Why would they being doing that? Purchased for parts?

Reducing the debt (lease) burden / interest expense where possible?

Yes, planning to do so once they are in mods (think those haven't started yet...just re-registration). Same with the additional 739s.

Anyone know why the 717 fleet is all screwed up going through ORD today? The 9am left 9 hours late. Now they are running two hour delays on the three final flights of the day. Looks like 3 different aircraft are involved. The 3pm and 9pm flights are the same bird which is just carrying a delay through. But the 9am and 5:30pm were two different birds. Are they short staffed for pilots on the 717? Weather is good at ORD, MSP, DTW, and ATL - so shouldn't be anything systemic with ATC.

I don't know the exact details but here is what I can surmise:

717 pilot bases are ATL & DTW. There is no longer an MSP 717 pilot domicile.
ORD has 717 flights to DTW and MSP. No 717s are flown on ORD-ATL currently as its all larger gauge A320/A321 flying.
As DL has recently restored a small number of 717 flights from MSP, primarily to routes like ORD, MCI, MSN, MKE the flying is typically "bridged" from DTW and flown with DTW-based pilots. Frames also tend to rotate through the network over these bridge cities to DTW and ATL (MSN is the "bridge" to ATL flying).

With that in mind, MSP doesn't have any 717 reserve crews as would have to deadhead in crews from either ATL or DTW to cover any IROP 717 flying.

9502 N942AT was scheduled to operate:
1283 MSP-ORD 0625 0802 (a launch flying, operated by a crew that overnighted in MSP); operated on time
1283 ORD-MSP 0857 0907 (appears to have gone tech at ORD)

Thus now you have what appears to have been a 717 in ORD go AOG and now with a busted downline rotation in MSP where that aircraft and crew would have gone on to do downline flying. From here on out on its no whatever SOC wants to do to cover the downline 717 flying out of DTW and horse-trade aircraft and crews to best cover what they can. Its likely that the crew stuck in ORD was to have eventually ended-up back in DTW. Probably needed to get a replacement crew in at some point to fly the aircraft once fixed.

Things just cascaded from there it appears. These things tend to happen if you have a broken airplane at an outstation, small fleet types, and have to perhaps get reserve crews.

You've give a fine outline as to why fleet simplication has benefits to operational reliability.

Thanks so much for the informative post. I forwarded the info to my friend who was stuck in the ORD Skyclub last night confused about why the 9am flight was just rolling out at sunset. People are so worried these days about the labor shortage that they think every delay is a sign of a systemwide meltdown.

The 90 second delays on most of those later flights were most likely the result of swapping crews and planes at MSP once they lost that outbound at O'Hare. Overall it was a relatively good recovery for a small fleet with bases on neither end of where the irregularity took place.

Endeavor bringing retired CRJ-200s back into service for the upcoming travel season? N8783E is en route from IGM to CWA, presumably for RTS maintenance there, as EDV5556. Flew to IGM in September, would have guessed that would be the end.

A few were temporarily parked in September for staffing reasons. It wouldn't surprise me to see a few more come back as they can get staffing back up to operate them.

Thanks, that makes sense. Guess they’ve sorted some of the issues out

Also, 1521 (N394DL) ferried ATL-BHM as DL9936 this afternoon, guessing this is temp storage prior to mx/mods

Does anyone know if some of the newer 757s (6700 series) are being ETOPs certified? I thought I saw one recently.
