It’s hard to see Seattle getting increase when they have two three flights daily to each island, I have a feeling we could see something at PDX depending if southwest starts Hawaii flying from there ?

2-3 flights isn't a ton of capacity when the aircraft are 738s and sometimes 739s, considering the size of AS in SEA and relative to its competitors. HA is running A332s to HNL and OGG from SEA, while DL recently has put the A332 on HNL-SEA (of course, middle seats blocked) for 1 of the 2 flights. SEA gets a lot of connecting traffic that can likely sustain that capacity

That’s why I’m wondering if they will add a flight to somewhere like BOI or just add more Seattle to Hawaii ?

Have they ever tried FAIHNL?

Based on that article, it sounds like instead of adding to BOI, etc. the capacity will be routed through SEA (and SAN/LAX).

That is what it sounds like but BOI at some point I could them sense there making a many hub and they could use the incentives there offering

It’s just a redeye turn, doesn’t appear the plane stays in ANC. Probably just an easy way to bump up capacity without much risk. The morning PDX-ANC stays mainline.

So the Seattle one is gonna stay for rotation? Seems dumb to keep the sea one

I do know that SAN-OGG is set to go Daily-Double in the next month or so and SAN-HNL used to show also Daily-Double starting in May but doesn't right now; maybe it'll be delayed until June for the 2nd flight. If it happens, this will be the first time AS has doubled up on SAN-HNL; OGG has seen double in the past. I don't know if KOA & LIH might see additional frequencies at some point but it wouldn't shock the cottage cheese out of me if they did.!

It appears that AS is about ready to open up LIH, at least from SAN, and I'm very happy to see that. (Personally, Kauai is my favorite Hawaiian island and It's a shame they've remained closed so long.) I'm sure some of the OAK 800-etops birds will be used immediately to get LIH up and flying again.

In SAN, AS is the only cx flying nonstop to both KOA & LIH; WN has yet to even announce OGG-service and HA serves both HNL & OGG now. So I can see AS wanting to push hard against any additional competition in this large market.

I've seen other airlines add flights back or upgauge at MKE recently. AS was surprisingly one of the last to downgauge (their daily flight to SEA) during the pandemic. Might MKE see AS mainline back sooner rather than later?

I wouldn’t expect Boise-Hawaii until they have a healthy number of MAX aircraft. There is also the issue of space during certain hours for mainline Alaska aircraft. Mornings are especially chaotic even without many passengers in such a tight space for both people and planes.

A bit of a dumb question here....

I will be booking PDX-GEG pretty soon on the Q400. Admittedly, it's been a very long time since I've flown on one of their Q400s and I don't remember exactly which seats are the best for a decent view out the window. According to SeatGuru, the window seat views of rows 7-16 are all obstructed by the engine and propeller. https://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Alask ... s_Q400.php

Can anyone confirm this? Thanks!

I can confirm, I flew in row 14 this last week and still had an obstructed view from the engine. All seats can see the ground as the wing is above the fuselage, you just can't see the horizon due to the engine and landing gear. I also find it to be more quiet in the back and prefer rows 16-20 if I can find them.

Thanks for the tip! Typically I try to choose seats closer to the front of the plane, but I guess I'll have to remember to do the opposite with the Q400.

20A is my favorite seat on the Q400s. Wedge myself in and fall asleep.

Was even better when they'd offload from the back. It seemed like they stopped doing that when I was on the Q400s in 2019 and early 2020. Not sure if that was just the luck of the draw or not.

I like 20A as well. Offloading from the back doesn't get done as much in SEA in my recent experience. From what I was able to find out it depends which gate they are at. If they have a E175 on the left they typical wouldn't use the back door. As to the other station there appears to be more random

I go for Row 17 or farther back. Unobstructed view out, plus I enjoy watching the landing gear cycle. Long way to "that" one and only lav at the front, so go before you board.

It works great in stations that board/deplane at both doors, but if you think they may not use the back door at you hub destination, and you are making a connection, go forward.

AS Adds ANC-MSP

Sat Mar 20, 2021 12:27 am

Didn’t see this posted anywhere - but feel free to move if it is

AS is adding twice weekly ANC-MSP - clearly a retaliation against DL. I do find it interesting it’s only going to be 2x a week, but then again, most people make a week out of Alaska so, may make sense. Also, it will be a daytime flight, unusual for AS’ lower 48 hauls

https://www.prnewswire.com/news-release ... 50823.html

The 2021 adds just keep on coming...

It's just 2x weekly during peak summer months. I'm sure AS will do fine at least in 2021 when outdoor leisure will be very popular.

It's notable given that DL/NW have been heavy on that route for many decades and AS has never done it before.

AS is aiming at O/D traffic. Do you really think Delta could sustain 3X daily without a hub? Of course not. AS matching frequency to local demand isn't weak. It would be absurd to match Delta's schedule.

Great news for MSP, and while this may be competitive - said competitive effect will benefit the customers and passengers at both ends. I like the move, and wish both carriers well. Hopefully, both are able to mature the route into more and more often, and soon. Thanks to Delta recently, and to AS now, the people of Alaska could always use cheaper and more efficient travel options, and good to see greater connectivity to the lower 48. Connecting at MSP (either all on DL), or as a self-connect at MSP (and a potential interline/codeshare partner for AS) to SY's operation.

Thank you so much for this post! I was going to discuss that a bit more too.

As of Feb. 2019 - here's their route map (with ANC listed):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_Country_Airlines#/media/File:SY_2019.gif

Do you happen to recall the frequency, or schedule? Also (and pardon me for being as inquisitive here), what was their source of business on this route? For the MSP based passenger, with potentially 3 choices - DL, AS, or SY - who holds what advantages? On the Alaska side, I can see AS and DL's advantages - but fail to see how/where SY may be able to capitalize on the Alaskan side of the transaction to make it work against essentially two larger carriers with hubs/advantages on each end.

Well $197 RT is wide open and available right now. Better get to booking... lol

Also, for what it’s worth... SY and DL have sometimes run 6x daily (usually on the weekends) between the two of them on the route. I doubt 1 extra frequency 2 days a week is really gonna change anything, if anything, I see AS just testing the waters for daily service in 2022

Yes why would you fly an already over saturated market when there are other cities with little or no direct flights to ANC where they could get some traction.

Incidentally, it's a 737-800, and the first time I've seen a section of their seat map blocked for OneWorld Elite.

Except it will make money. And for the Alaskans that fly AS, which is almost everyone in AK, the opportunity to reach that part of the nation, AND earn miles in arguably the best alliance, OW...it’s a win for those loyal AS flyers and AS’s bottom line for the summer. Lol RD’s are lost in space.

Funny thing is within hours DL and SY both fare matched. Gonna be a fare war market for sure - but the planes will certainly be full. Obviously not every seat will go for <$100, but it’ll certainly get the booking going

SCX fly's this route in the summer has for years

Thank you so much for this post! I was going to discuss that a bit more too.

As of Feb. 2019 - here's their route map (with ANC listed):

Do you happen to recall the frequency, or schedule? Also (and pardon me for being as inquisitive here), what was their source of business on this route? For the MSP based passenger, with potentially 3 choices - DL, AS, or SY - who holds what advantages? On the Alaska side, I can see AS and DL's advantages - but fail to see how/where SY may be able to capitalize on the Alaskan side of the transaction to make it work against essentially two larger carriers with hubs/advantages on each end.

SY has flown to ANC since they had DC-10's It was charter flights back then. Those DC-10 where always full. What most folks don't understand is the number of folks go just to fish. Cooler after cooler being unloaded back in MSP packed with salmon.....

I think the ANC-MSP route experiment will be the same as the ANC-GEG route...it'll last just one season. That's my take.
