Man I forgot how stupidly small the bins are on the first tranche of A321s. I haven’t been on one of this vintage in 2-3 years, and they are gate checking bags even with middle seats blocked.

Has there been any plan to retrofit them with new larger bins? I know DL wasn’t happy that they didn’t turn out as advertised.

The official position was they couldn’t modify the order to a different non style so they continued taking new deliveries with the small pivot bins despite the awful performance.

In regard to checking bags on the 321 with middle seats blocked, that’s a result of not enforcing carry on policy, something they are incredibly poor at. You can bring on a house and they won’t stop you.

These are the worst bin of any. Space robbing when down but shallow and narrow. Getting off another DL plane onto these you’d assume they would accept luggage on its side but alas they’re too small. These devil bins combined with the numerous doors and small windows making the a321s feel like a cave is why I actively avoid any flight on one. Worst plane in their fleet IMO, I’m a bit sad they’re making this the backbone of their future fleet.

Going to try. It’ll be tough as those are fairly short turns and at hubs, so it’ll no doubt be a team effort!

This ship has been at MSP for several days, at least the beacon on a ship at the Delta hangar is for this one.

First flight is tonight, MSP-BOS
As of Dec 2019 I've flown 457,440 miles on 270 flights on 54 airplane types with 60 airlines traveling thru 104 airports. I've visited 60 countries.

Is that location doing anything else for DL? Looks like they'll be waiting around (at least to get this project finished) if not... at least until the last two 764's come out of storage. Seems like they'd need to get started within the next 2-3 weeks if DL intends to use them for the summer schedule and want a consistent product across that fleet.

There are no plans to bring back the 2 764s parked this year. So they have a consistent product as it stands now.

I tend to agree. Even though I'm on the Delta app and use Seat Guru I recently found myself in 26A and 13A. While the former is tolerable it's still a ways back and 13A basically is staring at a wall for 4 hours. I've been flying almost weekly since they blocked the middle seats so bin space hasn't been a problem but once the middle seats are open it will be a different ball game. My Platinum status will kick in after my next flight so hopefully I'll be up front for a good chunk of my trips.

Delta 757s without winglets?

Mon May 03, 2021 7:55 pm

N682DA flying DL1227 from RNO to ATL just diverted to CHA thanks to the storms in ATL today and I had the pleasure of getting to spot it on approach. I noticed this bird does not have winglets which I thought was pretty rare for a Delta 757. So my question for the Delta fleet experts: Is there a reason this particular bird didn't get them? Also, how many DL 757s don't have winglets?

TIA for your replies!

There were a few DL 757 aircraft that did not get winglets for various reasons. For some, fuel had dropped significantly and the ROI for the estimated remaining airframe life was seen as negative. I know there is a handful of mainline DL 757 aircraft without winglets and all 11 of the NBA charter aircraft have no winglets.

I did a quick search on Planespotters.net: https://www.planespotters.net/airline/Delta-Air-Lines. Outside of the charter jets, it looks like there's a handful of 757-200s without winglets.

Ships 668, 671, 673, 674, 675, 676, 678, 679, 680, 681, 682, 683, 684, 697, 698, and 6716 are all sans winglets in regular passenger service.

As for your question, IIRC there was something about wing strengthening I read about that negated the benefit of winglets. I could be wrong. Hope this helps somewhat.

Recently I flew on N901DN, one of the last batch of brand new -900ERs for Delta. I noticed that this particular plane, along with N903DN didn’t have any Scimitar Winglets. Is there any reason behind this?

Great that DL is installing Premium Select on the 767-300ER and A330-200/300CEOs. Sad they are leaving the Delta One seats in place though on these jets. They aren't particularly comfortable, narrow, and look very dated compared to the newer seats on the A330-900s, A350s, and 767-400ERs. I guess with the 763 fleet being exited by 2025, it makes sense, but it's too bad.

Despite the -400er One cabin updated with new "suite like" design and allover all-new materials, including the much larger IFE screens, aren't the seats actually the same type as current D1 763er lay flats that people say are too small?

The 1Q2021 10-Q showed 36 763s in the current fleet, down from 56 in 3Q2019. Seat commonality across the 120+ widebody fleets each of AA/DL/UA, ranging from new to 25+ years-old, just isn't practical. Maybe positive free cash flow will bring a new seat to the 332s and 333s eventually. I don't recall too many complaints about the herringbone aisle-access J seats of the A330s, frankly.

There are I believe 7 -900s that do not have SSWs. The cut in for SSWs was N832DN, and there are 2 that below that cutoff that haven't gotten them.

In the case of the other 5 later models like you flew, there was a supplier issue that caused these ships to not receive them. These are aftermarket winglets, so they are installed after delivery. The plan is to eventually retrofit these frames with them later on this year.

I've seen that the DeltaOne seat will be "refreshed". That can mean a lot though. Refreshed seats can look brand new and actually have a lot of hardware modifications but not sure the level of investment Delta did for this.
