Is there a long term replacement plan for this fleet? It's starting to age I would think.

789s? Or new 339s? Or some combination with 321XLRs?

Not happening any time soon, I'd suggest. AC tends to keep their planes for a long time. And, although some of this fleet is getting a little long in the tooth, the newer frames balance the fleet out. In time, AC could acquire further second hand frames along the same lines - and retire these older frames - since there are quite a few A330 classics that have been delivered within the last 6-8 years. That means less capex on new aircraft. I might be wrong. But that's my gut feeling about how they will move forward.

Air Canada A330 Fleet News and Discussion Thread - 2021

Just noticed C-GKUH MSN 1156 is back flying again, flew RFD->YYZ on 12Jan. Currently flying YUL->YVR. Looked at the flight number on AC app looks to have 32J/24PY so new config.

Does anyone know why AC has kept YUL-LHR on 333s instead of 787s ?

It appears to be the only passenger transatlantic flight operated by the type currently. There are some cargo flights to MAD/AMS with the 333, or passenger flights from YUL to FLL/YVR (I believe PUJ/SJO operated with them recently but have now been cancelled). Even BOG that had some cargo flights operated with the 330s is now operated with a 787 following the passenger flight launch.

Might have more to do with pilots, YUL is the primary A330 base.

Thats my opinion.

I would have guessed pilots but also probably because YUL-LHR is one of the shortest TATL in the system right now so it benefits least from having the 787 and I think the 787 may be stretched thin where the 787s currently have better and more efficient uses for TPAC and cargo flights. There have been some cargo A330 flights out of YYZ too to South America and Europe.

The A333 is likely a good choice for 6 hour flights. Also aircraft based in YUL so no need to deadhead pilots.

There are more cargo flights on YUL-AMS/MAD/IST than passenger flights on YUL-LHR.

YUL-MAD alone is 3x weekly. Whereas YUL-LHR is 2x weekly this month and next.

Also, It’s not just BOG that has cargo runs out of YUL to South America, but also UIO (via HAV), and until recently, LIM.

So you see, since the onset of the pandemic and subsequent travel restrictions, the AC A330s have been busier with cargo than with passengers.

AC has 3 A330's in cargo configuration with seats removed so that cargo can be carried on both decks. All 3 are former SG birds that will eventually be refurbished. The Canada-Europe and Canada-SA cargo runs are generally done by these 3. AC also has 4 77W's in cargo configuration that tend to do the transpacific cargo runs (but also fly other routes). There are still 6 789's parked so it seems unlikely that the fleet is stretched. It is more likely that they have less cargo capacity as seats have not been removed, so they are not the best aircraft to do the all cargo runs.

As mentioned, YUL is the A330 aircraft and pilot base, so routes out of YUL are generally flown by A330's. There are now 3 refurbished A330's that have the Dream Cabin configuration. This essentially makes them interchangeable with the rest of the wide body fleet in terms of passenger experience, and one could argue a better experience in Y as the seats are wider (2-4-2 versus 3-3-3 or 3-4-3). The most recent refurb was done in Rockford and there are now 5 birds (FINS 935-939) that are all in Rockford. It seems that the pace of refurbishment has picked up and is being done in the US rather than in Singapore (as was done with FINs 934 and 942).

Having flown on both 934 and 942, the refurbishment really makes the experience similar. The seats are slightly different (and I still would rank them 777 > 787 > A330) but overall AC has a fairly consistent J class experience across the fleet with the 67's retired and the A330's refurbished. I suspect once all 17 are refurbished and flying, and intercontinental travel picks up, there will be A330's based both in YUL and YYZ as these 17 will do a fair bit of the Eastern Canada-Europe flying. It suits those routes very well and AC will use the 787 for the longer routes where it is most efficient, the 77L on YVR-SYD and YYZ-HKG (if demand returns), and the 77W on the highest demand routes (again if demand returns) such as YYZ/YVR-LHR, YYZ-FRA, YUL-CDG, etc.

Yes. All of the additions to AC's fleet are former SQ birds (some of which were with TAP for a short period before the A339's came into the TAP fleet).

Presently that is unclear. The 2020 MD&A indicated there would be 16 in the fleet by end of 2021. AC was originally to receive 9 former SQ frames. It is not clear if they are not taking up the very last one or if they are taking an older frame out of service. AC's plan for year end 2021 is to have 24 777's (18 77W's and 6 77L's), 37 787's (29 789's and 8 788's), and 16 A330's, so a total of 77 wide bodies not counting the 767's freighters that are to join in the 4th quarter of 2021.

In reference to the numerous mentions of where specific fleet pilot bases are, I can assure you the company has zero hesitations over deadheading pilots between bases to carry out flights on a type without a pilot base on location. Fleet deployments do not consider pilot bases. In fact, reality is the other way around; specific fleet positions on a given base follow the aircraft/route planning as laid out by the commercial department (albeit, sometimes this "following" takes months/years).
Implying that route/aircraft type decisions are made with consideration to current pilot/fleet positions at a specific base is like the tail wagging the dog.

Unfortunately wouldn’t surprise me if the plane was done for. It is 22 years old and the A330 fleet was kept around to act as flexible capacity. With international recovery slow the need for some of the older of the original A330s is questionable when they have plenty of 787s and newer A330s they leased.

C-GFAJ is not done and will be with the fleet for the foreseeable future. This model won't fly until it's had the dream cabin installed sometime in Q1 2022.

Anyone know anything recent about C-GFAH?
I flew her a few years ago from DUB-YYZ. Would be sad for her to be scrapped.

Oh wow, Air Canada are really getting their money’s worth out of the A330s then lol. Thanks for the correction!

I assume dream cabin installation will not be at VCV….?

That’s good news. Thanks. I believe GFAH still had the old
livery so if it is new interior installation I’d say it’ll be new livery too.

From what I can see in schedule (which will/can of course change), the 333 will be doing a lot of flying in Summer 2022! I wonder how many, in total, AC will be flying by then.

How many frames are left in the old config/how many are currently being reconfigured? It's been a few weeks since the last update.

7 reconfigured but 6 in service (944 is in HKG and isn't flying)
4 cargo (all former SIA birds)
3 old configuration in service
1 likely being reconfigured (935 is in QPG)
1 stored (933 in VCV)

There isn't a good explanation as to why 944 has been sitting in HKG for a while now. It was reconfigured in QPG, flew for a bit, and was sent back to Asia.

Anybody got an update on the fleet? Do you guys know if the old config birds are limited to certain routes or are they rotated through the "regular" fleet plan with the refurbished a330s?

AC’s Q3 update shows that all 4 currently cargo configured A333s will return to pax ops by the end of 2022, making the pax fleet to 16. If I remember correctly, the original plan was to focus on the reconfiguration (Dreamliner cabin) on the original A333s (early 2000 build) first, then the ex-Tap birds and finally the ex-SQ birds. Not sure on the process but since the ex-SQ frames are being slowly removed from cargo ops, their reconfig may be prioritized? I believe the ex-TAP frames are based out of YUL for the ex-Rouge routes.

Do they actually replace the baggage bins and the wall panels during the seat conversion? I've been on C-GFAH last Friday and the panels definitely didn't look 22 years old.

Do they actually replace the baggage bins and the wall panels during the seat conversion? I've been on C-GFAH last Friday and the panels definitely didn't look 22 years old.

I don’t think they are replaced, only refreshed. The newer SQ frames have the new drop down bins, while the other ones have the fold up door type of bins in the centre row. The original A333s that have been reconfigured seem to have the original bins.
