Per the Cranky Flier, Frontier is not dropping service between Denver and Wichita after all. Perhaps this has something to do with F9 announcing new service between Las Vegas and Wichita later in 2021.

Is the EWR focus city just outright cancelled now?

Anyone think GSP or markets like TYS-MCO will come back eventually? Has there ever been talk of AVL? Seems G4 does really well there on their SFB runs.

SDQ lasted for about a week lol. Their EWR ops are a mess. They can’t even make EWR-DEN/TPA/RSW/PBI/CUN work right now. PHX also got the permanent axe it seems. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for F9 to capitalize on the lack of competition at EWR and they are just sitting back.

Im guessing they are aware - and it’s probably too big a dumpster fire to justify ops just for the sake of ops.

It’s so cheap to fly anybody right now, and there’s plenty of nonstops out of NYC to those places - why would you choose F9?

B6 isn’t really so cheap from EWR to many destinations. F9 could just undercut them and still be very profitable. I don’t think F9 is giving EWR a chance. This is the issue they have with many routes.

F9’s website shows EWR-PHX resuming on 3/6/21, 1x daily (subject to change, of course). So it doesn’t appear to be a permanent cut as of now.

There really are flights that can't be operated profitably. See enilria's weekly route/frequency report. Even before Covid carriers were making adjustments ALL THE TIME.

We know F9 has a lower cost structure per ASM than B6 (or Southwest, Alaska...) Unless you're an F9 insider you don't know TRASM on their routes. 'Just undercut' doesn't always lead to flight profitability. I don't expect that F9 staffs Revenue Management with analysts lacking a proper education in economics or statistics.

F9 was opening crew bases in MIA and EWR. Allegedly, the EWR base hasn't opened yet. How many crew members are now MIA based?

That doesn't mean they won't be cheaper from EWR in the future. B6 has been willing to match the ULCC prices on select routes for awhile now. Specifically, I can recall them offering $18 one-way fares on BOS-LAS, matching NK's fares. If EWR ULCC competition continues to heat up overtime, I would expect B6 to resort to similar pricing tactics. If F9 were to undercut B6, then B6 would probably end up matching F9's fares on many of their offered EWR routes.

Does frontier really only have 2 departures out of PHL today? If so this is not only an embarrassment for PHL but the whole F9 brand.

Air travel is not at 10% of last years levels. If F9 wants their schedule to align with demand they should offer at least 7 departures today.

Tuesdays have long seen the lowest fares published, which reflect soft demand. Post-Covid, Frontier has taken a page out of the Allegiant playbook. Tuesdays see dramatically lower aircraft utilization across the network. Approximately 20 spare aircraft parked in DEN on any given Tuesday, with another dozen parked in LAS. No sense burning fuel to operate empty aircraft on low demand days. Are you flying to Florida on a Tuesday? Coincidentally I've got a Florida trip booked this week. Depart Thursday, return Sunday, a long weekend, the pattern which matches much broader travel patterns. Plenty of service closer to the weekends, when the demand is there.

Frontier's website still lists BFM and TYR when you try to book but there are no flights and nothing in the future. Anyone know if either of these stations are planned to come back?

Where did you see that they zeroed them out? I thought OAG updates are no longer on the page.

Also, I've taken EWR-MCO a few times recently. Always packed.

So has F9 officially gutted AUS? I think they only fly nonstop to three cities now. I thought they were going to try and turn it into a focus city?

If you try to book them it says no seats for the whole schedule. There flights do fill out of EWR so they must not like the costs associated with it I’m assuming.

This latest announcement coincides with F9s prior announcement of ATL becoming a domicile base for pilots and flight attendants later this year. I would expect some further new destination announcements from ATL this summer.

Didn’t they run a bunch of routes to ATL 5 years ago or so just to see most of them get cut? I just don’t see ATL as a high demand ULCC spot. Delta/WN can pretty much match and run them out. But maybe it will go better this time.

Yes, they did. Not sure about other routes but PVD-ATL was part of that and got cut something like two months after start of service. This was 2018 I believe. Hoping for better luck this time.

ATL-MCO was one route - less than daily IIRC. I don't know how long it lasted. DL was filling fifteen 757s a day - with some connecting traffic, too, of course.

Maybe F9 could've added ATL-BOS, but I think they avoided doing that because the route seems too competitive, even though it's only served by B6 and DL at the moment. (I believe NK is expected to resume its ATL-BOS flights soon.)

With F9's current expansion in New England outside of BOS, something tells me that their return to the state of NH is inevitable. Perhaps MHT is next?

Frontier and their on-order A321XLR

Thu Apr 08, 2021 12:05 pm

I had the chance to fly Frontier for the very first time a couple weeks ago, from Portland, Maine to RSW and back. It’s a nice service to have for us in New England.

In 2024 I see that 18 A321XLRs are on order. We know what B6 has planned for theirs (Europe). Will Frontier follow them across the Atlantic, or send them over the Pacific to Hawaii? Or someplace else entirely?

They will most likely be using them for transcon flights. They currently can’t fly their a321s from coast to coast due to weight issues. The XLRs will allow them to fly at max capacity from east to west.

I could see them doing some deeper flights into South America, maybe test Hawaii? But I think overall, transcon is what their focus will be.

With F9 willingness to throw darts with a lot of less than daily flights I could easily see them flying from a dozen smaller western cities to Hawaii.
Example they could easily base 2 A321XLR at ONT.
During the day fly a day Turns to places like SJD,PVR,SJO,LIR,CUN or domestic markets like PVD,BDL,RDU,MCO,MIA.
Then in the evening fly ONT-Hawaii red Eyes returns.

I wonder what sort of effect the extreme density of F9s 321 config will have on the range for their XLRs. Airbus seems to say 4000nm in a one class config - we’ll see if that’s how the real world flying plays out.
