off from JMK without restrictions since its runway is 1900m..

As you know alcohol is forbidden to muslims.
There's a massive social pressure for them not to drink, or at least not to be seen drinking, it brings shame to the family, etc.
So flying off to Greece, or other leisure places is their way of going around this pressure

Sorry, still not buying it. For decades they had no issue flying and being seen on Emirates, Qatar, Etihad, Gulf Air, British Airways etc., but now that Wizz Air is flying it is suddenly an issue? Why didn't they just fly Air Arabia, Kuwaiti or Saudia then? Where exactly do you find it potentially shameful to be seen checking in for an Etihad flight? They use general counters nowadays, nobody will know if you are going to Mekka, Athens or Geneva. Even if you get spotted in the boarding queue to Athens it means nothing, because Etihad codeshares with SAS, Aegean, Alitalia and Aer Lingus out of Athens. If anything, flying directly to Mykonos is going to raise more red flags than going via Athens.

Edit: I see that Etihad is actually planning to fly direct to Mykonos, Malaga and Santorini themselves this summer.

No they will fly whichever airline flies there, they were not ashamed to fly EY to Baku for instance, but now Wizz Air offers direct flight to leisure destinations and they will fly them,
If EY decides to also fly to Sin City, they will fly EY even more ;)
So in my view, the Wizz Air flights will be fully loaded, with expats willing to escape the summer heat, and also with wealthy locals who want to have fun!

I am also skeptical about that Mykonos-Abu Dhabi route on Wizz Air.

Mykonos is extraordinarily expensive. It is not Ibiza where you have also people spending 100k a night on champagne but you can find "cheaper" spots. In Mykonos there is nothing cheap because it is so small.

The only way I can think that route might work is that a lot of people on that flight use JMK as a gateway to take a ferry to a cheaper island like Naxos or Paros.

As a Greek who's been to Mykonos many times i can tell you it's not entirely true..Yes it's an expensive destination but you can find cheaper spots to stay and enjoy the night, depending on season and location..Don't forget that Wizz connects Mykonos (and Santorini) to cities in eastern and central europe where travellers begin their journey on a tight budget and not as ultra-rich visitors..It is also true that they can use the flight to take the ferry from Mykonos and visit Tinos,Naxos,Paros (Paros can be expensive too, not as much, but still)

With Air Canada making their direct flights to ATH year round from both YYZ and YUL three and two times a \week during winter respectively it will have direct flights to four North American airports. YYZ, YUL, EWR (Emirates) and JFK (Delta).

Not everybody in Eastern Europe is poor. W6 is the only carrier from Mykonos to Cluj Napoca or Gdansk. So if you are a well-off Romanian from CLJ and want to fly to Mykonos, it is a short 2-hour direct flight, or drive to Budapest or Bucharest + flight. Easy choice.

AUH is a different story because they are competing with Etihad on a longer flight.

Ah sorry for the confusion! You mentioned that from the UAE are QR and GF, so was just meaning that from UAE it is one-stop on those airlines to the Greek Islands.

And yes, unsure as well about the JMK takeoff. I'm sure they've done their homework though, fingers crossed!

I think they dropped these routes this summer to chase better yielding routes after the change of rules in the UK.

They did mention they will probably go back after the summer.

After announcing the open skies agreement with Armenia, Wizz offers flights from Vienna.

Wizz Air's first flight to Morocco:

Does anybody know the entry regulations of Morocco? The German foreign ministry says the airspace is blocked. Tripset says vaccinated tourists are recommended to have a Covid test and require a visa or e-visa.

Yes:

Currently Wizz schedules flights to Yerevan from Larnaca, Vienna and Abu Dhabi.

In 2019 and 2020 Ryanair scheduled Berlin, Milan, Rome and Thessaloniki to Yerevan. Let's see if these destinations come back and more are added.

I'm interested if Ryanair and WizzAir gonna fly to Tunisia. It's rather known for package holidays. And less for young people making trips through the country and staying in hostels.

Interesting article about Wizz and Ryanair:

https://www.google.com/search?q=Can+Wiz ... s+skies%3F

It's the first link: "Can Wizz challenge Ryanair as king of Europe's skies?"

It looks like in 2028 Wizz won't have A320 and 321 in their fleet anymore, only neos:

Image

and in two years already half of the fleet will be neos.

How much in cost-savings would that be (from 320 to 320Neo for example)?

Anyone know what bases that were launched during covid survive to this day? How are they doing in Italy?

Since Wizz Air is registered in Hungary and from what I can see all of their ticket income goes to their accounts in Budapest, anyone know how much they contribute to the Hungarian GDP?

This is an article from December 2020:
https://www.anna.aero/2020/12/02/routes ... c-started/

And one from April 2021:
https://www.google.com/amp/s/simpleflyi ... -2021/amp/

According to the article these new bases were set up during the pandemic:
Abu Dhabi
Bacau
Bari
Burgas
Cardiff
Catania
Doncaster
Dortmund
Larnaca
Lviv
London Gatwick
Milan Malpensa
Oslo Gardermoen
Palermo
Sarajevo
St Petersburg
Tirana

Naples and Rome were added after the publication of the article.

Wizz pulled out of Norway. So you could check if Oslo is still a base. Also check St. Petersburg. But even if there are no flights scheduled from the base, they may come back later this year or next year. The last thing I heard about Sarajevo is that the start of new routes is postponed. The other bases should be still in place.

Wizz sees potential in Italy after the down-sizing of Alitalia. W6 starts one new base after another. Here's an article where Wizz says something about Italy:
https://www.flightglobal.com/networks/w ... 27.article

You could devide the profit of Wizz of 2019 through the GDP of Hungary of 2019. Maybe that is what you are looking for :) Check, how company profits are put into the GDP of a country.

Interesting, thank you. So basically only Norway was shut down from all those? That's quite impressive if you think about it. Good for them. Will be interesting to see what happens to their operations out in the West where there is more competition.

You're welcome.

I just saw that St. Petersburg is still a base and OSL isn't one anymore. OSL was set up for domestic flights which did not work out.

Wizz got new aircraft through the pandemic so they needed to put it somewhere :) The bases can show if they are profitable after the pandemic.

For UK the collaboration with Gemma Collins fits. Wizz got an UK image from it instead of the East European image before.

In Italy they offer the Wizz Discount Club Italy, which cost less than the normal one. And Wizz offers domestic flights.

Currently there may be no base profitable because of entry restrictions, lower demand and lower load factor.

But that does not mean to close a base with international connections. Only if a base is not profitable after the pandemic, it might become closed.

Wizz Air's first flight to Morocco was from DTM this month:
https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2021/0 ... to-morocco

Also W6 continued to fly to Kutaisi from DTM.

You can see the flights W6 offers for the current day, for the following day and for the day after the following day:
https://www.dortmund-airport.com/departures

In DTM it's in the process to relocate the displaced threshold. So that the A321neo can use the airport.

Btw during the pandemic Wizz got 29 new planes.
https://www.planespotters.net/airline/W ... ldings-Plc

No transatlantic flights with the A321XLR.
There is surely enough competition as US airlines also ordered the XLR.
I just wonder that the CCO says, the A321XLR will be used from AUH to India. The range of an A321neo is enough for that. Cannot imagine Wizz gonna wait two more years to fly AUH<>India.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/simpleflyi ... 21xlr/amp/

New destinations from AUH will be announced depending on the Abu Dhabi green list:
https://www.google.com/amp/s/simpleflyi ... -list/amp/

This makes sense since London is a much larger and wealthier market. However it truly is impressive how well they performed in Luton over the years. If I remember correctly that was their first non-eastern Europe market they started focusing on.

Wizz continues to fly to Dubai DXB until Sep 12 from Budapest and Bucharest. Surely because of less restrictive entry regulations. Wizz does not serve the UAE from Sofia, Cluj and Katowice until Sep 12.

Alright. 3 weekly from October to March. For the Western European it's nice to have one additional weekly flight option for a one-stop connection to AUH ;)

currently from Western Europe to the UAE from about 60€:

This makes sense since London is a much larger and wealthier market. However it truly is impressive how well they performed in Luton over the years. If I remember correctly that was their first non-eastern Europe market they started focusing on.

An article about Wizz in Luton just came out:

In an interview the communications director said 8 hours flights with the XLR.
https://bbj.hu/business/people/intervie ... her-afield

That equals around 3200nmi. Like the route AUH/DXB-SIN. The flight with a widebody from SIN is around 7:30h. The XLR flies slower than a widebody and should make it in 8hours.

The XLR range of 5W around AUH then looks like this:

Abu Dhabi is not a major O&D destination outside a handful of countries - Etihad relied on connecting traffic... and (unlike Etihad, Qatar or Emirates), Wizz doesn't do connecting flights. We are not about to see Wizz create a superhub in Abu Dhabi on the scale of Emirates in Dubai. Wizz may be trying to portray Abu Dhabi as the cheap way to Dubai... but that implies passengers with money (ie the pax who can afford more expensive tickets will continue to fly direct from theie home country to Dubai

Right now, Wizz has yet to put a single route to India or Pakistan on sale, never mind Mongolia or Mozambique. Can we try to focus on what seems commercially credible ?

My post in this thread was not about the amount of planes based in AUH. Only about the range of the 5W XLR.

But okay, I bet with you that 5W will have 100 based planes in AUH in 15 years :)
That is one new based plane every 2 months.

In the 5W XLR range around AUH there are 5 billion people. Getting more wealthy every decade.

As the Boeing CEO said: "Less than 20 percent of the world's population has ever taken a single flight, believe it or not."
The number is smaller for people who have ever taken an international flight before

"This year alone [2017], 100 million people in Asia will fly for the first time."
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cnbc.c ... rowth.html

Ryanair offers protected one-stop flights on some airports. Who had thought about that some years ago?

Maybe Wizz gonna offer protected one-stop flights with a layover of at least 3hours. The price sensitive customers will surely be okay with that. Or kiwi.com and AUH make a cooperation for self-transfer like in BER and BGY. Or kiwi.com or Wizz offer a flight search with a multiple day stopover in AUH.

I see the UAE as highly growing destination country for tourism. If the fare is way lower to AUH than DXB, then people fly to Abu Dhabi and transfer to Dubai.

I'll take that bet with you :)
In my prediction, Wizz will not grow to even 10 aircraft in AUH. They won't venture in ISC so much, will stick to Europe and Middle East where they have a local presence already established, and that's it.

Wealthy people will fly EK or EY,
Not so wealthy people, arabs and asians, will fly Air Arabia or FlyDubai
Price conscious european expats will try Wizz Air yes, and that's it!
And UAE as a growing tourist destination, I don't think that it's sustainable for the long term, too many geopolitical risks in the region to envision long term stability at this stage.

what is meant with ISC?

This is how Wizz gonna grow over the next years:
Image

it shows that Wizz don't expect to get the XLRs before March 2023. Between April 2023 and March 2024 they expect to get 6 XLR.

In this current financial year 14 older aircraft are going to be phased out.

The picture is from this interesting article that covers Ryanair and Wizz Air:

ISC = Indian Sub Continent ... so the region of India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, etc.

and Pakistan to add to Miki's comment yes.

Wizz Air will grow, in Europe I have no doubt, but in the Middle East and in particular in AUH, they will not get more than 10 aircraft, that's my view again, I think their penetration in UAE is not great yet and their market is Europe centered.
Expanding East of the UAE for them is going to be challenging considering the competition and the market itself, highly labor oriented, requires special deals with the local travel agencies that Wizz Air currently don't have. (and it's not in line with their current business model)

In 9 years Wizz wants to have 500 planes. That is 3.5 times as much as today.

They want to reactivate the AOC of Ukraine. And also think about getting AOCs in the Balkan countries, and former Sovjet Republics, which are:

Moldova
Georgia
Armenia
Azerbaijan
Uzbekistan
Tajikistan
Kyrgyzstan
Kazakhstan
Estonia (EU)
Latvia (EU)
Lithuania (EU)
Belarus

To the Balkan belong depending on the definition:

Serbia
Bosnia&Herzegovina
Northern Macedonia
Albania
Kosovo
Montenegro
Greece (EU)
Bulgaria (EU)
Croatia (EU)

Especially the named countries not being in the EU could be connected with each other. And those could get routes to Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, Morocco, Turkey, Russia and Oman.

From Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, Wizz can do flights to India!

And from Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan with their A321neo to China ( ! ), Hanoi and Thailand:

Flydubai does it already ;)

even presenting a travel guide :D

In the Air Arabia app, Dushanbe is shown, but no destination can be selected so far.

Let's see which one will resist Wizz Air the longest, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan or Kirgizstan :D

I don't know, Wizz Air lost all its credibility with me during this pandemic, opening bases left-right-center with big announcements and closing them down after. By all means they can have wishes and visions to fly Georgia to China via Kazakhstan, but make it really happen so I can fly it.
They planned to have 250 aircraft by 2026, now 500 by 2030... even if you have the financing to do so, just how...? This is just ridiculous statements by the CEO... If you're gonna do PR stunts in the media, do it well, learn from MOL for instance...

I saw booking flights during the plague as a self-responsibility ;)
Wizz offered 120% of the flight price back into the account.
People may not resist the low prices of Wizz in the future ;)

I guess the 250 planes by 2026 is outdated then ;) In the linked article it's written that a new order must be placed in order to achieve the 500.

I wonder how many XLRs gonna be in that. I can imagine 50-80 :)

Meanwhile back in reality, Wizz Air announced a new round of cuts, this time at SKP, cuts will start in September.

Turku from 2 to 1.
Bremen from 2 to 1 (this one was reduced in July)
Hannover 2 to 1
Barcelona from 2 to 1
Gothenburg from 3 to 2
Malmo from 3 to 2
Nuremberg from 2 to 1
Vaxjo from 2 to 1

Varna is also seeing some cuts. One weekly in stead of two will be operated to Vienna, Barcelona, Berlin will be reduced from 3 to 2, Hannover once in stead of twice, Liverpool twice in stead of thrice, Luton 6 in stead of 7.

Wizz Air has also delayed the resumption of their Luton-Ohrid route from September 8 to October 31.

All changes are already in the system.

A typical Wizz Air oddity in Varna’s September schedule. Two Luton flights on Monday, Wednesday and Friday but none at all on Saturday.

They also based another aircraft in vilnius from December. It will be their 3rd aircraft in Vilnius but if I remember a while ago they used to have 3 aircraft. New routes to Reykjavik and Yerevan, increasing Luton, Dortmund and Oslo.

If they are cutting some places and adding new then I just think they are readjusting markets depending on market situation.
