Awesome! But if she's going to be out of service for two months, she's going to miss part of freight Peak. Still, she'll be good to go for a while then, and it's anticipated that demand is going to remain high for many more months.

Fascinating EK would give up a 777F in this cargo market.

EK have been using their passenger 777's on a lot of cargo flights, perhaps they feel this is good enough for now. It is surprising though.

Could be something as simple as EK’s lease with DAE was coming to an end and LH was willing to pay more for it.

They may also be taking a long-term view of wanting to exit the dedicated freighter business and see this as a way to get the highest price for selling their assets.

The 2nd Amerijet 757 (N172AJ) arrived at MIA yesterday, from GYR. Hoping to see it in svc soon. Not sure what's going on with the first one, N818NH.

Also, Skybus DC-8-73 OB-2158-T is currently taxiing at MIA as Skybus 849 destined for MGA (Amerijet route).
Hooray!!! Another DC-8 in svc.

So this is 873SJ. Same plane as OB-2158-T. Interesting that they put it into service after such a long time at MIA. Makes me happy. Just wondering what's up with OB-2059-P. Hopefully just in maintenance? Getting ready for Amerijet to charter both during Peak?? Wouldn't that be cool?

Actually, this is the first one. N818NH hasn't been handed over yet.

OK I see. N873SJ was the one we already saw many pics of, on the ground at MIA (with grey engines, as opposed to chrome like OB-2059-P). Hoping to see all this action soon. I guess they will need the lift, with the A321 lease set to end in Oct I believe.

818NH was doing an engine run this morning on the AAR ramp. 172AJ is parked on northeast ramp at N4. I've been told there are no manuals and no pilots trained on the 757. Both jets are big paperweights right now.

I’d like to thank everyone who makes this such a informative and educational thread. It stays civil and there is very little debate that doesn’t advance the topic. It has become my morning and evening routine to read.

With that, I’m excited for peak tracking this year. If a new peak thread is made outside of this one I had a potential suggestion to keep it from getting locked early by the mods. That would be to pre-define the timeline in the title. ie, “Peak Cargo 2021 (1Nov-1Feb)” or something similar.

Following the issue of an AD for the 747classic and -400 aircraft, the worldwide 747 freighter fleet will have to be inspected before October 05th 2021'

AD 2021-17-06
The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for all The Boeing Company Model 747-100, -100B, -100B SUD, -200B, -200C, -200F, -300, -400, -400D, -400F, 747SR, and
747SP airplanes. This AD was prompted by reports of cracks found in the front spar shear tie and at the intercostal lug fitting at certain locations. This AD requires repetitive detailed and surface high frequency eddy current (HFEC) inspections of the front spar shear tie and intercostal lug fitting at certain locations for any cracking, and applicable on-condition actions. The FAA is issuing this AD to address the unsafe condition on these products.

The FAA reviewed Boeing Alert Requirements Bulletin 747-53A2904 RB, dated December 16, 2020. This service information specifies procedures for repetitive detailed and surface HFEC inspections of the station 1000 front spar shear tie at the left and right side buttock line (BL) 11.33, BL 33.99, BL 57.50, and BL 75.92, and of the intercostal lug fitting at the left and right side BL 11.33, for any cracking, and applicable on-condition actions. On-condition actions include repair, installing a new front spar shear tie, and installing a new intercostal lug fitting

The FAA is issuing this AD to address any cracking in these areas that could result in the loss of limit load capability in a principal structural element, the potential inability to restrain the cargo for certain cargo configurations, and the potential for a center fuel tank rupture for certain cargo configurations under limit load conditions, which could adversely affect the structural integrity of the airplane.

See : https://rgl.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guid ... -17-06.pdf

Although ADs are routinely issued, the current unavailability of repair kits and the fast-approaching effective date of October 05th could cause a lot of (planning) issues with the 747 cargo operators, except the 747-8 series.

Here's hoping that the inspections disclose few on-condition situations. Remarkable that 8 months after the Boeing Service Bulletin, repair kits aren't available.

Especially P-F converted 747 freighters could be effected, because they are operating at higher operating weights, than original designed and not all relevant structural parts are changed/ re-enforced during the P-F conversion.

Drove around Dothan today and got a few pics including n102ff with its green cargo door. They’re only phone quality but I’ll see if I can solve getting them up here.

I wonder if this development might increase interest in acquiring the two Saudia 748 factory freighters?

Although ADs are routinely issued, the current unavailability of repair kits and the fast-approaching effective date of October 05th could cause a lot of (planning) issues with the 747 cargo operators, except the 747-8 series.

Here's hoping that the inspections disclose few on-condition situations. Remarkable that 8 months after the Boeing Service Bulletin, repair kits aren't available.

I don’t know if I would get worked up about it too much. 8 months in, we could have 90% of the fleet inspected and repaired by now for all we know. Especially anything that’s gone through heavy MX recently. The fact that Cargofacts hasn’t made a stink of it is either it’s not a huge issue, or maybe we just picked it up here first for them.

Thanks for those, it's interesting to see what's hanging around the tarmac at these lesser-visited places.

On that note, our videographer at Lepp Avation channel on Youtube paid Oscoda a visit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFJjgL0I8E8

Interesting footage, 2 763s are very actively getting parted out with another Austrian example probably not long for this world.

The other thing is that October 5 effective date of the AD, not a drop dead date. You need the Service Bulletin to know what the inspection intervals are.

Great job!! Commercial Jet is busy. AEI is also holding its own in the 737 conversion space.

Looking harder at the AD, looks like the remedy in an on-condition situation is about twice as expensive as the inspection. Like 31K in labor, 38K in parts. Doesn't seem like a terribly-extensive amount of work to do the repair.

The last photo shows the jet with Ukraine International / PS livery. There were never too many of those, so identifying might be a bit easier as a result.

Curious what the iAero jet tail number is in the next to last picture. Can’t make it out, guess they’re adding another cargo 737, probably to operate on behalf of DHL. N859AM, which was recently converted at DHN for iAero, is already in operation for iAero/DHL out of CVG

If all things matched with RB757’s very detailed post above, it should be N290BR in the big hanger with the Ukraine tail.

It’s about 30 miles over to DHN, I’ll probably ride my motorcycle over there next weekend and re-scout. And I’ll take a small set of binoculars so I can read and note the tail #s.

I like the look in the hangar. Seems to show they're converting that 738 as well as an MD-80 at the same time.

I believe that Terra Avia's ER-BAC sacrificed some of its engine cowlings to assist N27063's resurrection. CGK and GMF have just been the go to facility for quite some time now with 747 resurrection and maintenance work. Good for that outfit to make a tidy profit and continue to build and expand their tribal knowledge on all things 747.

Yes indeed, it is great to see there are still a MRO company that pays attention for those aircraft from bygone era. GMF Aero is well known for providing MRO services for many forgotten aircraft type, B747 Classics, DC-10, B737 Classics. That actually explains all those parked Classics at CGK for past two decades, this might end soon as CGK authority plans to clear up those mess soon.

On a side note, Aerotranscargo B747-433BDSF ER-BBB also flew in the same day as N27063 from Nur Sultan, Kazakhstan. She just past her 30th birthday on August 30th!

As Aerotranscargo's ER-BBB taxied in to GMF, sistership ER-BAM "Roll Tide" departed GMF, having finished up it's own maintenance period. Roll Tide departed CGK for the former British held terra firm of HKG. Once it was loaded up, "Roll Tide" blasted Westbound for homeplate at NQZ.

Judging from a photo on another site, taken when she was passing through HKG, it looks like they gave her an economy-version ATC paint job: paint the logo on the fuselage and each engine in white and red, red logo on winglets, red tail with ATC logo. Rest of the white fuselage appears untouched. But, more and more, the ATC branding is being applied to its aircraft. So, as of today, ER-BAM now looks like ER-BBJ, livery-wise.

Had an enlightening presentation and briefing from one of my freight forwarder account managers about the current state of the air cargo market and the immediate future prospects.

From my notes and the general tone of the briefing, air cargo in and out of Asia-Pacific, particularly China is badly screwed over. China has a real problem of air cargo congestion at their major airports both inbound and outbound; part of this is driven by the issues at Shanghai Pudong Airport, where the authorities have effectively shut down the airport's cargo terminal due to an outbreak and infection cluster there. All ground handlers and warehouse workers of every forwarder, vendor and operator without exception is being forced to follow a 14/7/7 rule; basically employees can work 14 days in a row, quarantine at a hotel for 7 days afterwords, and then quarantine at home for another 7 days before the cycle starts again. This is causing air cargo to back up heavily at Shanghai, and is spilling over to other airports as cargo gets rerouted.

There's also a chance that cargo won't get accepted by the forwarder until literally hours before it is scheduled to depart as well due to the congestion and workforce issues for anything coming out of China.

Adding to issues is issues with ocean freight; rates for ocean freight have skyrocketed by 4-5 times normal pricing out of Asia, and availability is near zero. This has caused a lot of cargo that would be moved via ocean freight to spill over and be moved by air freight, which is compounding the congestion issues. They don't see any improvement in sight as the market is heading into peak season and an increase of consumer related product as well as strong demand in e-commerce.

Air freighter availability is an ongoing concern; the lack of passenger flights and the continued shortage of cargo aircraft is an ongoing constraint on availability. Still lots of passenger jets being used as freighters, and with the upcoming holiday season, we could see even further issues with availability due to demand increases. Lots of cargo aircraft are right now in maintenance, in anticipation of the upcoming peak season.

Sea freight is in the same predicament that air freight is at Shanghai. There have been ports shut down due to outbreaks and this is compounding the problems with not enough ships sailing. The freight is backing up on the docks, with little to no ending in sight for the problems.

We've had retailers in Australia suggest to buy Christmas gifts now, as they expect there to be shortages at the peak demand period.

interesting development on one of very few still remaining 757-200M
9N-ACB 757-2F8M Air Nepal has been sold to CSDS Aircraft Sales and Leasing for 4.9 million euros.
Would be a perfect candidate for conversion due to the already installed cargo door otherwise, national / ATI might like it, however at 33 years old it might well end up as parts, not sure what the cycles/time are but it has been stored in Kathmandu since 2018 which probably isn't all too good in terms of corrosion/wear.

The last photos that I have seen of her she was being taken apart in KTM, she wasn't fit to fly out anymore. Both she and her sister would be scrapped at KTM if not are all gone by now.

Interesting factoid: the year-old Amerijet CEO who was diversifying and expanding rapidly into ACMI, acquiring aircraft quickly, etc., has departed. The old CEO, who had become Executive Chairman, has retaken the CEO role. According to the Loadstar, it's because the old guy couldn't give up trying to run the company day-to-day from his more-removed post.

This doesn't bode well for rapid expansion and modernization.

SOOOOO...maybe our favorite DC8s will stick around for a long while!!

I saw that news yesterday and was curious what was happening. He is only "interim" CEO, but if he is having issues giving up control that "interim" term could be a while. I'm sure the outgoing CEO will take his ambition to someone who may bankroll it (hopefully).

It's leading to some very odd freight routings for us trying to get our cargo into China; we had cargo that was bound for Beijing be routed via Hong Kong and moved on the road, and we also had air cargo that was routed via Seoul, South Korea in case of a delay in Beijing so it could be kept in the fridge and have its dry ice topped off. Lots of headaches right now trying to work through all of this.

SOOOOO...maybe our favorite DC8s will stick around for a long while!!

I knew Amerijet was due some 757s but had run into issues with staffing. That wouldn't be on the desire end as I have never heard a pilot who was on the 757 say a disparaging remark or transfer due to equipment dislike!!! Wonder if the staffing issue was due to potential internal squabbles at the company prior to the "Old CEO" coming back into power. An "internal malaise", while the big dogs fight it out to make sure one is in good with the "winner". So the "new" CEO is on their way out, along with the A321P2F. With those departures, we have both DC-8Fs of Skybus put into service and await the entrance of the 757P2Fs. One has to wonder if all the ex-Delta folks who recently came on to Amerijet stay, as the "new" CEO departs?

Is anyone able to grab a photo of the two Skybus DC-8Fs on the apron at MIA?!?! It would be a heck of a Christmas present to capture 2 DC-8Fs operating at MIA during Peak 2021.

On another front, I'd love to see what a six month lease on an A321P2F runs you in comparison to a DC-8F. As I ask that question a thought occurred to me. Is this the first time the following sentence has ever been written? A321P2F to be replaced by a DC-8F.
