Really impressive how NK has grown at CMH in just a few years, especially up against a well established and large WN operation. LAX is a great add, as both AA/DL cut CMH-LAX at the beginning of the pandemic. That means a route that as recently as 2019 was 3x daily on mainline aircraft was until today completely unserved. I expect this will be a very successful route, even if one of the network carriers restarts it down the road.

Anyone think Spirit will try leisure/Mexico/Caribbean out of Atlanta like they do out of Dallas/Houston? Both hub cities for one of the big 4. They seem to do well competing with Delta and Southwest in ATL. ATLFLL is one of their busier routes it seems. Surprised they haven't done so by now. ATLMBJ, ATLSTT, or ATLCUN would be interesting especially in today's climate.

Short of announcing Europe, Asia, or Hawaii, no new route(s) announcement(s) on Spirits part would surprise me. They were relatively unpredictable pre-covid, now all bets are off. I always thought their west coast international gateway would be LAS and would have never predicted that LAX would play this role for them, but alas.

Regarding ATL-Caribbean/Mexico; on one hand as you mentioned they fly DFW, IAH, and also DTW, PHL, EWR, ORD (all fortress hubs for the big 3) to the Caribbean/Mexico. You can also include Southeast FL and the DC area if you factor in FLL and BWI. Following this logic, ATL would seem to make sense and perhaps they are just waiting for the airframes to start these routes. On the other hand, ATL is the fortress of all fortresses and perhaps determined that they don’t want to deal with DLs response/wrath should they dip their toes in internationally from ATL.

So to answer your question, as with anything else with Spirit, it’s a resounding “who knows”.

I think NK will add more leisure routes to Mexico in the near future, that's sort of a hot area for adding routes right now. I think a little further down the road, I could see NK adding more South America routes from FLL too. PEI comes to mind pretty quickly. I think it is very plausible that NK adds FLL-CUZ when the new airport opens in Cuzco in the coming years. The A320neos can easily do FLL-CUZ and NK already has a pretty strong station in LIM. I think a flight to the US is pretty likely once the new CUZ airport opens and I sort of feel like NK to FLL is more likely than AA to MIA.

It's going to be interesting to see if the Panhandle can sustain all this service between WN/G4 adds at VPS, NK at PNS, plus lots of other adds from UA/AA.

While NK hasn't yet added DTW-PNS nonstop service, I agree that NK adding DTW-PNS nonstop service is a possibility with NK having a strong presence in the DTW market and with NK having added nonstop service to PNS from other Midwestern cities.

I agree that NK adding service to CVG might be a possibility with CVG being one of the top remaining markets without NK service, even though most of the destinations that NK would be serving nonstop from CVG are already served nonstop from CVG on F9, G4, and/or WN.

CVG-MCO/TPA are already already pretty well served with the recent increases made by WN on the CVG-MDW/TPA routes.

WN and SY adding CVG-LAS nonstop service are possibilities with WN having a hub at LAS and with SY having nonstop service to LAS from some destinations other than MSP. If demand for additional nonstop service to LAS is there from CVG, I probably would expect WN or SY to add CVG-LAS nonstop service. WN is also less reliant on O&D to make CVG-LAS nonstop service work with the connections that WN can offer to its California destinations through LAS.

On the other hand, there are some other nonstop routes such as CVG-BOS/DFW/FLL/MYR/MSY/PNS that could be added by NK if NK enters the CVG market.

Rumors locally have been that CUZ as well as some northern Brazilian points are on NK's FLL wishlist with the A320neo .

SLC, OMA, and OKC are surely on the short list for expansion. SAT, JAX, and ABQ would all be nice adds as well.

One thing I am curious about is the potential for NK to add IAD or DCA. Does anyone think that NK would add one of those two?

I would look to a bit more expansion to South America in the next 5 years including FLL to CUZ and potentially TRU in Peru; BEL, SLZ, FOR, and MAO (no idea if a fully load NK plane could make FLL-BSB, I am sure someone here could answer that) in Brazil. Also would include MCO-LIM/UIO/GYE.

My personal guess is "watch deliveries." If the 319NEO really comes true, expect more South America flying. If its 320NEOs, expect more domestic dot connecting with a few more cities. Plattsburgh and Buffalo were specifically cross border traffic dependent according my people at Spirit.

I wouldn't be surprised if NK doesn't look for more 319s on the secondary market as well, as long as they could conform them at reasonable cost.

While NK already serves BWI in the Baltimore/Washington region, NK adding service to IAD is a possibility with IAD being almost 60 miles west of BWI. There is also a significant amount of population on the west side of the DC metropolitan area to support NK service out of IAD in addition to BWI, and there are also some leisure destinations such as FLL, LAS, and MSY that are currently served nonstop from IAD on UA but not on any LCC's or ULCC's. NK can also likely undercut UA on adds such as IAD-FLL/LAS/MSY, and there are some travelers on the west side of the DC metro area who would prefer to fly out of IAD instead of BWI.

There are also some other markets where NK serves more than one airport, including FLL/PBI in Greater Miami, PIT/LBE in Greater Pittsburgh, CLE/CAK in Northeast Ohio, LAX/BUR/SNA in Greater Los Angeles, and LGA/EWR in NYC.

While the re-entry of NK into DCA is a possibility if NK can acquire enough slots at DCA, NK would need to acquire slots held by other airlines in order to re-enter DCA, even though there are some DCA slots held by other airlines that are currently unused due to pandemic-related cuts. NK can also more easily enter IAD, which is not slot-restricted and which has less competition to most domestic leisure markets.

I agree with your point, especially with SLC being the top remaining market in the contiguous U.S. without NK service.

While NK already serves FLL and OAK, NK had also previously considered adding service to MIA and SFO.

I also would probably expect NK to add service to ABQ, CVG, MIA, OKC, OMA, SLC, SFO, SJC, and IAD at some point.

I don't think we will be seeing NK at DCA for a long time, mainly due to slot restrictions. They used to fly to a couple cities from DCA in the 2000s but eventually left. The only way I really see NK returning to DCA is if there's a sudden surplus of slots, which I doubt will be happening anytime soon.

I think NK to IAD will eventually happen in the coming years. UA has a monopoly on a significant number of Florida routes (including FLL), so I could see NK starting off with something like IAD-FLL/TPA/LAS/RSW/LAX/MCO. A lot of those routes are only flown by UA but there's plenty of demand for more than 1 carrier on it. UA only runs IAD-FLL 2x daily and there's no other competition. NK can easily fit in on IAD-FLL. TPA, RSW, LAS are all only flown by UA and those routes and NK could probably do well on those routes. There's also next to zero ULCC presence at IAD right now. F9 is the only ULCC there and they only fly to DEN and AUS presently. If NK wanted to be really aggressive, I could see them adding IAD-ORD/IAH and go up right against UA, but I don't see that happening.

SAT, OMA, and a return to JAX seem like things that will eventually happen too.

I agree that NK adding service to OMA is a possibility with OMA being one of the top remaining markets in the contiguous U.S. without NK service. I also agree that an NK re-entry to SAT and JAX are both possibilities with both SAT and JAX being top markets in the contiguous U.S. that aren't currently served by NK.

There is an opportunity for NK to add OMA-FLL nonstop service if NK enters the OMA market with OMA being one of the top U.S. destinations without nonstop LCC/ULCC service to the MIA/FLL market, even though OMA-FLL nonstop service could be added by G4 or WN. I also would certainly expect NK to add OMA-LAS nonstop service if it enters the LAS market with NK already serving LAS nonstop from all of the Midwestern destinations that are currently served by NK.

Depending on how much of an appetite NK has for undercutting DL on some routes, SLC is an obvious add to its network. I'd probably expect them to add SLC to LAS/LAX/DTW/FLL/MCO at the very least.

It was info given directly by someone at Spirit involved with the Flight Crew (internal memo).

There are some more nonstop routes such as ATL-CMH/MCI/OAK/PIT/RDU/STL/SAN/SEA that could be added by NK with CMH, MCI, OAK, PIT, RDU, STL, SAN, and SEA being top destinations traveled to from ATL that NK doesn't currently serve nonstop from ATL.

NK isn't going to be flying any transcons out of ATL aside from LAX. Maybe ATL-OAK now that DL keeps suspending it. But certainly not ATL-SAN/SEA.

Anyone know when NK commences its MSY-SAP? I heard it was loaded again, but wasn't sure of a date.

Why not? They also serve LAS and sometimes twice daily... I agree OAK will be a matter of time.

Here's a little throwback...to 2008.

Interesting anna.aero article from that time as well: https://www.anna.aero/2008/08/15/fort-l ... n-the-sky/

Spirit actually added more flights to ACY. Now up to 12. Pre-pandemic I think we were at 10. Would love for them to try PNS or be bold and try SJU due to the travel boom there.

There's a travel boom at SJU? First I've heard of it. Thought they'd been doing pretty bad since Maria.

Then again, since the virus has put the kibosh on intl travel, I guess anywhere in the US is fair game for domestic travelers.

I can seem to find a current Spirit route map to compare with the one above from 2008.

There's one on the NK website, but it's a smallish image as part of a web page. It blows up fairly clearly though. There's also an interactive route map, but I haven't figured out if it's possible to see routes from more than one location at a time.

"We were very pleased to see how well both our domestic and international network performed as demand strengthened in the last few weeks of the quarter. This strength, along with improvement in forward bookings, drove positive cash from operations for the full first quarter 2021 even when excluding the payroll support program funds received. Assuming these trends continue, we believe we can achieve a positive Adjusted EBITDA margin for the full year 2021."

"We estimate our second quarter 2021 Adjusted EBITDA margin will be between negative 5 percent to breakeven, assuming a fuel price per gallon of $1.95"

ASMs for Q2 at nearly 95% of Q2 2019.

A host of new flights that will bring NK up to an average of 10 or so daily departures from MCI.

I found it interesting they did this release for a bunch of routes and frequencies that had already been announced a month or so ago. Nice pub for MCI though.

I’ve heard that MCI has been a market NK has had a more difficult time growing. I don’t think the ULCC model has been received as well there as other Midwest markets.

Nice to see them making an effort though. Like you say the lack of ULCC coverage there I have found interesting. Seems like they should have more. F9 and G4 are pretty much non existent

That’s pretty good. Spirit flies to one location from Portland.

Yep- over the years there has been LAS, DFW, LAX, and SAN from PDX. Not sure if there has been others such as ORD or DTW. LAS is the only survivor. I’d love to see some more NK action out of PDX.

NK has tried PDX-DFW/DTW/LAX/ORD/SAN. All of them were pulled shortly after they started. I believe they had announced plans for PDX-BWI a few years ago but they never started it. Now it's just PDX-LAS.

F9 and SY have also tried a handful of routes in Portland as well. Similarly to NK, now F9 just has PDX-DEN (and PDX-LAS) and SY just has PDX-MSP.

It will be interesting to see what comes of this news...

Assuming B6 will be trying to take advantage of this as well.

EWR-ORD/DTW/DFW/LAX/CUN have always made sense to me.
