With 43.768 million passengers counted in 2020, CAN passed Atlanta (ATL / KATL), which saw 42.918 million passengers.
Third place is taken by Shenzhen (SZX / ZGSX) with 37.916 million passengers.

Considering that the European and Middle Eastern hubs suffered from even larger drops in passenger numbers, it indicates that domestic travel remains much stronger than international and long haul demand. On the other hand, HND also saw huge cuts despite handling mostly Japanese domestic flights.
With the posted numbers, CAN is nearly twice as large as either LHR, CDG or IST, all of which handled around 22-23 million passengers in 2020.

I'm afraid I don't quite follow. ATL is overwhelmingly domestic, especially right now. So how does CAN passing ATL prove this point?

On number of passengers boarded yes CAN overtook ATL. But on # of flights ATL is still #1. CAN has more wide-bodies than ATL.

Guangzhou and Shenzhen are not that surprising. Those are big airports with mostly (specially SZX) domestic traffic which hasn't been hit for much of 2020 in China.

I imagine the Chinese carriers are not subject to seat blocking - a la DL - which could impact figures for CAN vs ATL.

I'm afraid this statistic is pretty much an anomaly for 2020, as it largely depends on how COVID was handled by the two countries. China was able to get COVID under control very quickly, and passenger traffic rebounded much faster, especially domestic traffic. The US continues to struggle, and domestic service into ATL is not even at 50% probably of what it was (seat blocking, less flights, the list goes on)

Yep an anomoly for 2020, and by the looks of it for parts (if not all) of 2021 too.
