Interesting to note that July 2019 had 113K passengers to Caribbean and July 2018 had 96K.

A few weeks ago DL loaded a bunch of tropical flying but filed to remove the weekly BOS-PLS today in the face of AA being almost daily on it throughout the winter.

PLS is absolutely jammed during the busy travel season. I operated a weekend turn from EWR this past spring and had a 3 hr EDCT going DOWN to the islands on a sunny Saturday, with no weather anywhere east of the Mississippi. There’s no parallel taxiway there (I.e. back taxi is the only way to vacate the runway after landing), a tiny ramp considering how many large mainline flights, no radar, and a single controller operating approach, tower and ground frequencies there. In the case of PLS, less is more.

How is the Caribbean stuff doing from your perspective? I know EWR and BOS are pretty similar in size now for Caribbean markets.

This spring/summer I’ve done SJU, SDQ, PUJ, MBJ, KIN, PLS, NAS and CUN. All from various markets along the eastern seaboard as well as the southeast interior. It’s been like nothing I’ve ever seen before in terms of loads. No matter the day, nor time of day. Full from everywhere.

Good afternoon all

Driving by Logan last night on the way home I saw a Condor 767-300 parked near the new International extension. Anyone have any idea what he is doing here?

I think this was the first time I have seen Condor in Boston

thanks

You sure it was Condor?

I was over there last night and to my knowledge the only unusual visitor was a CargoJet 762 filling in for DHL.

But it’s very well possible I missed it. I wasn’t exactly they to do my own spotting!

Well I stand corrected!

Hate to say you tune these things out at work when I’m on an enthusiast website…but it wasn’t mine to worry about so I didn’t!

Just watching that KE 77w taxi out now though. That livery looks good on anything, I swear

It looks like Cathay Pacific has been operating daily flights to Boston with their A350-X for the past 2 weeks. Are these flights temporary (bringing students) or is CX restarting their daily service?

Heads up everyone- Air Canada is operating a B777-300ER on a HKG-BOS routing. It is arriving in BOS on Saturday morning (28Aug21) and it is a live flight. Flight number is AC2211. I think they will be using gate E12.

Anything to do with Afghan refugees?

I don’t believe so. I think it’s more of a charter for students returning to the area.

On 8/21 I got to fly the first Delta A350 out of Boston. This was DL1014 (to SLC) and it was originally supposed to be an A333 but there was a mechanical issue that could not be resolved. Our flight was delayed about 12 hours. The A359 flew in empty from Detroit, N506DN. It took the staff in Boston a while to figure out how to get the jet bridge high enough to get to L1. I may get around to posting a TR in a few days.

I believe it was supposed to start last summer, pushed off due to covid, and is now a regular service. Delta is building up a pretty decent sized a330 operation out of Boston.

The a350 jet bridge confusion is interesting. Raising/lowering bridges is extremely simple, and the 350 isn’t that much higher than a 330.
Where it gets complicated is you aren’t supposed to touch the aircraft on the new composite types.

Given how jerky most bridges are, it takes a little fine tuning to get close enough to disembark safely without making contact

Regarding the jet bridge, I find it odd too. On the ground, A350 was already painted on the concrete, and that's what they pulled up to. They originally tried to use L2 but it wouldn't work so they used L1. It was the first time I walked up hill to the plane from the airport. They had about eight people trying to figure out the nose wheel/push back procedure too.

DL doesn't typically fly A350's into BOS so I suspect that the ground crew might be a little inexperienced in the type and/or they probably used the event as a training exercise which in itself is slower and more methodical.

In my experience, this is probably it. Whenever my company handled a new type, the mechanics especially would dote over every inch of the aircraft, invite other mechanics, and the ramp managers would make sure everyone got a chance to familiarize themselves a bit.

I never fully understood the excitement, but again, I work at E where we’ve had everything from dash 8s to a380s parked side by side, so we’re a bit more exposed to variety

While I love the Queen, the LH 340s with the downstairs bathrooms are great for passengers. But the business class is really outdated.

The 340-600's have those bathrooms, but I'm not sure if the -300's have them as well.

JetBlue’s BOS hub (focus city is what they call hubs) has been around for over 10 years.

The A346's have been retired and the 744's are as good as gone at this point. Only 1 744 has flown in the last 7 days according to FR24, D-ABVX. The rest are stored. And you're right, it's the -600's that have the bathrooms downstairs. The A346's were arguably the best long haul airplane I have ever flown in in terms of comfort. It was as smooth and quiet as it can be. I have yet to fly on an A380 tho.

You know what, I didn’t even think about the difference between the -300 and -600.

Good catch!

Yeah that's the downside of the new terminal extension. It pretty much spells the end of aircraft watching on the ramp. I suspect the only place now may be the top floor of the remote parking garage.

Might be able to see over it from the top floor of central, but it’d be a limited view.

Just a quick update on this. Tried out the top of the central parking garage the other day and nothing. Completely blocked. Only terminal C is now visible from there.

Heres a pic of the new Terminal E construction from last weekend. Took it from the parking garage when I got back.

If this is a pandemic you certainly wouldn’t know judging by how packed terminal E was tonight. Flying out on KL618 which is totally full. At E4 is IB to MAD and at E6 is QR to DOH. This corner of terminal E with 3 wide body aircraft at the same time and seating collectively over 600 people is totally inadequate for that many people. Absolute cluster.

On another note - the AirFrance lounge was a nightmare. AF canceled their BOS-CDG flight so all those passengers that normally depart at 5pm were still there + KL passengers + IB passengers + PriorityPass customers. No seating, no food, awful awful environment. Why would IB not use partner BA’s lounge?

Only two food vendors open in the terminal. Lines down the hallway waiting for a table at Stephanie's or to-go at Monica’s. Why do they not open more options?

Half of the check-in counters (to the right of security) we’re all closed so everyone was crammed into the other side. The international extension cannot open fast enough.

While I love the Queen, the LH 340s with the downstairs bathrooms are great for passengers. But the business class is really outdated.

The 340-600's have those bathrooms, but I'm not sure if the -300's have them as well.

LH announced more 744s coming back next year, so they’re not “as good as gone.”

That is bizarre since they are first and foremost owned by the same company. Also I remember getting BA lounge access flying in F on CX . It was a good use of AAdvantage miles!!

I believe BA only runs their lounge for their own flights at the moment. So not open for any outside customers (yes, when it comes to lounges even partner airlines are customers)

That corner of the terminal still gets packed, but it used to be so much worse. E3 used to be up there, and there was the elevator directly in front of E5 podium

That said…I still don’t understand why the food vendor hasn’t reopened much.

AF lounge is a COVID nightmare. Never set a foot in there!

FGITD - Any idea what happened to AF333 last night? Looks like they swapped the scheduled 789 for a 77W on the inbound but then the return canceled. Saw the 77W parked over by North Cargo/general aviation area. Assuming it was a mx issue?

Seems that a stray CX A350 has been on campus for a couple of days now ...

Was very quiet at immigration this afternoon. Used Global Entry but could have used the regular line instead. One way or the other, you still have to wait 15 minutes for bags to arrive.

The terminal E expansion has space for 3, or 4 airline clubs. It will be interesting to see who grabs them? Based on plans I saw a while back, they will have more space than the current BA, LH, and EK clubs.

I pray AF/KL go in together to build a new club at BOS. So many airlines (AF, KL, IB, KE, QR + PriorityPass) use that small basement club. They should have plenty of motivation to expand.

Perhaps TK would open a club in BOS?

I also wondered if maybe FI would open a Saga lounge. They were up to 3-4 flights a day to KEF.

From personal experience, TK uses the Star Lounge on the top floor in the new wing.

I don’t know what the plan is anymore, but pre-covid the lounges were spoken for. These days…not so much.

The thing about lounges is that they are massively expensive to lease and operate. Staffing, catering, cleaning etc all outsourced but costly. Plus the fees, and the time attributed to running the lounge. Most of the foreign carriers in BOS have minimal staff, and a lounge requires so much more work to keep everything running. Usually you need a manager dedicated just to that. And that gets tricky when you’re turning 3-4 flights a day with 4 staff total.

And there’s no real incentive in most cases to use a partner airline lounge because depending on their costs, you end up paying more per passenger.

So take IB for example. Close partner with BA, but BA wants to charge them $110 per passenger (made up but not super unrealistic numbers, I load planes not lounges so I’m spitballing here)

LH on the other hand offers them a deal, $75 per passenger. Branding and alliances be damned, you’re saving money on every passenger so you take the deal.

Whoever has the most customers can offer the lowest prices, but at the sacrifice of crowding

And also that CX a350 was here 2 days, left last night, and that’s the end of CX operations once again…for now

I think in the example you gave you meant AF instead of LH? At least when I flew out last Friday and used the AF lounge it was also filled with IB passengers.

Curious about the CX flights. Google flights shows daily 77W service again starting November 2nd. Given that’s only a month and a half away are CX still selling tickets and then canceling that close in?
