FAQ

SOURCE: OAG

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

NOTE: It finally updated!!! :)

We aren't seeing big time int'l cuts yet, but capacity is flowing into SJU/STT/FAI/ANC/BZN

Hm... AC going rowdy on the return to US cities including BDL, etc.... shall we plan for the border to re-open by then and flights like that coming back into cities like BDL, BWI, CMH, etc?

Wow BA really slashing capacity. Lockdown and a testing requirement on both sides will do that I guess.

The ANC/FAI adds on DL are all usual pre-COVID seasonal routes and frequencies. If the cruise industry craters again this year some of those will get pulled back.

Thanks for the great work as usual!

I'm expecting huge drop in CUN/MBJ/AUA demand for the foreseeable future. Also, with the additional cost of testing included, do you think that basically kills NK/F9 to Caribbean market until the cost of testing comes down?

So are airlines saying that Transatlantic passengers may return gradually from late March? Maybe that is the time we realistically expect the first step for transatlantic flights? Maybe by then an industry/international common approach to resume int'l travel would begin (e.g. a vaccine passport/certificate/app?)

I really hope so.

Alaska is a wonderful place to go even if not cruising. I hope to go this summer if the testing/quarantining restrictions are reasonable.

Yes, HOB is still served thru IAH and HOB-DEN is still active from June 4, its one of those routes that keeps getting pushed back.

I suspect that this is due to the switch from 'winter' to 'summer' schedules, which happens around March 27th. If demand remains lower than expected and travel restrictions stay in place, expect further long haul cuts in a couple of weeks. Most airlines have already trimmed those routes long ago and are now hoping to maintain the schedule as planned.

Surprising to see, twice daily x6, starting 2/15 their website shows, but flight times are horrible. Both flights just over two hours apart.

Which is all under the control of Canada opening their ports. Foreign registry ships are bound by the PVSA which prevents them from between US ports.

What’s not really being covered is the offered in intl destinations. Most resorts are offering a free antigen test while only charging around $150 for a PCR one.

I don't think it is. I think Alaska is the next adventure destination...and there is nowhere else to go. I do agree they will start pulling back selected frequencies and see where we end up.

Not during this timeframe last year or this year. It's getting really complicated because people are thinking 2019 as the compare timeframe, but it is 2020.

I think the airlines are playing a game of chicken with customers. If the airlines don't cancel the passengers only get credit. If the airline cancels they have to refund. They will wait until close in on the near term stuff and hope for repeal longer term.

They thought that until the new Administration comments last night. Apparently we aren't allowed to discuss that here so I cant tell you what that was.

When DL switched their DTW/SEA-PVG nonstop flights to DTW/SEA-ICN-PVG, the flights showed up as an increase on DTW/SEA-ICN. So I believe that is how it shows up, even if someone can’t buy only the first leg.

Just out of curiosity which routes are you referring to when you say "they haven't been cut as much as it states"?

Enilria could UA's March increase on our GRU-ORD be a misfiled cargo section? UA has been running ORD-GRU-ORD cargo only fights since August using a 77W, together with our passenger flights to/from IAH and EWR both 789s they are maxing these aircraft out with cargo. I don't see UA restarting passenger service on our ORD-GRU-ORD route until fall 2021 at the earliest, which has me wondering if this increase in frequency is actually a cargo section and not a passenger section.

Well this is embarrassing...

I didn’t account for the fact that EWR-ATL/RDU don’t start till the 11th. I was basing them off the fact that they are 2x daily.

Thanks for the great work as usual!

I'm expecting huge drop in CUN/MBJ/AUA demand for the foreseeable future. Also, with the additional cost of testing included, do you think that basically kills NK/F9 to Caribbean market until the cost of testing comes down?

Not so sure CUN will see that big of a drop. The hotels there have really stepped up in a big way to offer free/low cost testing onsite. Some are even offering quarantine of up to two weeks free of charge if a test comes back positive.

AA AUS-DFW FEB 6>5[11]
AA DEN-DFW FEB 7>6[12]
AA DFW-SLC FEB 4>3[7]

Still seeing those gremlins in AA's changes. These are all mainline markets, AUS-DFW actually has 7 flights with no changes, DEN-DFW stays at 7, no change, and DFW-SLC stays at 4, no changes for Feb.

I think these numbers are based on the entire month. During COVID time, there could very well be certain odd days in the month/week when an airline just cuts the schedule down big time. I'd guess these are off peak cuts or maybe cuts in the first week of Feb.

PHX-PRC is new. Its less than a two hour drive though. Last week they announced ELP-CNM, Boutique continues to amaze me.

Hopefully it actually begins unlike their PDX-EUG route.
Odd about the Prescott service is it has 2 flights a day, 3 hours apart.

Like PD, AC’s been pushing back their transborder route restarts in roughly 2 month increments. This is the latest pushback. A good chunk of the ones you didn’t refer to are winter seasonal routes. Given that those typically end in April, it’s safe to say those ones will only be resuming for winter 2021-22, by which time enough people will hopefully have been vaccinated for them to restart. It’ll be interesting to see how long the business routes will take to fully come back or if the world of Zoom, MS Teams, etc has permanently shifted a huge chunk of face-to-face biz travel to the virtual realm.

Delta's big winter pull back from western mountain towns didn't made sense. Glad they are reconsidering this summer. Still no return to ASE however.

There are southbound cruises through Southeast, but yes you are correct YVR and SEA are the standard cruise starting/ending points. Schedules are already starting to be trimmed on some cruises.

ANC is all about people visiting as they did this past summer and exploring. From people I know in the Kenai the tourist numbers were basically the same. For those I know in Juneau, it was empty and way more bears during the summer.

Id say it’s closer to 50/50 for starting point then you think. The boat goes in both directions. ;)

I did a ANC (Whittier) to YVR cruise a couple of years ago, the ship was full.

I don't think it is. I think Alaska is the next adventure destination...and there is nowhere else to go. I do agree they will start pulling back selected frequencies and see where we end up..

Thanks as always for the thread!
I had similar thoughts. I'm sure some of the seats are intended for cruise traffic but anecdotally I've been seeing AK on lists/articles as a way to go somewhere a bit out of the norm without traveling internationally....for what it's worth.

It's an a.net thing, anytime a new flight is added to Alaska, cruises are somehow always brought up as the reasoning for the additional service.

No sir.I checked the entire month. Yes there are some days where there is one less flight and some with one more however they basically even out. There are no new changes in February for this week on these routes. One DFW-AUS flights goes to Eagle (Mesa) on 2/11 but the overall frequency stays at 7 per day. Please dont "guess" without checking the airlines website.

So sad to see the SBP/SBA-SAN flights go. But not surprising as California continues to be on its seemingly never ending lockdown, which is all but killing most intra-state tourism.

In the meantime there’s always Amtrak.

It doesn't look like the SBA/SBP-SAN and SBP-PDX are gone permanently. According to the OAG data, it comes back in the summer.

I guess up until this year those posters did have a fair point because the number and size of ships sailing out of AK kept growing, and would thus need flights to keep them going, but cruises are not the only thing in AK and the comments upthread about cruises this year are just comical
Instead of typing in "mods", consider using the report function.
Love how every "travel blogger" says they will never fly AA/Ethihad again and then says it again and again on subsequent flights.

Yeah, there won’t be very many cruises departing from Fairbanks this year despite the new flights into there.

I believe MSP has had non-stops to FAI in the past. To my knowledge this is the first time there have been non-stops to FAI from DFW, ORD, and DEN though.

Not to say that it won't be flown, but slightly surprised that ATL-FCA and increased MSP/SLC-FCA on DL aren't popping up to serve Glacier National Park this summer.

I was simply proposing you to check all the dates to verify that it intact was no cut. If you did and found there were no changes, great. No need to be rude.

UA filed these as J service type, 2x weekly (WE/SU) March 7th-24th. So I see these as adds and yes, the others are filed as freighters.

You got numbers and a source? I do.

More than half of all visitors coming to Alaska arrive by cruise ship. In 2018, 1,169,000 traveled by cruise ship, 760,100 were air visitors, and 97,200 were highway/ferry visitors.

There is a lot of one-way cruise traffic.

They were selling DTW-YUL?
Is it correct that a tag flight shouldn't show up here?

When DL switched their DTW/SEA-PVG nonstop flights to DTW/SEA-ICN-PVG, the flights showed up as an increase on DTW/SEA-ICN. So I believe that is how it shows up, even if someone can’t buy only the first leg.

It shows the plane taking off and the plane landing. Additionally, RJ sells the AMM-YUL, so had to show that leg. The question is whether the YUL-DTW shows up. That leg is typically marked with a code that allows it to appear as a 1-stop to AMM, but not to YUL because they do not have traffic rights. Because they also do not publish fares on YUL-DTW it is kind of moot whether they publish the flight as "local suppress" or not since it can't sell without fares, so they are not too careful about it.

In the meantime there’s always Amtrak.

Always seemed too short to work IMHO.

I think these numbers are based on the entire month. During COVID time, there could very well be certain odd days in the month/week when an airline just cuts the schedule down big time. I'd guess these are off peak cuts or maybe cuts in the first week of Feb.

I was simply proposing you to check all the dates to verify that it intact was no cut. If you did and found there were no changes, great. No need to be rude.

Again, if anybody could diagnose this problem that would be useful. Is it a single aircraft type? A single operator? What is the constant factor?

Thanks as always for the thread!
I had similar thoughts. I'm sure some of the seats are intended for cruise traffic but anecdotally I've been seeing AK on lists/articles as a way to go somewhere a bit out of the norm without traveling internationally....for what it's worth.

It's an a.net thing, anytime a new flight is added to Alaska, cruises are somehow always brought up as the reasoning for the additional service.

That also depends if they could the roundtrip SEA cruises to Alaska as visitors. They probably do.
