I'm curious why N823DX, the last produced 757-200 is currently being stored by Delta. It flew during the pandemic so I don't see it being related to that. Has a new interior as well, just curious if anyone has any knowledge why it's stored, and if it's for something temporary or permanent.

With absolutely no knowledge. I would assume it needs heavy maintenance but there’s other birds that need it first. The heavy maintenance facilities for the Us3 are full at the moment and have been for some time. I would assume it’s just stored for the time being and it’ll be back when there’s a chance to slip it into the maintenance schedule.

Query whether it's really being "stored". DL does 757 maintenance in QRO, and it's only been there about 10 weeks. Perhaps it hit a hard deadline (hours/cycles) and was flown there to be worked on when a slot was available. Summer's over, so a little more slack in the fleet, and if it went in on July 1 for a C-check, it probably wasn't coming out until summer peak would be essentially-over, anyway, even if it had been slipped straight in. There are a few 757s that are actually at places where DL stores, but does not work on, aircraft, and those are expected to return as well.

I think RyanFlyer's instincts are likely-correct.

More reasons to keep a younger aircraft than an older one flying assuming they aren't being slated for retirement soon and aren't trying to defer having to do a C or D check on them, regardless of age.

Side note, I'm surprised anytime an aircraft goes past 30 years; it's like being 100 IMO (unless it's cargo). Surely by that time it has already accumulated close to its max amount of cycles or hours?

6823 is at QRO awaiting a mx slot. It's not stored like those in VCV, for example.

A fact and an observation: It's the last B757 built in April 2005...it also doesn't have "DELTA" and the Widget on the underbelly when it was painted in 2016, though other aircraft at that time were already being repainted/delivered with the underbelly painted AFAIK!

Anyone know what the deal is with N305DQ, one of the retired 737-700s? Ferried to TPA the other day as DL9937. I would guess that it’s going there for maintenance before heading to a new carrier (wasn’t there talk about Avelo getting these?), but the ferry was under a Delta flight number, which seemed strange

It ferried in with titles blanked out, rudder still showed the DL widget. It is currently inside the Airborne North hangar. Small chance it may get a cargo conversion, we'll keep an eye on it.

Good question. There is likely to be a 9/30/21 active fleet count in the 8-K and/or 10-Q filings in less than three weeks. If they have decided to push out 763 retirements that should also be noted.

The last sort messaging regarding the 717 to get up to an active fleet of ~65 frames for Summer 2022.

The fleet is at 53 active, and 9565 takes it to 54. The active fleet was down to ~45 at the depth of COVID and there have been a slow trickle of 717s out of storage at about 1 a month since the beginning of the year.

I seem to remember seeing a post stating around 10-11 would be coming out of storage (timeframe TBD), so that would line up with the ~65 total noted by PSU.DTW.SCE above.

The 717s are obviously used on relatively high cycle missions and were so before their purchase by Delta. The common reputation, however accurate based on a variety of factors, of these dc-9 variants is their potentially extensive service life. Obviously that doesn't mean they are cost-efficient but how much life do these aircraft realistically have left if cost and engine mx are not an issue? Could they, theoretically, be flown until the late 2020s and into 2030? I don't expect that as DL appears to be putting its eggs in up-gauging and I seem to remember the 717s had some sort of AD in regard to their seats?

Economics retires a lot of aircraft before hours or cycles do. I'm not expecting DL to walk back the December 2025 retiremement date, but if they do, there could be a partial reversal of the impairment charge for all the world to see.

Wonder if that's a mistake or if those seats have extra room for some reason and the left side equivalent seats don't have it? They are not noted as preferred on the non-PS version of the 332.

Very good catch on the bizarre designation in rows 45-47 H and J as preferred. The only thing I could think of would be flight attendant rest seats that sell as preferred because of added leg room. But why would there be rest seats mid-cabin? And this bird might even have a bunk room - so I am not sure if it has rest seats. Also, as a former UA flight attendant, I would have loved to work this aircraft in coach because all the lavs are separate from the galleys. So much easier to serve when there isn't a line in the galley!

Delta's fleet numbering system is consistent across aircraft types and usually corresponds to the tail number in some fashion (excluding some second hand aircraft), unlike the jumble of subsidiary fleets and subtypes at UA and the alphanumerics at AA. I'm not sure about others here but I still use a modified version of the old spreadsheet created by pilotboi to track the fleet, and that's sorted by fleet number. All this makes using the fleet numbers most convenient.

Re the posts above, it's frankly easier/faster (does take a slight bit of getting used to) to use the fleet # vs tail (and particular easier to do one vs both fleet and tail).
