Re: Southwest Fleet/Network Thread - 2021

I said this on another thread but I think LAS will be the key for getting Southern and Midwest cities connected.

Do a 7 PM Bank gets you back to SDF IND ect at 1 AM. I don't know how many people would choose that option.

Redeye's from LAS seam popular. I did LAS-CVG on Delta last year and I didn't mind it. I have also done the 6 PM LAS-SDF and it wasn't bad.

Thanks for the fleet update.

Well Just in case nobody else catches it.
By June 1 WN will have 78 total ETOPS aircraft.
That's A LOT of flying to Hawaii WN can unleash on this leisure travel environment.
Hawaiian and AlaskaAir can't be to thrilled about this.
If rumors are true that July will see additional Hawaii flights on top of the first June adds it's definitely going to get ugly in the Fare wars .

Enjoy or Don't
Flyguy

78 planes that’s insane what other Hawaii flying are they going to do ? The other airlines are in trouble for sure WN is coming for them I would imagine we will see even more destinations to Hawaii even if there less then daily ?

It doesn’t mean all 78 planes will be flying exclusively to the islands daily. Having a sizeable subfleet offers them a lot of flexibility.

True they might not use all of them but I would expect them to use a good amount of them

Well as of right now pending the Wiring issues by July 1 WN will have 28 unassigned aircraft thanks to the rescheduled summer flight schedule.
Now will they add all these aircraft just for Hawaii
Flying? It's definitely possible since Hawaiian is hurting financially. Then for first time in over a century HNL has the most available gates space thanks to covid and Hawaiian moving into its new terminal very soon.

Pre MAX8 grounding Tom Nealon did say he could easily see them operating hourly service between Hawaii and California.

Oh I’m sure more is coming. But I do think the gate availability argument is overblown. HA won’t be in a hurry to move especially if it means opening more opportunities for WN.

Well WN is very political and they will have no problem with putting pressure on the HNL Airport authorities to get more space.
I'm sure they wouldn't think twice to tell the HNL airport authority if HA doesn't want to use the available space at the new Terminal they would gladly move in.

Do you think that southwest is purposely trying to pressure the other airlines in too lessen there flights to the island or they just want to be really big in Hawaii ?

Let me correct myself WN is very political and would press the State Airport authority for more space.
Remember WN original Hawaii plan didn't include Inter Island flying at all when they passed Side letter 10 contract language with the Flight attendants years ago.
Only from a lot of heavy Hawaiian political pressure did WN rethink Inter Island service.
The political pressure from the state WN even agreed to add ITO.
So they have a great relationship with the State of Hawaii so I'm sure the airport Authority will not let anyone squat on gates.

Make sure you give my Buddy Big Ed a warm fuzzy hug from an old ramp buddy!

Aloha!

That’s how competition works... Force your competitors out. If WN can grab market share by slashing prices which force competitors to either cut fares or cut flights to a point WN can begin increasing its fare margin then I think WN will have achieved its ultimate goal.

Not sure on an official announcement but 8714 is sitting at C21 here in BNA with her ETOPS on the nose gear door and above the aft entry door showing so I’m going to take a wild guess it has been or is really close to being approved. Previously all of the intended ETOPS birds had them covered.

I don't think the labels on the NLG door mean they've gotten ETOPS approval. I remember seeing an -800 in 2016 or 2017 with ETOPS on the gear door. I'm pretty sure it only means it's ETOPS ready and has whatever equipment is necessary to be eligible for ETOPS certification.

Wnflyguy can you confirm they did get the etops today? I would assume they have it if the announcement of the new routes is still on for Monday

But aren't the airports mostly paid for with federal tax dollars given to the state for that purpose?

I don't think the labels on the NLG door mean they've gotten ETOPS approval. I remember seeing an -800 in 2016 or 2017 with ETOPS on the gear door. I'm pretty sure it only means it's ETOPS ready and has whatever equipment is necessary to be eligible for ETOPS certification.

Wnflyguy can you confirm they did get the etops today? I would assume they have it if the announcement of the new routes is still on for Monday

All I have heard was that today in HDQ they had a successful Post Round table flight debrief with the FAA.
I'm going to guess we will not hear anything from either WN or the FAA until Monday sometime.

Today the awarded Flight attendants bid lines posted on their work boards and several FB groups have been littered with all the new actual flights and times from LAX,LAS,PHX,SAN and LGB.

The cats definitely out of the bag just waiting on PaPa GK to officially announce we're keeping the cat.

That was prior to us actually attempting to get our approval. When we started attempting to achieve ETOPS approval on the -800s they covered all the ETOPS labels up and they were only uncovered after the approval. The MAX 8’s had the same exact thing happen to them when we started the program, they covered all the ETOPS labels up. With 8714 sporting uncovered labels I’m assuming if it hasn’t been approved yet it will be very shortly

The markings only tell us the aircraft are part of the ETOPS program, including the approval process. They were covered up years ago when they weren’t actively involved in ETOPS.

8714 carried the markings during the validation flight on Wednesday so they really don’t tell us much about where things are with approval.

Interesting to know they were covered in the interim. Also, not to break up the Hawaii discussion, but are some/most/all the -700s EOW? I'm assuming the -800s/Max8s are since they were delivered after the merger and Caribbean expansion, but I'm curious about the -700s, since they were delivered when EOW only would've mattered on flights to Florida from Texas and the Northeast, so I could see the airline forgoing the extra weight of the rafts and such circa 2005.

Not all the -700s or -800s/8MAX are EOW equipped.

The only -800s that are EOW equipped (with rafts) are the 83** birds that are doing the Hawaii flights.
The only 8MAXs that are EOW are the 87** birds, like 8714 which flew out to HNL. The 88** birds wont be EOW equipped.
Hand full of -700s are EOW including some of the early 9** tail numbers, along with the ex airTran and the 78** tail numbers.

3x HNL, 2x OGG, 1x LIH, 1x KOA. Seems somewhat reasonable - just a guess though.

Well SoCal LA/OC/SB is one if not that biggest revenue marketshare for WN. So seeing them going big in the Hawaii market from there caters to there overall Southwest effect leading the revenue market.

And If Rumors are true Both ONT/BUR-Hawaii will be added in July to further increase the revenue catchment area.

WN break even cost are so much lower than everyone else in the market so if they turn a profit on the market as quickly as they did in NorCal it's going to shake up the market.

Don't believe me try booking a ticket on AlaskaAir from OAK to Hawaii.

Not to mention LGB getting another daily flight so
That's 10 daily flights in the SoCal market.
Add SAN said to be going up to 5 or 6 daily flights also.
Then the 6 ish for LAS and PHX will also offer some connections to SoCal area that's a lot of seats to capture additional revenue.

And July and Aug are supposed to get additional peak seasonal Frequencies and some less than daily flights will operate daily for those 2 months.

Monday morning I'm definitely going to Have my Rapid rewards points and CC ready to snatch up at least 12 round trip tickets. Plus this time around WN flys cheaply inter Island so this 2 week vacation will definitely include some island hops. I'm going for paid tickets because Non Revenue gonna be hard this summer I'm going guess.

There are five other carriers with service U.S. 48 to Hawaii. It's a very fragmented market. WN isn't big enough to force meaningful reductions in HI service by any of them at a statewide level, although they might push somebody off a specific route. This isn't Long Beach with a lousy 1.5 million boardings a year.

Ya we usually do A huge family Disney cruise every year thanks to Covid 2 yrs have been canceled So we already splurged our points on the Disney resort in HNL when they reopened the booking with crazy cheap prices and fellow timeshares on OGG and KOA.
We originally planned on flying United nonstop via Chicago but when WN said it was going for Etops certification on the Max for summer time flying to Hawaii my gut said wait for the fare sale because the free check bags definitely make it more convenient than the Fees at UA.

It's definitely busy out there but still doable. I was there just two weeks ago and Waikiki is packed but we were able to get into restaurants and activities. That pineapple upside down cheesecake at the Cheesecake factory is insane and if you have not had one - do it.

For the record though, we did have our hotel and rental car booked about 3 months in advance. I live in Texas and once you get through all of the Safe Travels stuff, Hawaii felt very much as open as home. A few differences where I had to show the QR code but that's it.

That's why we went with Disney especially in HNL because they have everything you need without the hustle, bustle and covid restrictions of Waikiki.
After being mostly quarantined at home for a year we're definitely ready for a laying on the beach in Hawaii vacation. We also looked at VPS and MYR for a vacation spots but FL crowds seem so Anti precautions to covid Hawaii feels safer because their taking precautions seriously and that a huge factor in our planning.
Now add the new flights coming with a introductory fare sale it's a Win win.
Plus buying WN tickets vs UA is just a reinvestment on my retirement Stock with WN.

Now it's just a matter of getting to Hawaii Via LGB,LAX,LAS,PHX or SAN when the fares drop on Monday.

While all the chatter has been about Hawaii, will they finally start using ETOPS to SJU and the Caribbean? I know they don’t even use WATRS or GOMEX consistently.

I believe a few posts up it was explained that only a small portion of the fleet is equipped for overwater ops. That’s probably not going to change too much even with new max deliveries. But if destinations are added in eastern Caribbean or Brazil, WATRS routing would be nice out of BWI for sure.

Someone posted up-thread that the 4 ETOPS MAXs already approved would begin May 16th on existing Hawaii flights? Any idea when these changes will be loaded into the system? I’m flying KOA-HNL on the 17th so interested to see if my flight will now be on a MAX instead of a 738?

The Actual NEW flights posted on the page this morning. It's just a matter of WN releasing them officially for sale on Monday.
It's free PR so I'm sure HDQ isn't losing any sleep over the leakage since sale to fly date is under 30 days out.

Any chance you would like to post that information for those of us not on facebook?

What specific Southwest Friends FB group are you referring to? The one I belong to has none of this info...

Well I honestly don't know what's going on everything on FB and even some post on A.net have seem to be deleted this morning???
Self deleted or was it by the WN media police??

Hopefully none of the WN fans internal or external are chastised to much. It's definitely been a Hard year dealing with COVID and the worst industry slump ever. If anyone's like me all the new cities adds, new Hawaii flights, MAX7 announcement it has been beyond awesome.

Enjoy or don't

Wooooow, you're right! Just in the last hour, the references to precise schedules have been removed 'cause I was just looking at them very recently! TMI without specific references is my guess.

I guess we now have to just wait 'til tomorrow and see what happens!

Posting internal info publicly before an official announcement is pretty ballsy. Hopefully nobody got called to the principal’s office.

If it’s on Facebook already I don’t think it’s a huge deal.

Yeah it shouldn’t be such a big deal when all this info start to leak out a week ago and WN didn’t keep it under wraps or try to stop the leak

Well I guess its easy to figure out who reported the post..... if those users don't like what they see they probably shouldn't be on here.
