MSP is now rebookable for all upstate airports starting on April 11th. BUF is on the A319 and ALB/ROC/SYR are on the CRJ-900. Great to see this service back!

Also ALB mainline to DTW has been zero'd out permanently unfortunately..

Wonderful news! BUF is almost back to 100% pre covid. Still some missing flights. But pretty much getting back to normal.

AA pushed out the November update, and Upstate is receiving some serious mainline love:

BUF has 1X 738 and 2X 320 on CLT as well as 1X 319 on ORD

ROC is getting 3X 319 on CLT. Considering currently there is zero mainline service and the first mainline metal doesn’t touch down until October, this is a big jump. I can’t remember the last time US/AA operated 3X daily mainline into ROC.

SYR will have 4X daily 738 on CLT

ALB is getting 3X A320 on CLT

Also, for BUF, ROC and SYR it’s worth noting that it appears all 3 upstate airport survived DL’s minor schedule takedown last weekend. Zero capacity decreases, including the NYC flights, which is slightly surprising since they’ve been the last to come back. ROC will be back to 13 flights a day for DL in October, and along with SYR will be enjoying a significant capacity increase when the A320 replaces the 717 on all 3 ATL flights as of next Monday.

Ithaca also gets in on the AA love, with ITH - CLT moving from 2x E145s to 2x CRJ-700s in November.

I believe that'll be the first time ITH has had scheduled daily >50 seat flights (or scheduled daily first class) since DL scheduled CRJ-900s in Feb 2015. AA had CRJ-700s operating the Saturday-only CLT flight back in October 2019 but that was just for a total of five round trips.

Unfortunately you left out and ignored ALB's huge capacity decrease. DTW is still 4x a day on CRJ7s then to CRJ9s. However ATL is 3x a day except on Saturday where it only does down to 2x a day. Also for this week ALB's mid-morning DTW flight has been axed. Also not to mention mainline to DTW has been zero'd out forever.

I left it out, because compared to pre pandemic, that’s not a capacity decrease - it’s exactly as it was before. DL hasn’t had more than 3X daily on ATL from ALB in 5+ years, and DTW mainline was not a year round thing. +/- the 40 seat difference between a CR9 and a 717 is not massive.

DTW mainline was a year round thing, it was the RON operated on an A319 and sometimes an A320 or 738. Also DL has 3x daily on ATL everyday except for Sunday now which is only 2x a daily, which is not pre-pandemic. DTW is also 4x daily only Sunday, Monday, Thursday, and Friday. Rest of the days are 3x daily, and Saturdays is 2x daily.

I don't think DL has operated the 738 into ALB since around 2005/2006.

ALB-ATL has always been 3x daily. Historically it was 3x 727 daily, then it switched to 3x 738 daily around the year 2000, before becoming all RJ in around 2006, and mainline only returned after the NW merger IIRC.

BUF-DFW is going 2x daily A319 in November. That is significantly more capacity than pre-pandemic.

Probably somewhat of a response to Frontier starting BUF - DFW in April. I think with a frequency of 2-3 a week. This should be interesting to see who blinks first.

Southwest is restarting ALB-RSW operating every Saturday starting on January 22, 2022. After this our only route lost due to covid would be FLL. Interesting to see what Frontier will do with this, because they operated ALB-RSW as well in 2019 and early 2020.

I think there were a few 738 turns on ATL-ALB circa fall 2019 when the MD88 drawdown really started. Before that I was always Maddogs to ATL. I was an RPI student then and would keep track of ALB traffic flying over Troy on approach to 28.

I see WN has Gate 1 listed as their gate on their website for when they start service at SYR. I thought Gate 1 was a Common Use Gate and also that WN didn’t like to use Common Use Gates? If they did get exclusive use of Gate 1, removing it from Common Use, then where does that put F9?

That May just be a temporary thing just to put a space on their website. I wouldn’t be surprised if they turn gate 15 into WN’s home at SYR and let them decorate/color it how they want to. Similar to when JetBlue used to use that gate

Just curious as to what facilities CPB will be using. I had understood their facilities required some rather significant upgrades in order for SYR to retain its designation as an international
airport and wondered if maybe they would be getting the Gate 15 area.

At SYR I can see gate 15 being used for CPB but they'd also need a new set of stairs as there is none at that gate and many planes that use those facilities now are of the small kind like executive jets small cargo planes like Castle Aviation C208s

Both gates 12 and 14 are CPB capable, and it would be much easier to make gate 1 CPB capable than gate 15. Gate 15 is over public landside space, and the hallway would have to go through the south baggage claim area. Given that it is only used for charters (and I don't know when the last time it was used for that), I don't see the reason to add any Intl capable gates.

I wonder if B6 will increase the frequency of BUF-LAX flights. That's the only nonstop option to CA from BUF.

I expected the flights to do well, so that's definitely great to hear. Took em long enough to add it back, but better late than never!

F9 launching ROC-TPA 4X a week beginning 11/30 on the A320. Currently have them for Dec/Jan/Feb/Mar at 10 flights per week over a 7 day a week operation with service to MCO, TPA, MIA. Given their success they’ve had to far, very hopeful they’ll announce DEN next for spring/summer. With B6 going back to pre-pandemic schedule in November, DL going back to 7X daily between JFK/LGA, UA resuming the evening ORD mainline and AA resuming mainline in 2 weeks, it finally feels like ROC is getting almost completely back to pre pandemic levels, if not exceeding in certain areas.

It's interesting that Frontier is expanding so aggressively at ROC on already-served routes to Florida. TPA and MCO are likely almost entirely O & D; is WN planning to make TPA and MCO daily again? I don't know numbers, but suspect that a certain amount of AA's traffic at MIA is connecting. Maybe that route will sustain both carriers. Best scenario is that everybody does well on these routes.

I too do not understand why they want to fly to the same airports (ex MIA) that WN does. You would think they would fly to where there is no competition (like LAS or DEN) .

As of 9/29/2021, WN currently has daily ROC-MCO nonstop service starting on 3/12/2022 through end of its current schedule.

Something that is so fascinating to me is the fact that F9 is seeing so much early on success in ROC after 4 months of operation, and yet after 6 years G4 continues to remain completely stagnant. Generally speaking where one is successful, the other seems to be as well.

G4 had pulled out of MKE, even though MKE is still served by F9 and NK recently entered the MKE market.

G4 has also recently announced plans to pull out of CLE, even though both F9 and NK still serve CLE.

There are some other markets such as DFW/DAL, BDL, PNS, PHL, SMF, and SEA that are served by both F9 and NK but not G4.

I don't understand G4's stagnation at ROC, either. G4 started ROC with SFB and FLL. They subbed out FLL for PGD, and there they've stayed. I would think 2x weekly FLL would be a sure winner at ROC. I'd think 2x weekly LAS would be a winner, too. But G4 hasn't tried that route.

G4 claims that they are leaving Cleveland because of increased airport costs due to expansion. Is CLE really building anything that big?

I was watching the SYR webcams this mourning and I noticed that a Frontier A320 was parked at gate 20 on the North concourse (a gate that UA uses a RON gate) instead of the usual gate 1 on the south concourse and the airport's website said that effective 10/1/21 that Frontier's operation were moving to the North concourse. This leads me to believe that when Southwest starts service at SYR next month that they will indeed be using gate 1

Jim

G4 hasn't been flying here as of late,I believe.

Bottom line is, even leisure travelers do occasionally need or want to travel to destinations other than secondary airports in Florida, AZA or LAS. F9 has figured that out to some degree, G4 really hasn't.

Yeah, either gate 1 and/or 15

I believe Gates 12, 14 and 20 are common use gates. Supposedly, when leases are renegotiated, SYR intends to designate all gates common use.

Looks like SYR plans to expand the international ops. I wonder what the new FIS facility will look like and what international airlines would return?

I guess that could lead to some charter flights. We'll see.

Via aviationDB the most recent data (June 2021) shows load factors of 86% on ELM-SFB, surprised G4 hasn’t expanded at ELM.

Yeah I'm surprised either. I would love to see that flight go daily.

ALB has FIS facilities, and regularly clears diversions bound for NYC-area airports.

Allegiant does not fly to ROC all the time. They are not coming here til Nov 19th. IDK how they can retain employees when they don't work for weeks at a time ?

I think employees come from the other station.

I'm guessing these 2x-4x weekly flights ground ops are contracted out to other airlines. At least they were when I worked for the airlines over 10 years ago.....maybe things have changed since then.

They’re handled by AvFlight (one of the FBO’s)

Looks like AA is upgrading SYR-DFW to mainline, at least around the holidays. Anybody know if this is temporary or permanent?

1x 319 currently scheduled through 16Feb22. Does anybody know if that's when AA's updated schedule currently goes through? Nice capacity bump, but a bummer to lose 1/3 of the route's F capacity.

Yeah, G4 and F9 use grand handlers everywhere even in their "hubs".

With all those load factors I'm surprised by that. I've always been confused why they chose to fly to ELM over ITH.

Could’ve been facilities, although I’ve definitely seen 737s (which are relatively the same size as 320s) at ITH as of late.
