Great catch! Plenty of doubt when Starlux was announced and the A350 order placed. The roll out seems to be going well and the first A350 is being built.

Starlux Airlines (JX, Taipei Taoyuan) may postpone plans for its Los Angeles Int'l service until 2023 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, reports Taiwan’s Central News Agency (CNA).

Starlux spokesman Nieh Kuo-Wei said plans to start flying the route in June 2022 were first pushed back to the end of 2022, but now possibly to 2023. “With the pandemic still persisting, the launch of flights on the American route may be postponed further until 2023," he said. Starlux is authorised to operate scheduled and charter flights ferrying passengers, property, and mail between the two countries, as previously reported.

Can’t wait for them to kick off long haul. Interested in seeing the products they bring to the market

I hope this is the right place to ask, but I'd be interested in thoughts on whether have 3 mainline airlines based in Taiwan (Republic of China) is viable?

Either way, it is nice to see the airline take off (forgive the pun) when many posters on the forum were very dubious of the prospects of the airline coming into existence.

It might have been viable though I think their expansion plans were grandiose to say the least but now with Covid. All bets are off. They have terrible timing. Theyre lucky the CEO has hundreds of millions US $ of his own wealth to burn through.

Not really any different than Air Premia in Korea, no?

This is going to be very tough. South Korea with a far bigger population has struggled with two mainline carriers even with both belonging to strong alliances. Once the LCCs took off in Korea they grabbed a material market share of domestic and regional flights. It would seem the Taiwan market is more apt to add significant LCC than a third mainline carrier. We will see, and I have a lot of doubts if they can succeed. I admire their gumption but their timing is so unfortunate.

I beg to differ. KE has an 1st quarter profit...as in not a loss.

As to Taiwan, while their population is far smaller, a large portion does travel, including over 500K to USA alone!
