FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

NOTE: I don't know whether this move to Wednesday is permanent or just some temporary problems on the schedule provider side. So, it is what it is.

WN 3 dailies from FAT/SBA-LAS. That’s... ambitious.

Thanks for posting this! I don’t know California. Why would SBA get a flight to another California destination and not FAT?

Edit: I’m referring to the new WN service.

AA at PHL in March looks very similar to Jan/Feb, not too surprising

Geography. Fresno-Oakland takes under three hours by car. Santa Barbara-Oakland is closer to five hours.

Thanks for this!

Any idea why DL uses JFK for ACK and MVY as opposed to LGA? Is Delta relying more on connections from the west coast than O/D travellers (which, presumably, would prefer LGA)?

3M is slowly rebuilding the regional Florida-Southeast network that was a core part of DH's (Independence Air) network, later duplicated by DL Connection as a competitive response. Let's see if this works in the long-term with the right frequency and fleet type.

Interesting adds to Hispaniola. B6 last flew MCO-PAP on the E190, and NK will join B6 and F9 on MCO-SDQ.

Some of the AA frequencies are still off, I would double check with AA.com. AA is adding a new late night bank out of PHX (2230) so markets like ABQ-PHX and ELP-PHX increase from 3 to 4 on Mar 4.Cant seem to narrow down whats causing it. Looks like many markets do show correctly though.

I can’t remember the last time AA flew non-stop BOS-LAX. My March trip has, just today, been routed through PHX westbound and Charlotte eastbound. Meanwhile, DL keeps their BOS-LAX flights going, and I wonder whether loyalty on that route will now shift from historically dominant AA to DL.

"DL ATL-SBN MAR 3>2[3]" Delta will still operate 3 daily ATL-SBN on Sun, Mon, Thu and Fri. They will operate 2 daily on Tue, Wed and Sat.

I don't believe it was THAT long ago, but with covid-reduced frequencies and routes, AA stepping back from LAX, and relying on B6 for more JFK/BOS flying, this is what you get.

Looks like most days of the week are actually flat to LY...6 and 5 flights respectively. Some specific days are lower though, which seem to be pulling the average down. Solid schedules for both areas again now and LIT even gets back 2 mainline flights in MAR.

OTOH, 1 RT on an extremely short route is generally considered to be ill-advised, so be careful what you wish for.

I see news that airlines think traffic is coming back faster than thought, BUT TSA data looks pretty poor and the new intl restrictions are another kick in the teeth. I don't see how demand can be coming back much.

There's only one logical answer. California connects. I have to assume there are a lot of Cali people with properties out there.

I think the logic must be that the new travel restrictions are more likely to hurt leisure rather than ethnic.

I'm going to say what I've been saying. It is not something I can fix. If you can find a common thread like the same equipment type is always missing or the same operator (OO for example) is always impacted I can get it reported it to the provider. Absent that I don't have enough information to do anything about it. Nobody has identified a common thread. Also, many of the times I have checked as a reader's request I have not found the error on the airline website, it was instead just confusion about day of week operation. So until somebody can tell me something like "AA/OO flights on E135s are mostly missing but only for March" I can't go any further with it. Just saying "AA is wrong" or "this route is wrong" doesn't find a pattern that can be addressed. They won't fix it "whac-a-mole" style. It needs to be an identified pattern.

I think it's a combination of local traffic, chasing leisure demand, and using these to fill empty connecting seats at LAS that were probably full in the past.

Keep in mind that B6 runs the most number of flights here an they are going to be coordinating schedule with AA going forward.

Looks like SJC and PSP are taking it on the chin this week. How is SJC doing overall in The Recovery?

AS seems to be handling March a bit more piecemeal than they did February; this is the second week in a row that they've made some cuts for March. Reminder: their March sked doesn't kick in until the 18th so we're just within 2 months now. (That's why so many fractional counts.) I expect the big March "adjustment" for AS will occur sometime around mid-February but maybe much of it will be done before then....

PSP surprises me as it certainly is mostly leisure and I would expect, especially considering Spring Break is in March this year, that it would be a good market. And, AS just can't seem to make PSP-SJC work permanently; seems to me it's been gone and back several times in the past years...

F9 seems to be doing well. More additions to various routes and not many suspension. How are they doing in general?

Also, AA JFK-LAS still is not back :(

Can't speak to SBA, but FAT can and will support it (partially at the expense of Allegiant). LAS is a major connecting point, and the potential O&D has not been realized on that route. I foresee O&D to LAS doubling once demand picks back up.

Edit: Typos...sorry!

I should have clarified. I meant to say that F9 seems to be doing better than anticipated on certain routes. Probably from the increased demand to FL and Vegas.

Of course no airline is doing well, but from a micro point of view there are some glimpses of hope.

I wouldnt confuse dart boarding new routes with success thought. F9 has a history of adding new routes with much fanfare, while quietly closing an equal number.

AS (apparently) has picked up SAN-JFK which in all likelihood AA has also dropped for good. And of course AA's other "partner", JetBlue, also serves the market. IMO, AA will not be missed.

Blue also serves JFK-LAS so that may take care of that route's coverage for AA by one of their partners. Remember that AS inherited LAS-JFK from Virgin but after a while dropped it. Will AS re-enter that market now that AA is out of it? I doubt it.

I guess they're pretty confident in the success of partnering with AA. Still seems like way too much capacity though. It looks like the new flight will operate 3x weekly (Tue, Wed, Sat), making DFW-DOH 10x weekly total flights.

To be honest, Qatar increasing DOH-DFW seems more like a retaliatory response against Emirates.

On January 11, Emirates announced it would resume DXB-DFW with 3x weekly flights from March 2. Ten days later, Qatar announced it would increase DFW with 3 additional weekly flights conveniently also starting March 2.

I'd expect that WN will stimulate traffic on FAT-LAS and will add a good amount of connecting traffic. I find it interesting that the first weekend after WN arrives is now being priced well above the promotion fare of $39. There's $59 and $89 showing today. As we've seen many times in the past when LAS flights are added, they fill up quick with the party all weekend crowd.

A lot of excitement it would seem over the new flights. The question, like many new and shiny things in Fresno is, will it last? How many new restaurants have opened with long lines for the first couple of months, only to close a year or two later for lack of business? Obviously airlines are not the same as restaurants, but I am definitely adding "cautiously" to "optimistic" when it comes to my expectations about Southwest at FAT. IMO, Southwest is hoping all these new markets work out, but probably expects at least a couple to not.

The new Biden administration is now telling people 'stay home', which is drastically different messaging than a couple of weeks ago. Almost certainly having an impact on cancellations. That and a ridiculous amount of capacity was being thrown at PSP, even in good times. Everyone had the same target on their dart board.

We are supposed to discuss this somewhere else on a.net, and I'm no sure where that is, but FYI that this just happened. Please discuss wherever that place on a.net is.

My opinion prior to this week was that F9 was gutting their schedule more than almost anybody, and now it looks like they have relaxed that, but I haven't looked at their overall ASMs.

DL has taken the lead by a wide margin from a departures standpoint post-Covid, however, due to DL's blocked middle seats policy, the gap with actual capacity is likely smaller.

In the this thread and in AA's schedule modification this weekend, I saw that AA added back LAX-AUS for march. What this tells me is that they are not planning to completely throw out LAX as a hub. Why did they pick AUS over other non hub routes (like BNA or MCO)?

O&D is plentiful on AUS-California. There are tons of Californian's here, the tech sector is huge and continuing to grow in AUS - most of those jobs and industries have ties to California.

Any idea why DL uses JFK for ACK and MVY as opposed to LGA? Is Delta relying more on connections from the west coast than O/D travellers (which, presumably, would prefer LGA)?

Because of B6 using JFK, most of the traffic from those islands flows to JFK rather than LGA. Surprising but true

I agree. AA flew SAN-JFK for 60 years, uninterrupted, until now. I'm sure it was one of SAN's first nonstop transcons, if not THE first. I'm very sorry to see it gone, along with AA's hub in NYC...

AA Starts MLB-DFW Saturday Flights in a few weeks & goes up to 4 flights a day from MLB-CLT in March. I think the Additional, CLT flight is just for March.

DL stopping EWR-RDU? I still see it's bookable on the website in April.

That’s just for March.

The route has not been flown since early on when Covid hit. This is just as extension of the many existing Covid schedule cuts with the big DL March schedule update this past weekend. More than likely, it will get cut again for April when they load the April schedule next month unless things improve dramatically. This routine has been going on for quite some time now so everyone should be familiar with it. There's probably a decent chance it will return at some point since it has not be cut through the end-of-schedule. RDU-AUS/CLE/CMH/PIT were cut all the way through the end-of-schedule last month (you won't find them no matter how far you look out). So it's safe to say the odds of those routes actually returning any time soon are quite a bit lower -- viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1455253

SQ FRA-JFK APR 1.0>0[1.0]
SQ JFK-SIN APR 0>1.0[0]
SQ SFO-SIN APR 1.4>2[2]

Why are SQ going double daily on SIN-SFO? If they are that means UA will not be rushing to re add SIN service.
