The latest information I have received places the FIS in the "hidden" space across from Gate 5, where it was completely built out for Customs but never had the opportunity to be utilized just prior to 9/11. The TSA then arrived and gutted everything and turned the area into their current offices where I was actually working at the time. It appears that the TSA has signed off and will move to the upper level mechanical offices/former restaurant on the far eastern part of the terminal to accommodate the FIS. The jetport is waiting for funding to commence this project and is optimistic it will come through in the near future.

As much as I was hoping that the terminal would be physically extended beyond Gate 11, it appears that the two new jetways will be connected to an elevated enclosed walkway similar to Gate 1. This approach is becoming more common with airports in order to save money and it has been determined that there is ample passenger holding space at that end of the concourse. The apron has already been fortified and painted and once the funds are available the transition should be effortless. When completed, it will give PWM 12 jetways for larger aircraft and 2 additional smaller loading bridges (Gate 1A/B) for regional jets.

Hope that answers your questions and I'll give any updates as they come along.

Thank you so much for the update! Im from Maine and visit frequently, especially in and out of the Jetport. So good to hear of the expansion!

A quick follow up to your question EFA2014. The PWM master plan does have Gate 1 being expanded to the east and the current regional loading bridges being replaced with a single jetway to accommodate larger aircraft for United. I think this was to happen in FY22 but with COVID all projects are obviously pushed back.

As a heads up for the BTV folks, the Beta Technologies Alia-250 prototype has been doing a lot of flying this week. With the upcoming closure of PBG for runway construction, I'm assuming it will be based at BTV for a while. At least this week the flying has been early in the morning, and there's always a helicopter following it which helps to spot it as it's super quiet. It can also be tracked, but only once airborne, it seems.

Too bad, I would have flown B6 to FLL for sure.

FWIW, I discovered BTV a while ago, flying with PeopleExpress...

We where so many Montrealers flying with PE that they started YMX - EWR! I recall paying US$112.00 total for a return ticket to LAX from Mirabel!

The legacies financially it does make sense to have you connect thru CLT, IAD, DCA, PHL all are on the way and offer options to lots of smaller florida airports. I think it would take an airline like southwest or allegiant or frontier to start more florida N/S. I mean if there was ever a chance of landing an o&d leisure route it's now, I woudlnt say its zero

Until your comment, I never would have guessed that Air Florida served BTV (however briefly). But sure enough, here it is in the January 1984 route map:
http://www.departedflights.com/QH011584.html
Would be curious if anyone knows the aircraft type that was used. 737? Or L188? Or was it an affiliated commuter, not mainline Air Florida?

Air Florida--It was a 737-200 mainline BTV/LGA and on to PBI.

DFW provides way better connections and I don't think the btv/BGR crowd is going to miami and vice versa. Other cities in florida, yes, but not miami.
DFW allows alot of one stops to cities that are hard to get to on AA. COS, GJT, SNA, DRO, JAC, EGE, BZN, ABQ, SAF there will be alot of cities this opens up. Look at vermonters colorado how many people in the summer go to Colorado for vacations or to visit friends who have moved out there. DFW is all about connections. Miami does caribbean connections but this is for summer

I would think B6 staying year-round would be the first step.

Nationwide I think a lot of the Florida service is not at sustainable levels, its a miserable place to go in the summer. My guess is for New England is that anyone who wanted to go to Florida, already has and they wont be going back in the summer, when outdoor weather is ideal.

MCO/FLL would be a nice way for B6 to remain in PWM year round though if they were to start those in the fall.
Experience is what you get when what you thought would work out didn't!

Thanks. I was asking because Sun Country temporarily listed BTV as a destination with flights to FLL, but it wasn't available for booking.

They removed BTV this morning, so it was either an error or it's something to look out for.

The most logical add to PWM for JetBlue is summer seasonal to EWR. They do really well to JFK in the summer time. It's on par with ACK/MVY. The next step is probably for them to restore JFK-PWM year round on a lower frequency. If they decide to build up RDU, I can see RDU-PWM down the road.

Interesting, BTV-FLL on SY would be an odd-ball route for them. Not that I don't see something like that happening, but would come out of left field. Could be a charter, that got mixed in somehow? If anyone is going to fly BTV-SoFL I would bet F9 would be first, doing BTV-MIA

Coincidence or not SY8652 is currently inbound from FLL to BTV. SY has been flying a few military charters from BTV over the past months, but neither FLL-BTV or BTV-MSP (the next leg) seems to be a likely military move. Could be a charter of another sort, but I don't know who it would be for. It seems late in the year to be college sports.

there is a considerable west coast, intermountain and ArKLaTex bank of flights at 1045pm-ish that would capture a lot of traffic

The flight number would suggest a charter of some sort.

Also interesting today is the UA A320 from IAD. Another charter? Or are they are going to do 1x/week IAD-BTV over the summer? Don't have time to dig through the schedules.

From what I've seen on FlightAware and their website, United is currently operating IAD-BTV roughly 1-2x daily. I've also noticed that today and another time or two recently that the Friday night arrival and Saturday morning departure was ungauged to an A320. Can't say why though. Maybe extra cargo for BTV, vaccines perhaps? That's purely a guess.

Maybe so, but kids are out of school in the summer and that makes Florida popular for families. June and July are bigger months than Sep/Oct/Nov. June is about the size of January. See state visitor stats.

Ok, so the A320 seems to be a substitution. Interesting nonetheless - it’s the first mainline on IAD-BTV that I can recall since UA flew 737-200s during the 1990s (?) (not sure about when that was, but it was decades ago).

UA had three daily services on 737-200 IAD/BTV late 1989. Checking schedules in 1991 and 1995 that service was flown by J41.

I believe UA ran some 737-800's and maybe A319 here and there to IAD at the peak of 2019, when we were seeing mainline AC to ATL, DEN, ORD, EWR, IAD, CLT, and PHL

Has US/AA really flown mainline BTV-CLT? My impression was that they remained steadfastly RJ even when UA did their mainline 'experiment' a couple of years ago. The only exception that I recall was the E-190 to PHL for a few fairly short periods.

They did. I have a picture from Thanksgiving 2018 with two mainline UA aircraft in the morning rush to IAD and ORD, and a DL 737 was also operating the ATL flight that day. I had a couple mainline flights to ORD that following year as well which was really nice.

I'm also not sure if the CLT route has been anything larger than a CR9. Frankly, I'm not sure US/AA has flown any B or A aircraft to BTV since the extension of the North Concourse. I think the E90 is the biggest aircraft they've brought here in quite some time.

Looking back through some pics again, when they redid the concrete at Gate 4 in 2019 there were new markings for E90 and A320/A321 but I've yet to see more than a CR9 at that gate. Part of me wants to say they repainted different markings, but I'm not completely certain.

The last regularly scheduled US/AA mainline that was not an E190 that I can remember was 1x/day PHL-BTV on the A319, but as you say that was years ago. Talking 2010 or maybe even before that.

I thought I remember seeing a 190 on the route a couple of times, but could be confusing it with PHL which I think at its peak, saw 2x AA 190's.

As another poster pointed out, we haven't add a Airbus or Boeing AC from AA in a long time. Couldn't even give us a token A319 on the DFW route haha

AA has had Embs to DCA and PHL pre pandemic regularly scheduled. CLT has only had CR9/CR7 scheduled service for long stretches since it started. Has never had any other planes.

Jetblue is going to serve PWM-LGA in 2022 as part of a expansion out of LGA.

Do you think that will replace summer service to JFK or will JetBlue serve both airports from PWM?

I assume B6 will serve both, however this will replace AA's PWM-LGA flights
Experience is what you get when what you thought would work out didn't!

i'm really surprised EWR-PWM didn't get added, but LGA-PWM did. Maybe JFK-PWM will be back to year round.

When it comes to winter I don't think anything has fundamentally changed in Maine from when they ended year-round service. I think it's more about local people going somewhere warm than visitors coming to Maine. If they really want to do something for PWM year-round maybe they should try direct flights to Florida or else offer connections through somewhere with more reliable weather over the winter. I think you mentioned RDU on the JetBlue thread, which would probably work well (and for BTV also)

It would take years of reliable year round service to get me to fly JetBlue regularly out of PWM. After B6 dumped Portland last time I cant imagine any PWM based frequent flyer choosing them again as a primary airline, no matter how much seasonal service they add.

according to AA.com, AA will offer a 4th ORD-PWM on Saturdays starting Jun 5th with 3 175's and 1 A319. Sundays will have 4X 175s PWM-ORD.

The difference now being that you have to think of it as AA/B6 and not just B6.

I was informed yesterday by an undisclosed source that BDL is getting ready for another new airline announcement. When I asked who, I was informed they currently have a NDA and when it will be announced, I was told “should be very soon to be honest”. My guess is Breeze….

Thoughts?

Hopper media has just listed Portland, ME as the top searched travel destination in the country for the upcoming summer season. Kalispell MT, Orlando FL, Long Beach CA and Hilton Head SC round out the top 5.

Do you have a link? Maybe the highest Increased or something?? The average person hasnt even heard of long beach or kalispell to know how search for it over las vegas or miami. I can't Imagine any world long beach or portland are the more searched travel destinations over Vegas or Denver or San Diego etc.
